Can someone explain the Chun matchup in depth? I lose to chun about 70 percent of the time I play her unless I am playing a scrub. I can’t turtle she overhead flip kicks. Crouching lariat works rarely against her jump ins. Once she gets a life lead I have to do something stupid or she will just run away and standing hk me when I jump in. I honestly am starting to prefer playing blanka. That is how much I suck at this matchup. I know there is something simple I am missing.
Chun’s jumping approaches are probably her worst thing. You can C.Strong her jump-in punch (the one that hits twice) and lariat her J.Roundhouse.
As for hazanshou (the overhead flip kick) it does a tonne of damage but you can focus it in most cases, and It seems pretty unsafe. I think I may have SPDed her after it on hit.
Edit: and for Guile. Push him into the corner as usual, but when he’s at range pay attention to what he does after he throws the boom. If he jumps towards you then he’s doing your work for you. If he chases the boom on the ground to poke then I sometimes do the following but it depends on the poke he uses.
Block Boom–>Focus poke --> Lvl 1 FA -->Back-Dash.
You could potentially mixup by absorbing the poke and dashing forward to throw him while he tries to block the FA he’s expecting you to do, but I think attack is generally a better idea for starters. Watch out for c.Roundhouse though.
We need to get Chosen_one to update front page with all the match-ups. Too much good information slips thru the cracks.

too lazy to search, but anyone else find out you can punish Chun’s jump back rh on gief’s wakeup? punished it whether it hit or was blocked w/ a quick greenhand/exGH in training mode.
news to me~
edit- looks like they can get away with it at max range. FADC -> jab-spd might work.
also, you can crouching Mk and it goes right under her S.RH and can beat it
trying to beef my vs chun game up >:o
I got beat by Vega’s instant wakeup overhead aka jump back fierce. Gotta keep track of that. I don’t think cr.mk would help me avoid that.
EX green hand on your wakeup.
If Chun does early jump back RH as an overhead, you can SPD/Ultra her for free in her landing frames. Your invincibility goes through the attack, and she retracts it before she lands.
This should only work once on a smart opponent, so ultra her. Because:
If she jumps back and does LATE jump back RH and you Green Handed, You eat a full jump in combo. RH-RH-EX Legs. But then you won’t worry about overheads as much anymore, huh?
THEORY: EX SPD could be okay too, b/c the invincibility may allow her jump RH to pass through you, and it would also counter chun doing low short on your wakeup instead. (That’s a ballsy chun, there)
**
BTW out of all those scenarios, the jump roundhouse damage is the least amount of damage you would take, and moves chun closer to the corner. When all else fails, just BACKDASH **
Wakeup backdash will cause jump overheads to whiff.
Is this ever going to be finished? Where is the Seth matchup?
Not much you can do about that much up so just give up.:nono:
I only fought Seth twice in Championship mode and that was yesterday. I lost both times. There must be something that can be done. Right now he is the hardest for me since I have never won.
<Madden> The Key to this matchup is to hope the other guy messes up really bad. Then you can hit him till he is dizzy. Repeat till his life bar is gone. </Madden>
But sereously, this depends more on how bad the seth is that you are fighting rather than how good your Gief is. I used to think this matchup was in Giefs favor till CE came out. It sounds so obvious when you type it out.
Heres a few tips that I use.
Dodge Sonic Booms
Use moves range moves such as s.HK
KKK Lairat can tag the end of stretchy arms at the right distance, then close the gap
Try to get EX.Ghand him through a boom
If he sucks you can get a Headbutt when he wall jumps
Basicly, try to hit him and watch out for his wake up antics
You only need to hit him like 5 times to end the match so when you go, go big
But really, this is one of those matchups that is completley out of Giefs favor.
Try to find a pattern in what he is doing. If he likes to j. HP, try to time a ppp lariat to knock him out of the sky. Then you can close up and put on the pressure. And try to look for the wall jumps so you can headbutt him. If you get him with 1 headbutt, it usually spells doom for him.
I’m pretty sure ppp lariat flat out loses to Seth’s j. hp. I haven’t played that match in at least a month but I remember getting smacked out of lariat clean even when I predicted the punch.
I know lariat beats Dhalsim’s j. hp but I think Seth’s and Dhalsim’s punches have different properties in this scenario.
Who knows though? Maybe I’m completely wrong or the guy was spacing it perfectly or something.
