1st Time @ EVO - What Should I Expect?

As the title says, I am 99% certain that I will be making the trip for EVO 2013. Being that this will be my first time attending and competing at a major tournament, I have a few questions that I hope that a previous attendee (or a staff member) could answer for me. My wife will be making the trip as well, and we plan on arriving 2-3 days beforehand so we can spend time together before the tournament. Anywho, questions inc:

1.) I’ve read about seating issues with the venue in previous years. Are portable chairs going to be allowed into the hall where the event is going to be held?

2.) I know that last year, you could check-in online and see what pool you were in. Is this going to be implemented for 2013?

3.) How good is the handicapped accessibility going to be? If my wife wants to watch one of my matches, I don’t want her to walk through an ocean of people to watch, and if she’s using a rental scooter; I don’t want her to upset anyone who may end up watching the match.

4.) The largest event I have been to is Quakecon in 2011, and the personalities (John Carmack, etc etc) were real approachable and would sign anything if asked nicely enough. Is there a rule of thumb (or a hangout booth/area/etc) if I wanted someone (I’ll use Alex Valle as my example here) to sign my stick? I know that obviously, I would use common sense

5.) How early should I book my flight and hotel? I was planning on securing the accommodations around the 18th of January when I get my refund check from college.

Thanks, and I look forward to the responses!

  1. I heard Caesars staff got pissed off by people moving chairs into the main hall and camping out. Evo Staff talked about having more space and seating for next Evo though. I thought finals seating was superb.
  2. I hope so! I thought it worked well.
  3. Evo gets bigger every year so more than likely the ballroom will be packed, there’s some really rude fuckers out there but for the most part I think handicapped accessibly will be accommodated.
  4. Depends how busy they are, but I’m fairly certain they are at least approachable during the right circumstances
  5. Early as possible, you get the best rates and discounts around that time.

During last year (and I’m assuming this year) MadCatz had their team at their booth for autograph sessions throughout the day.
I saw tons of people walking around with signed sticks (which personally I think is stupid. But it’s whatever)

Let me phrase what I meant by portable seating, that being chairs that you can buy from like Wal-Mart. I have no intention of camping out in chairs from the venue.

Last year was my first EVO (I’m from Brazil btw) and it was a blast!

I’m pretty sure your wife will be able to watch the matches, because I saw that Brolly Legs was there playing and watching the finals, people was pretty helpfull and respectfull with him, helping him and moving out of the way, so I think your wife will be fine.
I’d recommend you taking a room in the same hotel as EVO, because moving outside the hotels in Vegas is like walking inside hell. So damn hot and popullated… I was in a hotel wich was just the other side of the street of Caesar’s, and even this little walk from one hotel to another across the street made me sweat a lot.

In general, the “personalities” are pretty approachable and welcoming. Of course you have to not be the guy that comes in interrupting conversations and such… I talked to Mago, CrisG, Valle, Choi, Wong, etc… and they all were very receptive with me. JS Master too but he is basically brazillian now so he’s pretty approachable by us hehehe. Same for Combofiend next year :stuck_out_tongue:
I mean, just don’t be annoying and they will treat you well.

About buying flight and hotel, well, do it as soon as you can so you can pay a bit less. As June approaches, prices begin to rise exponentially, at least here in Brazil…

Hope you have fun and sorry about the “engrish”

1.) Very unlikely. The venue provides seating.

2.) Most likely.

3.) The venue has historically been accessible to people with disabilities. If you need some help, wave down a judge or other Evo volunteer. We’re here to help.

4.) In my experience, most of the high profile players are awesome, down to earth people.

5.) As early as possible. Keep an eye on the front page for hotel announcements. I highly recommend booking your room as soon as the rates and promotional codes are posted.

I look forward to seeing you there!
