I thought this was going to be about the ingame story and was really pumped.
3S has probably the best story in the SF universe (that is if you ignore NG and 2I) it may not run as deep as say Garou: MOTW (best fighting game story IMHO) but it felt epic and it helped that the characters were genuinely interesting and unique. Gill is by far the best end boss in an SF game and easily top 5 in fighting games in general.
This game brings back awesome memories for me at AI between fall 2006-spring 2007!!!
yeah this is why i didn’t want to make a thread but figured i’d give it a shot anyway.
not sure why i used “lore” but i couldn’t think of another word.
bummer waking up to this having 4 replies and having them turn out to be nothing tho.
Call it popular moments in American 3s
All I got from Garou’s story was
- Gato is my favorite FG Jerk.
- Rock is literally at Jin levels of Emo.
- Tizoc might be insane, his story never makes mention of the fact that he entered a tournament and then killed someone by letting their home collapse on top of them. Maybe he was so distraught after being beaten by that Wrestler that he imagined himself going back to greatness, a time fictional universe in his head where he is a stronger fighter with many fans. But that mental world has trapped him inside of it, he is a prisoner inside of his own mind.
Why is every fighting game story a sordid cliche?
Because Fighting Games are supposed to have easily relatable characters and many of them draw from already heavily cliche genres such as Kung fu movies, action movies and comic books.
SF2 started the trend with THE most cliche characters ever. It helped solidify certain archetypes in North American popular consciousness. The Ryu archetype now transcends fighting games. People who never played a videogame recognize the hadoken pose even.
Pop culture caters to the lowest common denominator in service of mass appeal. This is one reason why 3rd Strike was less popular. All those weird (somewhat original) characters I hear so many knuckle heads complain about.
I liked this thread idea. its fun to reminisce about the good ol days.
For me the most fun time I’ve had with 3s was in 2009, the apex of that year being the trip to Tougeki. So many of us mobbed over there, including Ryan, yuuki, MAGUS1234, Haunts, Ironfist, Mr Bean, and some other noobs. This place ran weekly free play events with random team tournaments. I got to team with Ochibi and YSB on separate occasions.
The vid is a tour of the now closed down Shibuya Sportsland, which was across the street from the recently closed Shibuya Kaikan. Expert camera work by ryan. There’s lots more from this trip too if you’re interested, including an interview with Rikimaru that I think ended up on niconico too!
god damn i want to go to japan so bad.
thanks for posting that.
np! heres said Rikimaru interview, with me, Mr Bean, and yuuki
Looking back, we couldn’t have chosen a better player to interview
Rikimaru-sama is so sick!
I’ve watched that interview a couple times, too good!
his reaction to SF4 always makes me smile
There’s a decent amount of stuff out there, just not all in one spot so it’s a hassle.
Here’s a few videos.
If you go to http://www.spolan.com/ssl-3/event/evelog.htm
You’ll find some super old pictures of japanese 3s players. You’ll have to dig through the site and find the 3rd strike tourney results.
you can also search player names (sometimes with 3rd or スト3 next to it) and get some results too. like pictures of them holding sbo qualifier certificates.
thank you very much, exactly what i was looking for.
Pic from one of the last great socal 3s tournaments, Sunroute Cup. Had a great attendance from all across the US. You can see MOV, 5 Star, Pyrolee, Ken I, Ryan, Yuuki, Mr Bean, PAUL FUCKIN KIM, Duralath, Kazzy, Ricky O, Rom, Gootecks, EricxChin, MattxChin, Neiman, Nica KO, ThyAllMighty, and if I’m not mistaken, Victoly standing next to me. Pretty much everybody from the states who loved 3s at the time was there. I think we had NY, NC, Illinois, Oregon, Norcal, and I think even some dude from Australia!
I wish these were recovered, but we had these great big brackets from the tournament signed by all the top 8 placers hung up in Denjin Arcade, but I’m pretty sure they were thrown away when it closed. I know I have some of the old ranbat paper brackets sitting in my room somewhere at least.
Another favorite photo of mine that was featured on the Tougeki website. I’m looking particularly homo at the SBO 2009 3s Last Chance Qual sign ups with my teammates EricxChin and Carlos. The cowboy guy is Ibuki player Blue.
“i’m looking particularly homo” hahahaha
those pictures are great though. i enjoy the story for each one as well, thanks for taking your time to type it all out.
@pherai I think that’s abom on the right side of you?
@hexsells you should change back the opening title and original post. maybe 3rd scene history and media?
I know your original post was 3rd strike lore. I think a fitting topic when talking about 3s lore is the forever going chun yun match up. feel free to correct me if I’m wrong or add more to this.
early on in the games life, chun was already considered the strongest character. however later on as yun became more explored and doing well in tournaments, people started thinking yun was the best character in the game. It was widely agreed that yun also had an advantageous matchup against chun. I’ve heard tokura and ko discuss this some on a live stream and apparently at one point in time, chun wasn’t THE character to have on your team, it was yun. As time passed, chun became considered the better character since she has better match ups vs the cast. However till this day the chun vs yun match up is still debatable.
