Good lord those videos were awesome shit! Thanks for sharing!
I too cannot believe how much attention this post has already received. I knew it would be a gem, but I’m happy to see how many people are enjoying it. I, like you, didn’t really play Super Turbo that much while I was there. Mainly I didn’t want to play because I wanted Super to be fresh on my mind. Three weeks before the tourney however I went there with my older friend just to scope out the scene. Hardly anyone was there but the beta ST was there. We were shocked!!! We had no idea that would be there. Good thing back then SJG was Capcom’s offcial Midwest test site.
Speaking of test sites, does anyone remember the Slam Masters tournament held by Capcom? The first round qualifiers for Midwest were I think at SJG. The second or maybe final MW qualifiers were held at our local arcade in Minneapolis. I think somehow the manager of our arcade, Picadilly Circus at the Ridgedale mall somehow conviced a Capcom rep to have it there. These two guys from Chicago came and kicked our asses. They used a pattern over and over that we couldn’t beat. I haven’t thought about that in years. And now that I think about it I still have at least three of the Slam Master T-Shirts!! =)
Step up your fighting game history. There was way more drama back then. The West Coast used to REALLY hate East Coast players.
Really? We got along great with Mike and Steve. New York and Cali. Granted it was up state…which is basically like Ethiopia.
After watching the 3rd vid (again), what Chris said was true. There wasn’t SHIT to do in Binghamton, New York. I was a manager at Aladdins Castle, so basically just let the very small niche community play for free after hours. I can honestly say I don’t miss that town one bit.
First of all:
JUST WOW!!!
I don’t know, I don’t know if you know who I am, but I long time ago scanned in the GamePro feature for the tournament:

Have the Tomo Ohira thread here:

This is beyond anything I dared dream. Thankyou. Its spooky after knowing you from the magazine article from so long ago.
I actualy remember the the GamePro report of the ‘Bama’ tournament, I’ve been trying to get hold of a scan of that from the people in the plot guide thread who come up with alot of interesting old material, but no luck so far. I don’t know if its the pattern you are describing, but I remember the specific re-dizzy that was printed in the article… Didn’t Jason Nelson win that tourney?
Anyway I’ve only just come on after couple of weeks away, I’ve got to get back to the first post, post-haste. THankyou thankyou thankyou :encore::encore::encore:
Yeah Eddies at 6:50 playing Spence in video P03.
Its funny because in Gamepro they fucked up and put that same (skinny-dark haired) guy in the mag in place of Eddie!
It’s so funny that you say that! Me and my friend were from Grand Rapids, MI and when we walked in there we saw a bunch of people on the machines playing Sagat and doing Zangief’s magic throw. We were like W…T…F?! We had never even heard of the magic throw. Very few people played Zangief in our area, and the few that did weren’t very good, and almost nobody played Sagat. We knew right then that we were in for some trouble.

