2014 Firebrand Team Building Guide and discussion

It really is match-up dependent. I’ve been playing that team for over a year now and I still switch which one I’m using based on the match-up, or how I’m feeling that day. Like you said, Missiles is better for Dormammu and Plasma Beam is better for Firebrand. Try to focus on whichever character is better in the match-up.

Like, Missiles is super hard for Firebrand to protect vs Magneto or Zero, but it helps Dormammu in those match-ups a lot.

On the other hand, characters like Wolverine or Vergil tend to be handled better by Firebrand when he has Plasma Beam, but the Dormammu part of the team will suffer a bit.

All three of Doom’s assists work well for both Firebrand and Dormammu. You just need to recognize which one is best for which team. I tend to prefer Missiles for aerial characters, Rocks for rushdown character, and Plasma Beam for anything else.

Thanks for the advice! I actually think of Plasma Beam as a bit defensive for Dorm (because of his lack of good horizontal options) since Doom does appear in the back. It is very universal. Plasma Beam + Dorm zoning may not be on the level of Dorm + Missiles zoning, but it’s still solid IMO.

I’m not saying Plasma Beam is bad for Dormammu. I tend to use Plasma Beam as my main assist, and the full screen coverage is useful. However, most of the top tiers have an answer to Dormammu’s zoning that Plasma Beam doesn’t help. I tend to prefer Beam for characters with no teleports or poor air options. Being able to lock them down at full screen with Plasma Beam is nice, but it’s no use when someone can teleport behind you.

Yo Kresent, I was wanting to dick around with a side FB team and since I ran the IM(RB)/RR(Log) team for about a year back with X23 point I was thinking of messing with FB/IM/RR.

Reading through here it looks like it might be worth looking at, but I was curious what the overall consensus was since posts about that team were pretty old.

Anyone ever look to see if the hard tag IM stuff was as reliable as Dooms and is FB + Log worthwhile? (Don’t know enough about FB combos to know if the wall bounce loss is an issue.)

Thanks in advance. (Also, saw some of your recent play with the switch to Hitbox, good shit on picking it up so quickly.)

@Merkyl999x‌ Thanks man! I’m working pretty hard on it. Hoping to be at full steam with in by The Fall Classic. There are a lot of things I can definitely do a lot better, like plink dashing and wall clinged fireballs. I hope to get some more footage of myself out soon, because I haven’t really had anything new since Final Round.

Firebrand/IronMan/Rocket Raccoon is pretty good. The problem is that Firebrand tends to like Unibeam more than Repulsor Blast. However, it is pretty good for him regardless because it works equally as well (if not better) than Skrull’s assist. Unfortunately the team struggles with damage issues outside of infinites, and the DHCs aren’t the best. Iron Man’s hard tags from Firebrands tend to be very lackluster or character specific. I think Log Trap would be pretty good for Firebrand, though you’re right about the wall bounce problem. But since it bounces on its own, you should still be able to do corner-to-corner combos even if it hits. I’d prefer a beam over Log Trap though.

It’s a good team, but it is a little one dimensional. Firebrand needs the TACs to be able to kill, even off of unblockable hits. Otherwise, the damage can hold it back. It doesn’t really have a strong back-up plan if you don’t get the unblockable (as far as the Firebrand part of the team though. Idk how Iron Man/Rocket Raccoon is on its own).

BTW everyone, check out the Firebrand Shoryuken Wiki when you get the chance. I’ve been editing it a lot and adding a lot of info that every Firebrand player should be aware of. I guess because my name was already on the “Players to Watch” section on Firebrand’s page, they let me have an account to work on it. Let me know if you want anything added.

I’ve mainly edited few small things, and added the paragraphs in the advanced tactics sessions.

MERKL!!! whats up dude!!!

Honestly with raw tags with iron man and firebrand is ok, but its not even close to a replacement for dooms raw tags. You can net some decent damage but its very position specific, (not character specific so if you know you can net a raw tag it will work on everyone). so if you want to use tony INSTEAD of doom your going to be losing out on damage.

Iron man, IMO is one of firebrands best partners, however his biggest problem is that he doesn’t work as well with firebrands other best partners. so your going to be making sacrifices to make stuff work. So if your going to rock Iron-brand, you best off running either my team, Firebrand/Iron man/Doom or Firebrand/Dorm/Iron man

Don’t get me wrong Firebrand/Iron man/racoon can def work, esp since the neutral with both repulor and log trap sounds dumb as hell, that team WILL take a huge hit to damage output, especially since team supers won’t work too well.

