you eliminated me from vf5 last year at mwc =(i was said. qualified tho haha
Good job.
Would it be possible if you could upload it so I could download this and not in the youtube quality?
imma have to stop you right there. the whole world knows that 1994 official capcom tourney is the most important of all time. where else do you get the famous comeback line of all time!
minnesota crew : WATSON! you suck!!
watson : suck on your mom’s titties!!!
im sorry, priceless forever!
Don’t know how I missed this thread for so many days, but a big thank you for posting the vids. I will definitely watch them all when I have more time. This was right around the time that SF was starting to not be as important to me due to other things I had going on in my life. I actually remember driving to the UTC Yellow Brick Road a couple of times to play that ST beta when they got it. Good times, I miss arcades.
I’m actually learning ST now on GGPO, heh, never got around to learning it properly.
Subscribes.
I agree! That’s the line I’ve always remembered. I like it too one match later after you beat me down, the camera man said jokingly, “you still suck.” You just turned slowly and gave him the eye. Too funny!!
I always thought the most important tourneys were the ones where the arcade machine DOESN’T turn off when Watson is playing in a tournament match.
Pre-determined hand cuffs!
You know if Sirlin were here in this thread he would totally take credit for it. To this day he says he came up with the name. I had no say in the matter, go figure lol! :xeye:
I gotta agree with ya there, Omni. This particular tournament kicked off a broader national scene altogether.
Funny facts about that story too. I had to pack lightly so instead of wearing normal clothes that would wrinkle in a suitcase I simply wore 3 different puma/adidas/playboy(yeah, I said playboy…mad 80’s trivia for you og’s)jogging suits…so technically they’re not “Jumpsuits” but anyway. These were the last of my bboy/poplock days so I figure why the hell not wear my stuff in style. To this day people ask “Jesse why don’t you sport the “suits” anymore?” LOL!
I assure you, I didn’t. All I know is that when I logged onto mIRC a few days later I was mysteriously labeled by the SF community.
I’ll say this. It was a really interesting experience meeting so many players. I freaked out whenever Maxstah would lose a match and he would yell “I SUCK!” and slam his hand on the machine! And watching Omar Deloney keep his cool under the most intense pressure was also cool to see. But what really took me by surprise was seeing Rob Ingram go apeshit after losing to that “twitchy” kid that played Yun from Minnesota. For some reason that guy got on so many people’s nerves and Rob just lost it in mid-match! Choi and Alex had to chase him down and bring him back to earth.
Also, this was the tournament where we met Tee Carter. This was probably the coolest player I had ever met. He was a really great Ibuki player and his Vega in ST was crazy. When I heard about him passing away later I was really upset. This guy woulda been a top player today had he lived…no doubt in my mind.:china:
It may have been…but I think it was a calling to other players as well. Keep in mind that the internetz were still kinda new and the faster the word got out(thanks to Gamepro and the A2 Guide)the more players wanted to compete. 1997 was the first step in the right direction. But of course you cannot leave out B3. You guys had international players from the ME come out to play! Crazy!
Watson, you scared me when you lifted your eyebrows at me and asked “Hey brah, ya wanna hang out?”:crybaby:
LOL!!! Too funny! Wes and I remember this well, and I haven’t thought about it in years. The twitchy person you refer to was part of the Minnesota crew. His name is Brian and he had tourettes (sp). He was the king of hand watchers and fake-outs although I don’t think it gave him an edge over the elite players.
Was Rob kind of a dick or was he a cool guy? All I know is he didn’t make a good impression on us that day. Not to say though that Brian didn’t piss people off, because he did from time to time. He was a good guy though. I haven’t heard from him in over 10 years.
That same day Rob got his hand smashed in a door. I was standing right there thinking it was the most painful thing I’ve ever seen. It was a super strong hinged door that shut by itself with IMMENSE force. Rob’s hand was up top and BAM! Honestly I’m surprised he has fingers left.