whats funny about this comment is nelson was vs graham wolfe in the “intermediate” version of BAMA. there were 3 levels and it was beginner = noobs and kids, intermediate = girls that didnt wanna play vs the best, and elite = pros!!! so yes, nelson won, but it was the girl tourney he won LOL!!! tomo took 1st in this which was his last tournament in controversial fashion winkwink* anyways, just thought i would give an update!!
(in this video pay note to about 5:10. this is why playing side by side is fun. incase you dont notice, fake sonic boom with the body language made jesse jump LOL!!! - sorry jesse, i just got a kick out of this since we dont play on cabs anymore )
A Nostalgic View from Texas
Amazing! Amazing footage!
I remember reading about this tournament in GamePro and seeing players like Watson, Jesse and Eddie being mentioned. Like Jesse Howard, from the time SSF2 came out I started to play Fei Long along with Ryu. Back then when SSF came out most players were turned off by the speed and flocked to games to like KI, Tekken games, MK2-UMK3. Street Fighter in general was starting lose alot of it’s steam so only the hardcore continued to play it in my area.
When I read about how people proclaimed Jesse Howard as having the best Fei Long I took it as a personal mission to be just as good if not better. Back then we didn’t have internet vids and raw footage was hard to get ahold of. Watching him play I can easily see just how different our styles were. Had it not been for Jesse Howard and Watson/Tomo showing their faces in Gamepro I probably would have given up playing SF a long time ago. Thanks guys :bgrin:
Since competition was dying in my area I had to rely on the SNES Xband Network to play good players(XBL eat your heart out!). Players like Jason Wilson(Dream Theater+), Battle Angel, Vincent Delpino, the whiney cry-baby brothers Dark Gaiden/Vintage kept me and Mike Zavar pretty sharp at SSF. As for the local comp it came down to a few locals…Me, Mike Zavar, Chris Wong, Adrian Ross and a few others…we pretty much kept SF2 alive for Houston. Long weekends playing on Super Guns and Sega Saturn… . .hangin out at a hole in the wall gameroom called The Video Wizard…spending tons of money and time honing our game. So from 1994-1997 SF2 had gone underground for the most part here in Houston. It wasn’t until 1997 when Mike Zavar and I had started playing SF3 like mad and we decided we needed to put Houston and Texas on the map…we were hungry and wanted to test our metal against the best. We drove from Houston to SJG and we met Jason Wilson, Jesse Howard, Wes T., Choi, Valle, Rob Ingram, Omar D, Maxstah…just to name a few. Eventhough SF3 was the primary game there was still a very fat following for ST and Alpha 2(which by that time had totally replaced SSF2).
Reading about the 1994 SJG tournament along with alt.games.sf2 and Xband gave us the inspiration to step up our game and play hard enough to compete with the best players in the nation. It was this tournament that sparked a fire here in Houston and now the local scene has evolved all on it’s own. Up until that time we had no idea just what we were missing and we are so glad we became a part of it.
This footage gives everyone a glimpse of what tournaments were like back then…full of rivalry and intensity. Today’s tournaments are still great but they lack the fire they did back then IMO.
Much thanks to Jesse Howard for finding and posting these great vids. And to all the OG’s…it ain’t over yet!:smokin:
May the wind always be at your back, and the sun always upon your face, and may the wings of destiny carry you aloft to dance with the stars
lmfao@ intermediate. Wow. Thats like signing up for the sissy olympics =D
Until this thread, I thought you and Jesse Howard were the same person, because both of you played Fei and both are named Jesse.
OMG 90’s! Big Johnson, rat tails, plaid shirts, ‘Love and Marriage’ in an arcade! Thanks for these vids!
Didn’t direct link before (its in the post with the GamePro scans) but, I found the point on alt.games.sf2 where the tourney happened:
Starting March 28 1994, goes into a fair amount of detail on the event.
Crayfish.:china:
lol… yeah mad '90s. I was about to talk shit about that white kid’s step fade and then I remembered I had one of those too!

dark gaiden and vintage? are these the two black brothers who also played HF on pad??
FUSON909
Yes, the ones that gloat about how godly they are on pads
They were the biggest cry babies on Xband. I pick on them about it every chance I get. They eventually got over the whole “cheap throws” taboo mentality and are now much better players. It just brings back memories when I think about all the “Xmail” I would open up and read all of their whiney complaints.
On a side note, DGV are obsessed with Jem n The Holograms. True story.:bgrin:
Nope. Jesse Howard and “Jumpsuit” Jesse Cardenas are two totally different people. I think Jesse has a much better Ken though. Even back then.
I wonder if anyone remembers that guy who would scream out every single special move at the top of his lungs while playing. I remember him being at the 97 tourney but I assume he’s a local and was probably there at the 94 SJG tourney. He would scream HADOKEN!!! SHORYUKEN!!! TATSUMAKISEMPYUUKYAKU!!!:wtf:
That guy cracked me up.
you know what
that is some funny shit
i believe i had setup a match with those two brothers many moons ago at cal poly (99’ or so) from agsf2…i didnt know they were pad players because they didnt seem too comfy on cabs because they seemed to struggle a bit…pretty good on console however, as i played them at the last EVO that was held at cal poly…ahh agsf2…those were the days
ps for shits and giggles i found this

I actually had the original tournament sign-up sheet when I took over the tourneys in 1997. There were 128 people that entered the tournament, though I think that may have been because they “capped it” at that, because I swore there were 180 on the signup sheets. It even had everyone’s city and phone numbers too! It was not until 1997 (Capcom ran tourneys there in 1994, 1995, and 1996) that we decided to go to multiple tournaments, and 1995 was ONLY Alpha I. There was never a Super Turbo version of this tournament, and this 1994 one was the only one ever held in March at the venue.
I stated in another thread, we still use the SAME cabinets for the tournament. Super Turbo will be used on those exact cabinets.
1997 ST Results I remember had Jesse Howard returning to the tournament, but Choi ending up winning. It was something like CHoi first, Seth or Sirlin second, and me, Seth, or Sirlin as 3rd or 4th.
It’s enjoyable to see things like this because it really was rare back in the day to find out ANY information on tournaments that were cross country.
I assume you’re talking about Datrick Orr from Nebraska (he used to call shoryus out loud…still does) but I think he only started coming to MWC in 98 (when 2nd impact came out).
He coulda been there in 97 though…I was only there briefly on the last day of that tourney and didnt stick around long.