Im not sure the spacing or the timing since its usually pretty crazy how im trying to chase him down. You CAN knock him out of j.HP with a KKK Lairat. I mean, I usually get hit by 3 or 4 of them before I get the knock down but its totally worth it. In the time it takes for him to hit the ground and get up you can G.Hand to his corpse and be there waiting for him to run some more.
Mabey the timing should be tested in training with a j.hp seth dummy.
I can tag a Seth if I jump a sonic boom out of his attack range and he tries to go for a cr.HP. Do KKK lairat and youll hit him just like Dhalsim.
I tend not to do PPP lairat on Seth because it just gives him more time to hit you with a boom after it or allows him more time to think of how hes going to punish you after its done. If you are gonna lairat him, make it a KKK.
I only use ppp lariat because I thought it gave your more upper body invincibility. If he spaces it out perfectly, he’ll beat you out. But a lot of times, you’ll just trade with him. I have more success doing it from a crouching position as he’ll try to time his j.HP later to hit my head, this allows me to catch his arms more readily with my lariat. Also, if you time it right, you can j.HP his limbs. And there’s nothing wrong with blocking. You’re still pushing him towards the corner. Just be careful of his wall jumps when he is in the corner. Stay under the timer and make him sweat a little. This usually forces them to try something risky or make a mistake.
Yea but I feel you dont need invincibility in this because you are going to get hit by that j.HP and if he doesnt hit you with it. You are left there spinning and open. The KKK will hit and end fast so you can move it trades just as PPP would and has lower invincibility that you want because if you are timing your lairats properly you can go over and through sonic booms and hit his standing range attack cr.HP.
Nothing wrong with mixing up lairat though, a mix of both lairats is always better. But I still think PPP leads to a little but more post-punishment and more recovery time for Gief.
Need Help against skilled Gen
First time i fight a skilled Gen, got owned.
Help!
cr.mp beats seth’s j.hp more times for me than lariats.
You probably just need to fight more Gens man. It’s hard because there aren’t many Gens out there and usually when you fight one, they are pretty decent. My advise is not to lariat. Know his stances and be prepared for what he throw out in each stance. The best way to do that is just to use Gen. At least go through his trials so you know what his moves are. Know what he’s looking for that can combo and do big damage. Most Gen’s are looking for that cr.lk in kkk stance which he can combo his supers into. Then he can follow that up with an ultra or gekiro which = bad time for gief. He can also combo into his ultra or super from a wall jump so know when he’s charging for that. I’m not sure if you can grab him after a blocked wall jump or not. I get it some times, some times, I miss. I guess maybe it’s due to how deep he hits. Also he’s looking to anti air you with his double HK in KKK stance, then can then ultra you or super you. So don’t be predictable with your jumps. Be really good with your pokes. His st.mk is a very good poke and he can link that into hands. Doing wake up mix up on Gen is though if he has meter because he can just ex wall jump out of it. So I was told by this decent Gen I met online that the best way is to just walk him to the corner and put on pressure from there. Wake up lariat might also be safe. I’m not 100% sure on that. Oh, and always be on the lookout for his cross ups. I think it’s j.mk. It comes out insanely fast and it’s hard to tell that it’s going to cross you up.
My current worst match up right now is Fuerte. I keep forgetting that you can’t do cross up mix ups when he has ultra. In fact, you can’t really jump at all near him when he has ultra.
I play Gen on the side, decent, but not great.
YEah, walk him to the corner. Gen has no fireball, so every chance for him to do dmg he has to put himself in harms way. You can safely build meter across screeen if you want with KKK. Waltz to the corner. If he wall dives just c.lariat it. if your distance is right you win clean, if not it trades and you can then nail him with EX GH on fall giving you a very solid life lead. From there he has to become the aggressor. He’ll look for cross-ups which can crack lariat, so you ahve to do a WELL timed c. lariat…moreo ften than not trading which is always in your favor in this match-up.
Don’t jump in on Gen at all. There is NO reason to jump-in unless you scored a knockdown. Just poke him into the corner using the standard Gief pokes. If he does the wall dive over your head and goes straight down, you can reversal SPD, or for simple knockdown, lariat, or to show off FA. Just remember that he has to come to you to do dmg, dont’ jump, and trading is in your favor here.

Thanks guys.
El fuerte is always a 50/50 for me…
Blanka should be decapitated.
