3rd Strike General Discussion Thread

Yooo o-O
That Friday Night Fisticuffs 3S video ^ has 87000 views?!
That’s a lot. Didn’t know those guys are huge.

can anyone tell me anything about the old Toronto scene? player names, characters, stories, whatever you know. I know Toronto was considered one of the good scenes (along with LA, NYC, and Austin I think?) back in the day but I don’t know much else. I know abut C Royd and AneurysmX from back then, and Funland and Mintchip now. who else?

Well I can tell you what I know lance. First of all back in late 90’s early 2000s just like in Usa arcades were everywhere universities pizza places etc. I would say a good 15 places in the Gta. The places that were notable were Funland, Orbit in the pacific mall, Scarboro town centre, York university, and lovegetty. I’m not as familiar with the west side of Toronto sorry. As far as players names like Adam B, Samir, Ibuki Chris, Ack, Burton, Quy, Js. master, Darkdragon, Nagatalock, I’d say a good 25 killers. You tube tosf or gtasf with some of those names and you can find some footage of early tournaments and such, also phychorarity is a youtube channel that will have old footage.

Seemed like Lovegetty was the arcade where a lot of the best players would gather. Out of the way but always had Japanese cabinets even when American was standard. Out of the way meant less randoms and higher overall skill level. A more core group of dedicated players.

From playing a lot at Funland Arcade I have a soft spot for American Showcase cabinets. FA had a mix of players from various cliques since it was right downtown. Many funny characters. The talented Samir basically grew up in that place. His existence was often the only defense against apparently snobby Getty players talkn shit. Used to be particularly busy for 3rd Strike there. Towards the end of its life there was just a small group of 3s players plus a rotating group of DDR players and occasional random dudes who played Turtles in Time or The Simpsons game with their girlfriends.

Supposedly there was a legendary house where some of those guys Mintchip mentioned used to chill, burn, play and learn. They had a h2h cab and strong talent with a gracious host. We’ve heard Quy speak about this a few times. Sounds like fond memories.

There used to be some Chi Rithy dude that was a decent chun. He won one time I think in a surprise showing and never came back, though, so it could be that it was just a fluke.

Chi Rithy is a really good Chun and very nice guy i give him 10/10 human points

He played in TFC’s 3s tournament last year. I think he got 2nd.

At T6 or T8 or something Chi Rithy did an exhibition (maybe MM) match vs Justin Wong. Very exciting to watch in spite of being packed into this sweaty hallway with nerds dripping on each other everywhere. I recall him doing well against Justin, which surprised me at the time, but not getting the overall win. Chun mirrors were far more boring to me back then.

Does Gaijinblaze still post? I think he’d have some input.

where is episode 2??

It’s really weird, but even though that was one of the first sketches we did, its still one of my favorites. Long Beach House ep 2 is an oft discussed topic between me and bean. maybe we’ll start a kickstarter campaign, i think that one cost us about 30 bucks to make and that was mostly invested in beer and cigarettes

also fun fact, a few of beans friends who hadn’t met me actually thought i was 36

That would make you 40 now.

let the rain fall down and wake my dreams let it wash away
my sanity

Just set up a donation thread here. I’ll kick in for more of that.

stop smoking pherai.
the world needs you :<

thats super cool of you and funland but I was kidding about funding, its actually just that me and bean both started working on solo music projects, which ill probably end up posting here whether people like it or not! I do hope we make new sketches someday though.

id probably start looking more my age if I did quit :wonder:

So 3rd Strike (alongside Zero 3, Hyper SFII and VSav) is going on Taito’s NESiCAxLive.

oh,wow . that’s kind of a big deal ?
the card system (ringnames + online ranking + custom ranks etc) was the only good thing about sf4
it was borrowed from virtua,ya - but was still really cool

no idea how (and if) they can implement that without ruining the aesthetic perfection of 3.3 (and zero / IIX)
i don’t think they can, look at the mess that is OE

also,hd screens / widescreen mode and all that…no . just no
even if the game will still be 4:3 and the extra space will be filled with bullcrap
game is meant to be played and displayed on good old cathodic ray tubes
and, yes,i know there was a widescreen option in second impact but it’s irrelevant é_é

lastly, game center run by ordinary folks (like versus) can (sorta) survive because versus cab+cps III is hella cheap compared to the financial bloodbath that is a single of those modern huge ass dedicated cab or a “regular” hd setup with the newest tekken or whatever
we are talking hundreds of dollars vs thousand of dollars

that’s why they only charge you 50円 per play
on nexica,it’s deffo going to be 100円 ?

i don’t know, let’s wait and see but i think the cons definitely outweigh the pros
good thing is : i am sure the next coopcup or yabanpaku etc will still and always use the traditional setup we all know and love

And most important problem, those new cabinets are ugly.

Guess it’s good for the far future though, if you want to keep arcades going.

No crt no bueno

*Longtime Capcom artist Daigo Ikeno has been responsible for some of the most iconic fighting game art to date during his time working on Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Street Fighter Alpha, and Darkstalkers, and he’s also served as Street Fighter IV’s art director since its inception. In addition to fighters, Ikeno has contributed to other Capcom titles such as Onimusha: Warlords, Devil May Cry 3, and Dragon’s Dogma.

So why are we bringing him up now? Well, this legendary designer is planning to make a variety of appearances at Japan Expo this weekend. Capcom recently announced that Ikeno will be on hand for a live drawing session as well as meet-and-greet signings over the next few days.

If you’re planning to attend this convention, a rough outline of Ikeno’s schedule has been included below.

Friday, August 22 – 6:45 PM-7:45 PM
Saturday, August 23 – 3:30 PM-4:30 PM, 8:30 PM-9:30 PM
Sunday, August 24 – 11:00 PM-12:00 PM

Japan Expo is set to take place throughout this weekend at the San Mateo Event Center in San Mateo, California. Further information on the convention can be found on their official website.*

Someone from California should go and shake his hand.
