2013 SSF4 A.E. Zangief Change list

Doesn’t sound terrible; I’d rather use s.mk if it’s a better poke than s.mp.

  • I’ve never really known what the purpose of close lk was. At a glance, seems like the penalty for poor spacing, when you want far lk.

  • I disagree. Quick Double Lariat is immediately invincible against low tiger shot, and requires startup anticipation for the other projectiles.

  • Faster standing MP? Utter nonsense.

  • cr.LK with more frame advantage on hit would be awesome, hello low starter combo.

  • Banishing Flat should have the all fireball negation frames towards the end, or some how Zangief spins faster. So you can use it as an approach or you get a greater reward (more +frames) on a successful yet difficult banish.

You disagree with those changes? I think they’re great, especially the quick lariat. That’d make Gief a bit better against zoning.

If they nerf Gief again then I’m just going straight to T.Hawk, I’m sick of this bs. There’s no doubt that every single one of his bad or iffy mu’s are gonna get better so where’s that leave him?

If that was so, projectile characters could NEVER zone out the Atomic Ace. As from that spacing, KKK Lariat would not be punishable. Zangief would always be within EXGH range, with a few character exceptions.

Against Sagat, the ability of FA to hit him crouching, would help greatly - as it takes care of both high and low tiger.

That’s not true. Characters could still throw slow projectiles to bait out a lariat; it’d just be harder to punish. FADC’ing is still an option, too. And it’s not like dodging projectiles moves us that much closer or gives us any glaring advantages other than a bit of meter and not getting chipped. We’re still being spaced (zoned) out. What characters would that change make zoning impossible for?

They should make ex green hand 7frame startup

With the instant projectile invincibility on KKK, you effectively neutralize the zoners game, for when you sit around Kara exgh range. You have the instant projectile reaction of PPP lariet but without its drawback - it’s killer lag. Against most of the projectile throwing cast, they can’t chip you, as you can safely answer and move backwards with KKK. By design, Zangief is at a disadvantage unless he’s close.

After the change, only slow projectiles would retain their zoning, and even to bait out and publish KKK lariat, I don’t think is possible. Since these characters need to have the slow projectile and a fast enough forward moving attack. And even then, you would never KKK against those slow projectiles. You would gain ground against the projectile and guess their pressure. You would close them to the corner far too easily.

Sagat would effectively be reduced to st.HK as no amount of tiger shots on earth, could touch you. Same with Shotos. Dhalsim, guile, deejay would lose the ability to mixup their speeds. And the faster EX projectiles would be useless.

As easy as it is to upback Zangief in the neutral game, I don’t see this being a problem for most of the cast. All it would do is make us not take as much chip and slightly reduce pressure from right outside EX hand range to full screen. Shotos would be largely unaffected since we can neutral jump projectiles on reaction. This change makes Sagat easier; that’s all. Guile, Chun, Dhalsim, Seth, Dee Jay, Juri, Gouken, Rose and Sakura can all still bait either lariat with slow projectiles and you’d be in the same situation as you would now. Sagat is the only problem since the height variations in TS makes neutral jumping the HP version essentially a 50/50 guess at closer ranges. If TS only had one height, this wouldn’t even be an issue.

Most of the things I would like Zangief to have aren’t currently moves in the game.

The short quick low hop that he had in Super Turbo.
This would help bridge distances without putting him at risk for whiffed green hand (or actually block/hit) This would help some of his harder matchups (Sagat/Seth/fireballers)

A drop kick type move similar to El Fuerte.
Another bridge move but overhead quality. Doesn’t need to be comboable - but definitely punishable on block. Would be great for reads against backdashes or going over low fireballs or low profile attacks. Would help immensely in the Sagat and Seth match as they wouldn’t want to use low fireballs or Seth’s low hp at certain ranges. At far ranges they would be fine, but near GH territory - it would be a meterless way of reacting to those moves.

A regular air throw.
A non meter usage punish for jumping away. Could up the difficulty by making it an air command grab - but it would overall make the oki game even better. Wouldn’t help too much against Sagat or Seth though. Would help against Akuma though.

Change ST. HP
Currently, even with the knockdown on it - its pretty unreliable. Either reduce startup so you can use it in a combo. (wouldn’t need ex greenhand when HP knocks down in a combo) Or change it to be useful anti-air.

Reducing range on lp SPD
As it stands, it is a powerful tool with great footsie potential. But his already good matchups got way better with the increased range. Reduce some of his better matchups so you can increase his worse matchups. We want 5/5s not 7/3s.

Make Medium versions of moves useful.
I’m not sure what to say on this. But as it stands, MP SPD is pretty useless, either you’re in range for LP SPD or want the damage from HP. Potentially add a property to it? Same with Suplex, Greenhand, and Bear Grab (but that move is stupid and should either be buffed for increased speed or removed)

Reduce his damage across the board.
Give him tools to do the damage and have consistent pressure would help his bad matchups and reducing his damage would help even the playing field for his good matchups.

It’d be great to see his utility improved. I don’t expect to see such great changes though, even with such a limited moveset.

Pretty sure 2013 will just remove Gief from the game.

Ideally I would just want all the shit he lost to be given back to him and some of these buffs suggested in this thread.

What will most likely happen is he’ll be nerfed once again, but they’ll buff something dumb like cl. Lk

Just what I expected. This is gonna be a total nightmare for Gief players and there’s no way he’s getting significant buffs imo. At least Hawk’s getting better so I might go to him for good.

looks like i’m dropping zangief lol . he will be officially outclassed, if he doesn’t get some serious buffs. the chun match up just got a lot worse

If he doesn’t get the ex.gh kd again then it’s all over for him as a character.

The ST short hop was good in certain situations, but overall it was bad for Gief since he couldn’t use st.mp when he was blocking or walking forward. I wouldn’t like that being added at all.

T.Hawk is looking mad strong, I agree. But let’s just wait until we have any idea on what’s going on with Gief before we jump ship.

Telling you all right now gief will get nerf, but one shitty thing about him will get buffed, and Capcom will call it a day with him.