Some more random trivia for the young’un’s about SJG 97.
Everyone for some reason another really hated Twitchy during this tournament. People hated him so much that Maxtah put out a bounty on him!! I forget how much but Maxstah put in some money to start it then more and more fools kept adding money.
Unfortunately Twitchy kept beating people!! He even beat Valle on the way to the winners bracket. Fortunately on the side of ‘good’ we have the Korean Inferno John Choi who beat him 3-0 and won the bounty! Someone will have to ask Choi how much he won from the bounty.
Then dirty choi and valle teamed up (keep in mind that So Cal and Nor Cal hated one another) in what Watson has called one of the worst moments in SF history. Over the course of the weekend everyone was becoming better friends and in the interest of California winning Choi told Valle to play the character Alex against Twitchy (valle tried Ken earlier and lost). Valle beat him (i forget the score) then afterwards shouted out, ‘California Power!!’ thus earning him his nickname.

Oh man all this stuff should be saved on some kind of wiki of sorts. Something that’ll have stuff about OG players and the origins of their nicknames.
These videos are amazing and instant classics. It brings me back memories of playing SF in its glory days when I was 9 at Beach & Warner, Cameran’s, and Golfland. That was such a long time ago, but boy was it fun. Thanks Jesse for posting these up.
This is some truly classic shit, THANK YOU!
Man it would have been so amazing to have an arcade then, everyone in my neighborhood was afraid of my Vega and wouldn’t play :smokin:
Money sent for the DVD, Jesse.
Thanks again!
Wow this brings back memories. So much in fact that I went home and dug out some old pics from this event.
What omni said is pretty much on the money. But I don’t remember how much the bounty was since it was so long ago. I’m guessing various people threw in like 10-20 each and it came out to like 100-150 bux?
And this was indeed the moment where Alex got his nick from. I think Rob picked up his “CaliSean” nick right after this as well.
The thing I remember most about this tourney is that it was a turning point in the SF rivalry between Norcal and Socal. Alex and I were big rivals up to this point and not really all that close. But this weekend changed everything.
Due to various reasons, me, Alex, Rob, and Mark were stuck at a layover in Phoenix with no way to get on a flight to Chicago (in time for the tourney) or a flight to get back home. Apparently, all the flights to Chicago were completely booked and we didn’t have much choice but to wait it out for a day or 2 for a chance to get on a Chicago flight, which would be too late. After some long discussion with a very nice lady at the counter, there was about a 20% chance that we could catch a flight to Chicago by going to Las Vegas first. Since it was either that or go back home, we decided to take the chance. But our flight to Vegas was not for another 8 hours or so. Fortunately, my sister was in grad school in Arizona at that time so I called her up and she was able to pick us all up, give us food, then we all crashed out at her tiny studio for a few hours. Then she dropped us off at the airport and we were on our way to Vegas.
Once in Vegas, we had another 5 hours or so until the connecting flight. Fortunately, Alex called up Apoc and he entertained us for a while until it was time for our flight. The moment of truth had come and we were all about to cry when we found out the flight was full…except for the 1st class seats that were available that we could upgrade to. The upgrade was only $50 so we gladly paid it and got in. That was probably the best airplane ride ever, feeling vindicated by 1st class treatment after being stuck at airports for 2 days straight.
We missed the first day of the tourney but arrived just in time for the main events. We landed around 7AM then met Seth and Omni for the first time went straight to the tournament. The rest of the weekend was filled with not just sharing of strats and tactics but unforgettable good times.
With me and Alex being united together, this kind of changed the North and South rivalry to more like WC vs EC. And this would later evolve to US vs Japan…
What I’ve enjoyed the most out of my Street Fighter hobby is all the friendships I’ve made over the years. I look at this pic and I find it incredible that all the same peeps are still in the scene and the friendships still continue.
no one cares how you guys first fucked. jeez.
i love story time
OH MAN
Twitchy…
