Man I’m missing something…good Cody’s don’t seem ANYWHERE near 7-3 lol…hell it feels almost reverse (It’s not just saying it feels the other way around)…his zoning ability is AWESOME…I almost picked him up as a Sim backup because of how well he can zone gief. But I also know that you can just walk him into the corner - he doesn’t do a great job of holding his spacing against good Gief footsies, and he lacks a get out of jail card. shrug IMO the match-up goes to the most knowledgable player…there is nothign complex on either side of the match-up short of knowing whats rock paper or scissors.
And rock start-up IMO isn’t important in the scheme of things, its just like Rose and her FB game - it isn’t the speed, its the timing and distance that make it worth while. The fact that he can hold the duration on rocks and they have a high arc makes them great for baits/zoning despite frame data. What changed for Cody in AE that affected the match-up? Or is it just Gief’s ‘changes’ ahem.
I think the changes to Cody only affect his combo-ability and rushdown. Oh, and he can pick up the knife better (which actually is important vs. gief). But the changes to gief probably affect this matchup more than anything.
Yea rocks startup is supposed to be slow; that’s why fake rocks can be effective.
I guess for gief to win - don’t let cody pick up the knife and bulldog your way to him. Lame is the name of the game here.
Cody’s easier to beat than makoto. All it takes is 1-2 knock downs his aa’s do no damage he’s got 0 wakeup mix up game. Most cody’s resort to baiting spd’s to nj hp punish which is a really bad idea. That mk that puts him in the air can be tricky and dealing with standing rh can be a bit troublesome. But he needs to play perfect if he wants to beat you. I don’t have any friends who play super high level cody’s so maybe the 4500 pp comp I play vs isn’t that good and there’s all these cody’s who are at tournements I’m not at that can woop me but I doubt it.
I think unreal said it best. The match up goes to the better player generally. On paper Gief definitely has the advantage (6-4 to me), but Cody is not a 7-3 pushover for Gief. The problem is there are not enough beastly level codys out there if anything.
I think the most notable player I’ve seen play Cody is Chris Hu.
EX GH nerf bridges the gap a bit more in this MU now IMO.
Ryan Hunter and Chris Hu are the only higher level cody’s I can think of.
As for the Balrog argument, He zones so well compared to Cody that it’s obviously not going to be 7-3. I’ve played some REALLY good Balrog’s and I’m having trouble believeing this is a 5-5. He’s got a better walk speed, arguably better backdash, and some dopeanti-gief normals (St. rh, J. rh/J. f, st. lp)
I can’t call it with Makato…either she destroys me or I destory her…always seems lopsided…I’ve only played a few ‘close’ matches with her. Its mostly my poor pressure defense and baitable lariats that doom me, but when I’m the aggressor - it seems everything short of her stupid standing mp is SPD bait.
And lol @ a poor timed command throw from Makato rush down leading to me landing my ultra
Are there any reliable methods to deal with Cammy’s Hooligan Combo? I’ve never been confident against it, I usually just jump out of the way. I’ve noticed that sometimes a lariat works, sometimes it doesn’t. It feels too inconsistent to use on a regular basis. Is there anything I can use (cr.mp?) to stuff it reliably?
I’m going to a local gathering this weekend and the only guy i’m really worried about has an incredible Cammy. I need to improve my matchup knowledge.
It abuses alot of Giefs, and even with those listed attacks, because he has ‘control’ in the air while doing it - it isn’t even a rock/paper/scissors counter.
St.RH works the furthest out…
df.rh is prolly the best option, but don’t time it too late as the recovery on it is a free combo from Honda…
St.FP and c.FP both beat it or trade if at the edge or outside of c.PPP range…not great by any means, w/o perfect timning, expect to trade, it does setup a ‘reel’ state however so there are a couple mind games you can try and add in right there. Don’t rely on it, just smething I found when testing how to get around it…
c.PPP doesn’t work on good Honda’s…they won’t put themselves in a position to get hit by it…but if you do, always look for EXGH follow-up in case of trade…
can someone give me some tips for balrog? My KKK lariot sometimes doesn’t even beat his dashing punches. So alot of balrogs will keep walking backwards throwing those out. If i do start to counter them successfully, they will start spamming crouching roundhouse, and then if i jump they will using crouching fierce punch. I know about the short jump I guess i could try that more.
-turtle the turtle. Dont need to dive head first to a rog turtle.
-dash punches? Just nj to sniff it out an land to spd/u1.
-walk forward with s.mp (and some lp xx ex gh OS’s)
-Have to know your spacing. The range where his s.hp and cr. hk just miss you is the range you can whiff punish with s.mp all day
-at some point when he is not down charged, you can j.mk. Will trade or beat cr.hp startup at the right range then you can get Gief on him
-once you get a untechable KD, time splashes to safe jump is wakeup HB from shitty rogs. Better rogs will either block/dash or ex dash punch on wake up, so plan accordingly.
Not easy, grinding match. But still really in Giefs favor (very slightly imo)
The match-up thread for Gief vs. Balrog says the key to this match is not lariating as much as possible. His low hitting dash punches have armor and he can just bait the tip of Lariat (which means Headbutt > Ultra). I’ve seen Zangitan fight some good Balrogs.
From what I saw, he did a lot of pacing (back and fourth). Turtle and force Balrog to come to you, or use st.mp to tap him and wait for him to whiff something. It’s a pretty rough match since approaching him at anytime he’s walking back means he can headbutt, you really need to look for this pattern in the player you fight. Learn Jab+SPD range. Don’t use RBG and don’t be reckless, his jump back fierce will kill you. You definitely have to be patient and never jump during his back charge. I’d also say work on crouching light kick combos into EX Hand.
You might be able to counter his EX Dash Punches with EX RBG, try it out in practice mode.
Is it possible to beat cammy and feilong dp other than with siberian blizard? I can stuff normal flame kicks with splash but EX autocorrected one seems to win even knees on top of his head. Cammy dp I never had succes because of how much her hitbox goes down in the dp animation.
You know I’m quite surprised that Juri hasn’t been made a menace to Gief society yet. I really wonder what I’m missing in this MU. I honestly dread playing a good Juri more than a Guile, Honda or even Akuma. Least I can make those matches very competitive. Her buttons are so annoying and they make Gief whiff so much. And it seems you have to do way too much guessing to milk damage out.
Looking online for help, I just can’t find any. Here is this one Gief Window211 vs Infiltration. This is no slouch Gief. He consistently does well vs Tokido’s Akuma. Like he didn’t have a clue here.
