Sycho, how long do you usually stay at the arcade on fridays? Im thinking of making it a regular habit of comming to UBC after school on fridays… (school ends around 330, i would be there at around 5…). Its good practice for GGXX, + i need to get used to joysticks.

Ill even try to talk the cutie at the money counter into changing the price of GGXX to 50 cents :lol:

That’s not a bad idea, people’re still playing CvS2 till then so if you get tired of GGXX you can switch over to that for awhile. Anyway yeah, sounds like a good idea. :slight_smile:

Tao, at least the five of us are actually serious players. I’d rather play people who are as good as/better than me than people who are far worse… wins mean nothing, it’s all about playing at a higher level and improving.

…or would you rather have it like 3s at JZ’s, where lots of people play, but most of them are shoto (or in GG’s case, Sol) scrubs? No offence to the guys at JZ’s, but from what I’ve seen there that’s how it is… I’d rather play the CPU than that kind of comp.

Lol Hey! I have a pretty mean competitive sol… not all “scrubs” can do 3 loops, and kick ass traps like i do! ill show you guys whats up next time i come there… it may take me like 2 months to master the joystick, but when i do, WATCH OUT! =D

In games im usually a one team/one character wonder, so i hope it doesnt piss off the UBC guys when i constantly pick Sol… my theory is “getting hella good with one character is easier than with 3 or 4…”

I wish i could make it on tuesday for the 3 hours free play shit, but i probably wont… =[

Looks like I just missed out at JZ’s. I was there at 3-4. I was the guy playing 3S with SA3 Ryu. I like the sticks more there than at Rush. I can actually do stuff instead of missing a lot of my moves like at Rush. And not everyone uses Ken there too, much to my surprise. As you can see, I’ve been hanging out at rush too much. Anyhow, I only stayed there for a little while since I was in a little hurry to get home. The CvS2 crowd is getting large. Saw some guy who could actually do A-Sak combo. The first time I saw that, though I assume most of the JZ regulars can do that.

Nah, what I meant by ‘scrubs’ was people who pick characters that are easy to use and can do pretty good damage with basic attacks. In GGXX, that would be Sol, in 3s Ken, in CvS2 Sagat… you get it. These people don’t ever actually think when they play, they just 6HS -> Bandit bringer or something dumb like S, S, HS with Sol all day (stuff like mp, fp XX hadouken w/Ken, c.FIERCE w/Sagat).

Sol is generally booed at UBC, but don’t let that stop you from using him. And you should at least learn 2 chars well so if your first fails then you can always fall back on your second. For me it’d be Baiken first, Testament second, you might use Slayer or Johnny (but prob not Johnny in #R -you saw what happened on Friday to him) as your second, I dunno.

Too bad you can’t make it on Tuesday… it’s a pretty good deal for GGXX. =/

and trust me here, KEN, is in the top tier ranking at third strike. CHUNLI is the real scrubby character who can just sit there and win. BUT, in order to do anything with her, you gotta be good. this isn’t marvel where you can just sit there, third strike and cvs2 require lots of skill to abuse the top tiers. if anything, sol is NOT scrubby. i’m using him right now and he has absolutely nothing of real abusive power. ken is also weak. both are really weak and just cuz they’re good doesn’t make them scrubby. picking a top tier team doesn’t make you scrubby. not knowing to bread and butter when you can does. the are NO scrubs at johnny zees to my knowledge. they all know ken’s abilities and you must be either retarded or watching non regulars. in terms of skill played and the game’s max potential, JZ third strike > ubc cvs2 > BC’s marvel. but it’s still retarded how we have a world class third strike and marvel player regularly at JZ isn’t it?

Hey Silverfang, your N groove was doing pretty well from what I saw.

Top tiers are part of the game. We did start off lower tier but just like everywhere else, someone’s going to start a precedent and the tiers go up. It’s life. The lower tier characters usually have strategies that can beat Blanka and Sagat anyways, it just takes some losing first but eventually you play really safe and know when to take the chances and you’llusually do well because the other guy is used to the top tier fights.

If you use low tier character and don’t want to use Blanka etc… that’s awesome and you’ll gain respect IF you master your characters. Besides, Rugal and Yamazaki are GOOD characters that are close to top anyways. Tao doesn’t just pick who I say is the #1 character, he doesn’t use A Sak or A Blanka and they’re super top tier. His Bison is pretty exploitative of his potential but he STILL doesn’t rollcancel the torpedo/scissor/hands and still doesn’t combo into custom from midscreen scissors. When he does he’ll be even better so we gotta practice our guys too. Tao’s A-Cammy is insanely good now.

So practice roll cancelling and make your lower tier guys GOOD.

I like 3s more than CVS2 that’s why I was having some games on it. Anytime I have a chance to play Alvin I’m going to take it.

Anyway, there’s actually like 10 regulars who play GGXX here, it’s not that small.

I am learning 3s right now, but the damage setting on 3s here is maxed out (unless I want to use Japanese sticks… which I don’t) so I don’t play that too often.

Yes Tao, you are a faster learner than I am. So it took you only 2 weeks whereas it took me 2 months (but I do have at least 3 chars I can use really well now, you just have 1).

Sol is considered to be scrubby because most of the scrubs use him. Note that scrubby doesn’t mean good, just that they’re used by beginners because their low-level stuff is very good compared to everyone elses. Not to say that Sol isn’t good, cause he is… he’s got a damaging K,S,H,214S ground combo, insane priority on S, 2S, and J.HS, command grab = free 50% damage, very late tech ablity for j.D, 6P. And also like 50 ways to go into dust loop: command grab, bandit bringer, RC grand viper -> command grab, RC bandit bringer -> Command grab, 214K near corner, 2HS off ground combo, counter hit 2HS, FRC Gunflame, RC super, RC 623HS, Jump Install Bandit Revolver RC…

About the 3s challenge, it doesn’t make sense for GG because you really have to take a lot more time to learn each char in GG compared to 3s. In 3s you can win by just by being insanely good at parrying. You can just parry -> counter or parry -> combo -> super with most characters for most of your damage, but in GG there’s nothing universal like that. You need to know each person’s loops, traps, setups. And then there’s the whole FRC timing that you have to get down that’s different for each move for each character. There’s a lot more memorization that goes into learning each separate char in GG, which is why it’s ridiculous to even try to learn more than a few.

Ah fuck… whatever man. I’ll give CvS2 a shot this week and see how it goes. I was never good at that game, so it’ll prob take me at least a month to get up to the level of everyone else here…
