I’ve given the online situation some thought lately, and thought I’d make a quick post about it.
I think a goal of the online community should be to improve the conditions 3s on PC play is played in. In the long term online play with 360 or PS3 doesn’t seem viable - servers will eventually shut down, people will stop playing the consoles altogether as next gen consoles take center stage, etc. it is definitely noticeable that 3s on Fightcade is growing, and consistently is the third most played game on Fightcade, only behind KOF 98 and 2002. So in terms of longevity PC seems like where we should invest our energy.
For this reason I think we should push for Fightcade to switch from FBA to ShmupMAME or an equivalent. if it’s just a question of getting the developer to do it, we should have those conversations. if it’s a question of manpower, we should ask who can help. if it’s a question of resources, I think we could pool some money together. I’d easily drop like $200 or whatever (within reason) if it went towards moving Fightcade to a better emulator. I’d also like to see energy invested in bringing low latency audio drivers into the picture. if I have to set an additional 4f of audio lag to make the audio work correctly then it’s definitely a problem. solutions like ASIO drivers already exist, it’s just a matter of getting them to work for us.
I think it’s definitely worthwhile to continue investigating lag and game speed differences as well. If we can isolate every individual aspect of lag added then we can make better recommendations to users on how they should be set up. I think this is more helpful than vague answers such as “maybe your computer isn’t good enough” or “well maybe your setup is weird but it works fine for me.” for instance, how much lag is added to Windows 7 or 8 vs XP? can we accurately reproduce exact arcade speed (slowdown and all) in GroovyMAME? we don’t have really good answers to these questions at the moment.
I’d love to see a robust training mode that works with ShmupMAME. you could theoretically do everything you can do in OE, plus so much more such as input display, displaying parry windows, etc. many tools like this already exist but they work for different programs, or work for laggy programs only. I don’t think it’s particularly useful to have training mode tools in an environment where you’re playing underwater. but we could definitely fix that problem.
I don’t have the technical knowledge to do any of these things, but I suspect there are people either in the 3s community or the general FG community who do. there’s also some overlapping interest here I think - moving Fightcade to ShmupMAME would not just help 3s players, it would help basically anyone who wants their game to be closer to arcade timing.
I love arcade 3s and offline play but also recognize the necessity of online play in places outside Japan. For this reason I support whatever we can do to improve the experience and make it as close to arcade as we can.
on a related note:
I also support a trend I’m seeing lately of more offline events being attended by dedicated players. I want to see either an arcade setup or a supergun setup in every local 3s community in the west. I think that’s a good goal to shoot for. The Darksoft battery-less mod makes this easier than ever. offline 3s on CPS3 is the ideal platform for the game, and between events like Gutter Trash, Fight Club, Arcade UFO tournies, Boiler Room, Hooters Cup, Rusty Parry, Summer Jam, I’m definitely impressed with the resurgence of offline 3s in the west. I hope this trend continues and we see more players going out to 3s arcade events, and broadcasting what they’re doing locally to everyone else. these can only be positive things.
I think offline 3s events have to come from 3s players. I haven’t been impressed with the track record of many majors who host 3s as a side tourney on laggy monitors and as an afterthought. we can do it better, and we should take it upon ourselves to do it.

I agree with Bob in regards to Shmupmame but I wouldn’t expect to see Fightcade start using it until maybe a year or two from now. I’d be really curious if that finally makes the feel like offline in an online environment.
The only person who’s ever accused me of using “online tricks” is you. Before you say oh you only play scrubs they wouldn’t know any better, I’ve played the supposed few players you “respect” and none of them have told me I play like that either. I always find it funny you hate online so much yet you keep playing on there because you supposedly have no scene blah blah blah.
