$60 dollar games might be done for

Considering how much more games cost to make now than before, I doubt it. Plus, people are so fucking cheap. Any decent fighting game is worth more than $100. Admittedly, you dont know if it is your sort of fighter until after you buy it, but still.

Used games dont get developers any money.

One difference between piracy and used games is this: With piracy, the numbers of who gets games through such means is inflated by the lack of price. Just like how a lot of people who would have never bought a certain game for $50 will buy that same game for $10, a bunch will grab that game for free. Estimates of the damage of piracy on the industry are very loose, because they dont take into account this relationship of price to demand. (like saying Oh no! I put my game on sale for $10, and 2 million people bought it! I could have had $80 million dollars if I just left it at $50! Darn it!)

Similarly, there is a difference between maximum “possible” damage for used games and how much damage they actually do, but I think that used games are a bit more serious. Dude is offered a $40 new game or the same game used for $35. He buys the latter. Hey, it is cheaper! But the difference is that the former gives the developers some money, while the latter gives the developers NONE of the money. If the developers got money for resale, or used games “didnt exist”, this would not be a problem, but instead you have companies like gamestop getting money that would normally go to developers, aka developers simply not seeing a lot of the money that goes for paid copies of their game.

also, the escapist is a terrible site with articles that are hilariously full of shit. not giving them ad revenue.

Now, is it “killing” the industry? Probably not. But it is a legitimate concern.

the future will be “build your own game”.

you get a free or very cheap basic version for 5-20 bucks that has a few levels / no extra game content and simply buy the rest you like. e.g more attacks, story, characters etc.

What exactly -do- used games do for “us” ? I’ve never gotten any major benefit from used games… If a game is new enough to be in stores, I can usually just get it there and I have no problem paying regular price for games that aren’t on sell, if I want a game used I can usually find it cheaper on Amazon or Ebay than walking into a store and getting a measly 10 dollars off the launch price…

Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is 35.99 at Gamestop used, I can get it for 26 bucks off of Amazon or Ebay – and a few of them offer free shipping as well.

What if companies started buying and selling used copies of their own game? Is that out of the question. “Here I sell you, your game back to you. I didn’t like it that much or wasn’t what i thought i was getting”. They (the company in question) get to do exactly what gamestop does and make money off it. Maybe put a stupid netflix type of envelope with New game. Then you could send it back and get money for it. They sell it “used” and make money. It’s not the best idea but it would put more money in their pocket than complaining does.

I’d fucking pay $200 for a version of 3S that was arcade perfect and had really good online.

3rd Strike

The trouble is that takes time and money to get started (need to hire people to manage it, hire office space, buy computers ect.), whilst stamping their feet and declaring their product as some kind of special existance which shouldn’t be borrowed, sold second hand, given to charity shops, ect. doesn’t cost much and doesn’t take much effort.

IDK about you guys, but I buy my games off online auction sites like Ebay. Cheap as shit.

About game developers not getting any money about used games, maybe some game store oughta start some kind of campaign so that for every used game sold, the developers get like 5% of the price. I’m all about supporting the developers of a game if the game is good, but not for a price some shitty game stores like GameStop ask (lol new PS3 games 70€)

you clearly missed my point completely…Personally, me and people I know greatly benefit from used games, hell there was a time where i didn’t need to buy games because i had so much store credit i could essenually rent new games and play them for 7 days and return them for the full refund and do this again, and again until i found a game worth spending my store credit on. Just because “you” don’t take advantage of this, doesn’t mean people don’t buy used games or their isn’t a market for it.

Sure their always going to be better deals(the site i linked a few post ago shows that much) but it still doesn’t change the fact that used games offer more then just buying new for a discounted price, you still bought it new. If you don’t like it, your not getting all your money back, with a used game, you will. I’d take my chances with a used game any day then with a new game unless I know im going to like it(which is why i usually buy CE of games now and days), at the end of the day Im not Losing anything with buying a used because I have more options then buying the game new.

Gamestop is fucking awesome…the only place i know everytime i buy a game i get points to do whatever with…like the other day I bought two games instead of 1 because i had a shit ton(40K reward points) and i ended up buying another game with my leftover points…and it’s funny because all those points calculated from me trying multiple games on 1 $50(the list of games bigger then what you think) gift card…lolz I feel bad for people not taking advantage of this. but whatever, you wana shit on used game, whatever do what you want with your money, I can’t tell you how to spend it.

