Yes I’m new here, but I’ve put my time in on ST back in the day and SF4 since vanilla. I recently gave up SF4 having decided I always wanted it to be more than it is. Anyway, I’ve picked up 3S and I can’t believe I pretty much skipped it’s heyday. I hope it keeps it’s head above water b/c I’d like to put some serious time into this game and hope there’ll people to get matches with.
Anyway, I’ve realized while getting bodied repeatedly online that I enjoy getting stomped in 3S more than when I was getting wins in SF4. It leaves me feeling like the guy who kicked my ass just earned it and it is usually clearly obvious why I lost the match. In contrast, on the rare occasion I get a win in 3S I don’t feel like I won it b/c I took a bunch of damage which filled up my revenge gauge and landed a DP -> FADC -> Ultra to steal a match.
I just feel like trading parries for an Ultra gauge and Focus attacks has not made the game any easier for would be recruits. It has just made it less honest and more random. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wouldn’t it have been better to just make input frames a little more forgiving. I feel like it would have been easier and more interesting to keep everything from 3S but just make it so people don’t have to sit in training mode all day b/c they’re having trouble connecting 1 frame links. Yes, new players to like me would still be getting bodied, but many times in 3S it’s easier to see the problem and learn from it. “Man every time I do a cr.F -> Fireball he parries it and punishes me. Hmm, maybe I should mix things up so he doesn’t do that so much.” I think it would be much easier to focus on learning things like mix ups and setups than sitting in training mode wondering WTF my fingers just won’t remember the s$%t they need to be doing. My execution isn’t that bad, but it’s something that I’ve always had to practice endlessly, time I think would be better spent focusing on thinking side of these games.
Anyway that’s just my opinion and I could be wrong, but I’ve been wondering for a while if anyone agrees that instead of dumbing down and randomizing game mechanics, the execution should just be made a little easier. (BTW I’m not talking about input shortcuts. I don’t find them necessary. I’m just talking about frame leniency.)
BTW if anyone wants to get some matches with a scrub whose hoping to get into 3S, my xbox live id is: l gibbon l
Could’ve just posted this in Fighting Game General Discussion but I agree somewhat. I’m not sure if you’re saying that 3S has a difficulty in executing specials because I’ve never had that problem and when I play any of the modern Capcom games the inputs are so loose I can’t try anything advanced without a move I didn’t want coming out. There’s still 1 frame links in 3S, off the top of my head there’s Dudley’s tHK into SA and Yun’s kara-cancel command grab.
Louiscipher: yeah, I thought about postin it in the general fight disc, but since I was bringing up a bunch of 3S ref I figured it would just start a parries vs no-parries flame war. And to answer your question, its actually strange but some inputs I find more forgiving in 3S and some more so in SF4. To make it fair, if Im not plinking I have trouble linking some normals in SF4, while in 3S not really. In 3S I have trouble getting the inputs of my supers in at the end of hit confirms. It just feels like my window of opportunity for the super is much smaller than SF4. For example, Ken’s l.forward --> SA3 is no problem if I’m just doin the input, but if I tried to set a dummy on random block, Im pretty sure my reaction speed will never be good enough to confirm it properly. In SF4 I never had any issues with hit confirms.
But I guess in relation to my point, if I compare it to skullgirls which I almost never play, I would have to work hard to drop reasonable length combos in that game. In that respect I feel like all someone worries about in SG is gameplay issues b/c the inputs are seriously ridiculously easy. Im not a fan of Marvel style gameplay tho and thats why Im here.
araider08: Haha yes, I do get bodied, 95% of the time. It all good tho. I’m more interested in improving my game than the outcome of rounds right now.
Well when I’m in training mode obv, yes, but online is my only option for matches right now. When I’m talking about dropping combos tho, I’m def referring to offline.