Kresent, I’m gonna try and learn FB/Dorm/Dante. What do you reckon?

I know it hasn’t got a beam but I’m getting really decent with Dorm/Dante.

I posted a lot of this in the ultimate team thread but I figure I should post it here too to get your opinion on a third for my fb/doom/xxx team.

First of all, I want to run two teams.

  1. Firebrand/doom/XXX
  2. Modok/XXX/doom

I’d prefer to learn one character that I can fit into both teams, but am willing to learn two separate characters to optimize both teams

Here are teh choices I’m looking at

Super Skrull - for the firebrand team, this seems ideal. what I want most out of the firebrand team is to be able to kill my opponent’s biggest threat immediately, even if it means using x factor. With skrull, I can do a FB combo, snapback, into unblockable and spend x factor on the doom hard tag. Now, I’ve never done it, but there are a lot of videos of apologyman doing this, so if i do decide to go with skrull i can always research indepth strategies of said team. The biggest problem for me, is that I have little to no skrull experience, and hvaing him in back with no x factor seems like i’m really playign the game with just FB/doom and an assist. Also, I dont think Skrull works well with modok/doom, so i’d have to learn another character juts for that team anyway

Amaterasu - I’ve never used the dog, but i’ve heard that Ammy can setup some unblockables with fb? Also, seems good for locking down and mixing up. ALSO, i’ve seen Moons use her with nova and modok so there is synergy there. problem again becomes that I’d have to learn the dog from scratch.

Dormammu - Modok/Dorm/Doom is a fairly strong shell and I’ve played Dorm in the past. How does FB/Doom/Dorm work? can i setup some decent unblockable setups the wya I can with tenderizer? he’s an ideal choice for me since i have familiarity with his moves.

Any character I should look at that’s not listed? How do the three I listed differ? I know krescent plays fb dorm doom but isn’t apology mans team “better” since I can set up unblockable a without meter usage?

Wish u were on stream more krescent, because I was hoping to see a lot of your theory crafting in action. U are awesome tho.

My personal opinion,
Ammy works best for those teams, but then I’d also suggest switching up the second team to Modok/Doom/Ammy. If you insist on having Doom anchor on the second team then Skrull would be the better option (if you only want to learn one character). FB and Dorm kind of works but it’s a really meter hungry (and you’re never going to be able to satisfy their thirst for meter. You’ll always come up short). However I’d say Dorm works best for the second team.

In short:
If you’re looking for one character to fit in both those slots as they’re listed: Skrull
If you’re looking for one character, but are flexible on team order: Ammy
If you’re looking for the best characters for each team individually: Team 1 could use either Skrull or Ammy and you’ll be fine and Team 2 would use Dorm.

Damn I’m pretty far behind here.

@Helter Skelter I know we’ve already talked some since then but I’m really sorry about missing your post. You still trying to play that team? I can give you my opinion still.

@kensanity Dormammu is a lot of fun but I wouldn’t recommend learning him for Firebrand. I’ve been running into almost exclusively bad match-ups in tournament for about a year now . I’m still going to run the team if I think having Dormammu would help a lot, but I’ve switched over to Firebrand/Doom/Amaterasu now. The team is just way more cheap and controlling that my old one. I would really recommend learning Amaterasu. She is tough, but she’s a lot of fun once you get the hang of her. And having her with Firebrand just lets you do so much cool stuff.

If you learn Amaterasu, you can basically put any character in front of Doom/Amaterasu and have some degree of success. Or you can learn Dormammu and Skrull. Modok/Dormammu/Doom, Firebrand/Doom/Skrull.

Thanks though, I really appreciate that! I got on stream vs Zayboo and JWong at KIT if you didn’t get to see it. I really want to get top 8 at Final Round with Firebrand/Doom/Amaterasu, so we’ll see how I do.

Thanks for the Input krescent I tried the dog for a bit and she was great but j just couldn’t play her well. I’ve switched to fb/doom/ironman and I think it’s just as end game as any other firebrand she’ll with the exception that you need a TAC eventually and that if they get out there’s a chance u may have to play ironman lol

Regardless I enjoy ironmans style ironically

@kensanity, what would be an optimal combo for firebrand raw tag to ironman? I really wanna play firebrand, ironman (repulsar), sent (drones). I too really like ironmans style too.