What the fuck… I knew Europe had it rough, but $92??? WHAT??? I thought $60 was ridiculous. smh

Just because you’re in love with Gamestop doesn’t make it the greatest thing… I get points from buying things on Ebay as well, and those points can be used on ANYTHING on their site, not just games… Same goes for buying things from Best Buy, and I believe Amazon has a rewards system as well, though i’m not sure whether or not it was tied to Borders book store (which I got tons of free DVDs and books from, just because I read so much).

I’m not “shitting” on used games, but the fact of the matter is the used game industry -is- pretty much leeching off of an industry that actually produces things. The only reason Gamestop can offer so much free and bonus stuff is because of how much money they make off of doing pretty much nothing. That’s not “shitting” on them, that’s a matter of fact – It’s the basis of how Pawn Shops work as well, the resell of products you get at a massive discount is a pretty easy business compared to a lot of other things.

sigh I didn’t say you didn’t get rewarded from Place A or B, the thing your not seeing is im not risking anything when buying a used game. I like gamestop because I don’t risk anything from buying their used products.

I’m not going to change your opinion on this so im just going to drop it because in the end your going to do what you do, and i’ll keep doing what im doing…even if you think it’s leaching from big corporations…as if they don’t make enough money. Keep that in mind every time you see a online pass or any sort of disk locked content that required a new purchase to be unlock, look who is doing to you and why they are doing it.

Gimme SF5 in a few years. ST and 3S held it down for quite a while.

I wanna see AE hang around for a few more years too.

You act like everyone in those corporations are swimming in huge amounts of money and are being greedy when they’re not. Those people are just like us and work their asses off making games. The used market is what it is but it wouldn’t hurt to kick back a bit of money to the companies that made the games. It does suck knowing that if i beat Mass Effect 3 in one day, that 60 dollar purchase turns into 30 buck store credit and then turns around and gets sold at close to 60 bucks again.

Make more games people wanna buy and keep.

:coffee:

nahhh what the fuck do I know?

Issue is, though, you still see tons of used copies of blockbusters on Gamestop walls days after release as well. Sure you can overcome the losses, doesn’t mean there aren’t losses still.

Also… very hard to type with a bandaid on your finger…

There’s always gonna be losses, cuz Flea Markets and Garage Sales exist.

One day, the publishers and devs will look up and shout “Y U NO KEEP GAME?” And I’ll look down and whisper, “Y u no make keepers?”

Agreed, I just understand where they are coming from when they say 2nd hand shops causing problems. They’ll always be second hand stores and places for people to sell their own stuff, but gaming is the only industry i can think of (besides cars) that encourages and provokes you to buy second hand. Gamestop puts some serious moves to try and make you buy used – often grabbing used copies even if you want something new. I’ve had some guys ask me 3-4 times if I’m sure I wanted something new over their used copy.

Corporations =/= developers >_>’ all the time. Capcom is a huge company, I could care less if they lose a few thousand dollars on used game sales, however. I care about the development team within the company, people I actually respect. There are some who are their own team or studio like Studio Dimps(SFIV, SFxTK) who I would gladly support and I do. Even if I didn’t buy the game new, I can still support them by buying the DLC and that is something I think we all can agree on. What’s the difference now if I buy a used game, what is it to them? I mean I gotta pay $10 fucking dollars to play online with it if i got it used LOL! I guess i should have bought it new right? this is the kind of shit im talking about…

Some corporations are swimming in money, Look at EA, Ubisoft, SquareEnix, Sony, and Nintendo for crying out loud, they are making a killing off us and you think im suppose to give a shit if they lose alittle money? they want you to send $60 bucks for a game, then KEEP IT, even if the game is shit and personally that doesn’t sit well with me. Then they cut out parts of the game and sell it as day 1 DLC, and this is seemly becoming the norm and no one is saying shit about it.

yes we all got mad a SFxTK on disk DLC but no one say shit about Mass Effects on disk DLC or Final Fantasy’s or “insert game that has came out in the last 6 months beside skyrim and other selected titles” give me a fucking break. I’d say if you got a shit game you should be able to trade it in for store credit then use the credit to get something you actually want. by defending companies like the way you are…your giving up your right to do so.

I could understand if you were talking about smaller companies or development teams like indie ones or whatnot, but you never brought them up. Fuck yeah I’ll Support Mike Z, thats why i bought SkullGirls and I don’t regret it because it’s gold(imo), Im talking about the greedy money hungry corporations, not your SEGA, or soon to be dead THQ(because they fucked up!) companies. sigh

Ben you always knows whats up.

If people can keep their copies of MGS3 or KH2 and play them multiple times and still keep them then it shows you something. The quality of games have diminished, either that or our values on games themselves changed.

Has there been games this console generation you still go back to from time to time and why?
