What is mainstream, or what constitutes a group mainstream?
If a certain group is mainstream, does that mean that all groups that play similar or are labeled as that genre make them mainstream
Does the mainstream label extend to bands from 1990, 1980, 1970, 1960, 1950,…?
most mainstream sucks, but it’s not that cut and dry. Mainstream rock is a million times better than mainstream pop/hiphop/rap (can you even call mainstream rap, rap anymore?)
Conformation taht the beatles where a shitty boy band from 1960. Thank the god’s im not the only one.
Mainstream is not synonymous with bad. That being said, liking something just because it’s mainstream is just as dumb as liking something just because it’s obscure. Good and bad music everywhere, and of course a lot of it depends on personal taste.
I tend to like certain genres in general, like prog rock and IDM, rather than liking “mainstream” stuff or “obscure” stuff.
Ice Cube predicted rap’s downfall a long time ago in the early 90s.
“Pretty soon hip-hop won’t be so nice. No more Ice Cube, just Vanilla Ice.”
Welcome to the Vanilla Ice Zone. est. since 1997.
Music sounds cheap these days. i’m growing scared of most contemporary artists covering classics and others taking old beats to modernize them. I hate gow dubstep and the sub-genres it’s spawned has become some commercial gimmick, like

Most annoying song, ever. If the producer has a concealable daughter, he better conceal her.
The poll question was “What do you think about music TODAY(mainstream)” i was talking about music today.
By mainstream I mean what is “the most popular and well known” music. An example would be Justin Bieber. Everyone is familiar with that name. And for 2) no. Pop is considered a mainstream genre, however some pop artists are not as mainstream (or mainstream at all) than others. Same with metalcore.
When I said mainstream, I meant today’s most well known and generic music.
what exactly are you trying to tell us here? We don’t know nothing about Call Me Maybe. That is true. We know about Call Me Maybe. It is a song by Carle Rae Jepson. Oh and I’m Chinese, not black.
Doesn’t matter what my opinion is because they (big labels that constitute the top 40) clearly aren’t making/marketing shit for me. Case in point:
Amon Tobin at the Royal Oak Music Theater, September 9th! I’ve never see him perform but Bricolage is one my favorite albums of all time and I love to support my favorite artists by seeing their shows when I can.
^That won’t be on the radio ever.
The best songs, regardless of popularity, will stand the test of time.
i think mainstream music is pretty gay, but anything on the radio before 2005 was good (by my standards). 2001 & 2002 were good years for mainstream music, but that’s just my biases.
pdx has shitty radio stations. the hip-hop and r&b station became a rhythmic contemporary, and the rock/metal station got turned into conservative talk show station.
I mean, if I hear a song and like it, I’ll play it on my car or whatever.
But then again, I just recently found out who Justin Bieber is, and I still don’t care.
So… uh… I really don’t know what “mainstream” is.
