384x224 Resolution and CPS2 games

Although these games were played on 4:3 CRTs, for some reason they have native widescreen resolution. I did some googling, even ran a search here and read a thread in which people were stating the games were meant to be fitted into a 4:3 aspect ratio and that they’ll look too “fat” or wide without doing so. However, I feel as if the sprites actually look correct at the original resolution the game outputs, even if the displays of the time were using 4:3.

Here is a sprite rip of Sakura and a screenshot of Street Fighter Alpha 2 in it’s native resolution.

As you can see, it’s literally identical in appearance to how the sprite is before being outputted via the system and game. I don’t see this as being too wide or anything either, it looks the most “correct”. Am I wrong here?

Want to know how you can tell? Find a perfect circle graphic in the game and then look at it at 4:3 and look at it at 16:9. If it’s oval shaped at 16:9, then it’s meant to be 4:3. If it’s shaped like a 0 instead of O at 4:3, then it’s meant to be 16:9.

Stuff like that is the easiest way to see what was meant to be.
