Zangief General Thread: Our Russian Skies Are Protected

Guys I’m pretty sure you can “cancel” armor. =)

This only works on moves that have recovery frames, and what armor seems to do is give you a frame advantage equal to that of the recovery. I pretty much cancel to SPD (usually LP or MP because of range). You need to press (not hold) Gief’s v-skill and use as a parry and then immediately cancel to move of your choice. In the case of SPD it connected each time as long as recovery was 5 frames or more.

When I tested vs Ryu I did it against a link of 3 frame jabs. V-skill armor the first jab and then SPD registered as reversal before next jab could hit. I also tested it against jab then immediate jump. SPD caught RYU before he could jump as he was still in recovery frames for jab.

It will not work against Ryu special combos (i.e. jodan nirengeki and jodan sanrengeki) as they don’t show any recovery frames, but both of those are -7 on block anyway.

Hope this helps. Long live Gief!

Could one of you smart guys tell us where we stand frame advantage wise after each RBG?

Here you go, from my current studies. But the advantage of the SE is to meaty.

Regular SE against no recovery = +73 frames
Regular SE - Dash against no recovery = +48 frames
Regular SE against normal recovery = +25 frames
Regular SE – Dash against normal recovery = 0

EX SE against no recovery = +68 frames
EX SE - Dash against no recovery = +43 frames
EX SE against normal recovery = +20 frames
EX SE – Dash against normal recovery = -5 frames

4:05 mark shows exactly what I mean. It works against anything that has recovery frames. You will see Ken is still in the recovery frames after his punch hits the armor when he is grabbed for SPD. Then again at 5:27

I like the way this guy uses my fav. move (knee hammer) as well.

Wasn’t sure what you were saying when you said “armor”. So you’re saying you can cancel V-skill in to SPD?

Yes. The reason I said armor is because you only get advantage to do SPD after 1 hit of armor (you can get 2hits of armor if the moves are almost simultaneous i.e. 2 hit EX Hadouken so that flex doesn’t come out).

@GreeceMonke

At first I wasn’t sure what you meant. And I thought you had found some kind of special kara cancel with the V-Skill.

But Zangief has always been able to do that, as you’ve seen done by stupendous.

In my earlier findings, you can absorb 2 hits stationary, within 60 frames (1 second) before you automatically release the Flex hit.

But I do acknowledge, that further testing needs to be done. To figure out just how to get out of V-Body faster.

Right now, hoping they fix the input lag, so this move becomes GREAT - and Big Z climbs the ranks. Even getting out of the Iron Body 3 frames faster makes a huge difference. Reduces your reliance on being psychic on the V-Skill release.

Itabashi, kent4ro and hotaru will be attending tokyo button mashers this weekend. Let’s see what happens.
On a side note, snake eyez dropped alex and is back to zangief.

You playing again CARTER! haha.

GIEF 4 LIFE homez =)

?
He actually said hes dropping alex yesterday on his stream. Too lazy to find the twitch archive.

I think that’s because of the pushback that the cr.mp adds. It might mess up with your spacing and you end up whiffing the lariat.

Well, I wasn’t aware. So it was news to me hahaha.

I release Iron Body right after I press it. Since I use as a parry the release is instantaneously for me and then I immediately follow up with SPD. This is how I do it consistently against 3 frame attacks in practice mode. Moving on to human testing next, but the results should be the same.

My next test is for V-trigger. I don’t feel I am using the vortex to its full power. Maybe we can SPD as the vortex starts so when they get in range it grabs automatically. There has to be a way to guarantee to SPDs out of it…

When I get home from work, I am going to try cr.LK on block, cancel to VT, HP SPD during suction to see if it connects. Cuz that is a pretty cool way to activate it.

I’m surprised noone mentioned the combat here. Such an amazing performance by Gief, an constant uphill battle vs gimmicks and balls of steel performance

I love it.

nope you are negative after suction. you will be punished by any smart player.

How negative are you? I can’t find any data on it…

-6, you’re in deep shit if the opponent knows that.

I am sure there are other things we haven’t uncovered with his VT. There just has to be…

@Maverick7 i did on the video thread

It’s bad bro. The only thing ppl have been uncovering are ways to beat it.

Level 1 suction vs block is -6 on activation, -4 afterwards. Unless you confirm the hit and want to link into super, you need to use level 2 to keep it safe. Level 1 suction is an early gimmick at this point.

Thanks for the stats. What is suction like on hit? Where are you all getting this info btw? I can’t find it anywhere online…

Is suction basically a 50/50 when you think about it, because don’t you have to guess that I am not to keep in going for the full VT in order to react in time?
