The collective reduction in enforcement activity by police officers is not an action of protest. It is a safety precaution. No one wants to get their head blown off while writing a summons.
Just like journalists are taking note: If you’ve been able to drop the amount of arrests so drastically and there has been no jump in crime, why haven’t you done this before?
A lot of the reaction I see to those articles come from white people who don’t know how it feels like to be stopped whenever you go to the corner store. I wouldn’t even mind bringing stop-and-frisk back if it were applied to EVERY New York neighborhood at the same frequency. Bring it to Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Manhattan, Wall Street, West Village, East Village, Murray Hill, Upper West Side, Hell’s Kitchen, Long Island City, Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn, Green Point, Clinton Hill, Bushwick (all my life I never thought I’d say that Bushwick is going to be a “white” town), and shit.
Once I see that the cops are also frisking Joe Red State I won’t really complain that blacks and Latinos are also being patted down randomly. I just wanna see equal numbers.
Crime numbers tend to drop overall during the winter due to the cold weather. Also it takes time for crime to increase after a reduction in proactive policing occurs. An increast in crimed won’t happen in two weeks, especially in the winter.
As a minority from the bronx.I know what it feels like to be stopped and frisked, it sucks and it’s degrading. No one wants to be groped against their will when they’re just going about their daily routine. But it’s a small price to pay to ensure our safety. Stop, Question and Frisk gets guns and criminals off the street. It’s no coincidence that once the department scaled back on the practice, shootings went up 25%. Some precincts (like the 47) experienced nearly doubl the shooting incidents once SQF was reduced by 97%.
Stop and frisk is needless. Countless studies/observations/etc… have been done on the issue and the biggest deterrent to crime isn’t random searches, it’s simply having cops around. If it’s known that a cop or 2 walking the beat, crime will come down. Don’t let these pigs fool you into thinking that “police presence” has to mean them throwing niggas up against the wall for no reason.
A few things, first, the police don’t “throw niggas up against the wall for no reason.” And the police don’t nor have they ever engaged in random stops. Most Stop, Question and Frisks occur as a result of a victim or witness calling 911 for a crime in progress. If a person matches the description of the perp who committed the crime then the police in turn stop question and frisk the oerson. In a city where there are a little under 200,000 reported felonies and misdemeanors per years it’s not unreasonable to believe that a large number of people will be stopped.

It’s always funny how something can dominate the news, yet people still have no clue. NYPD has been officially “randomly” stopping and frisking people for no reason for around 15 years now. One of the platforms the current mayor ran on was getting doing away with the policy, the police were quite nonplussed.

Yes, posthumous promotions happen. It gets the surviving family more money, and also serves to show respect for the officer’s service. I don’t think scumbag officers get the same courtesy…or maybe they do out of pity for their family if everybody in the precinct knows there’s some shit happening at home.
