What are all the things taken into consideration? Does making the housing and electronics from scratch help in your design? I plan on getting buttons at least, but I’d be able to program a custom joystick myself.

You mentioned that free button mapping would be a plus, even though sc2 allows you to remap to whatever keys. I could program the buttons to do whatever I want, but making a user interface via PC to remap the buttons is beyond my range of expertise.

These are difficult things to answer in the absolute. The contest is to build a one-of-a-kind controller for Starcraft II in the spirit of a custom fighting game arcade stick. Part of the contest in interpreting what makes your design one of a kind.
