Your Opinion on Mainstream Music

It’s filled with autotuned singers/rappers who sound like garbage, have no lyrics topped off with terrible beats. Also, it seems choruses are 90% of a song these days.

if you dont like singing, you might as well only listen to techno and trance

Totally depends on the song.

not notably good music in just about any way, but still an utterly great song.

who said anything about disliking singing? why is it so difficult for you to understand that people can enjoy music without knowing/caring what the lyrics are? you’re missing out on a lot of foreign language music when you insist on being able to sing along to all the music you listen to.

Which is a far gap from saying that lyrics are irrelevant, which is where we started.

Lyrics are a part of songs, and can greatly enhance your enjoyment of the song (although it varies based on the song, naturally). Lyrics aren’t the end-all and be-all, but they shouldn’t be dismissed either.

but techno and trance suck.

i’ll rephrase.
real simple

music with lyrics = song
music without lyrics = still a song

lyrics with music = song
lyrics without music = not a song

that differentiation is what makes it possible for people to ignore lyrics. a song still has musical value even if someone isn’t blabbing all over the track. look at hip hop. it’s commonplace for producers to drop ‘instrumental’ tracks in with the rest of the album, but almost never drop ‘vocal’ tracks. why is that? my take on it is that lyrics give context and set the tone of the song. however, songs don’t always need their context and tone to be set by lyrics- and in that respect, lyrics are a hinder the song.

why add lyrics to this? you’ll ruin the song.

take the guitar out of Alice’s Restaurant and it becomes this.

not saying it’s not great, but it’s not a song. it’s not music. it’s poetry or a spoken word piece (which you can get a Grammy for… still not).

OK first of all, the Prarie Home Companion comparison… I admit being owned :stuck_out_tongue:

Still, let me rephrase too;

Many many songs are designed to have lyrics and to have the lyrics improve them. A day in the Life or something more recent like Vyrisus* (linked below) would be much weaker without the contents of the lyrics.

And that’s my point. You don’t disregard lyrics any more than you disregard guitar or drums. Some songs are designed for no lyrics, and are excellent (I would have gone classical rather than game music myself, but the concept holds). Some songs are much better for their lyrics.

You can like both vocal and non-vocal music. They’re not mutually exclusive tastes.

And there are so many other non-vocal genres/sub-genres besides those.

For example, there is plenty of awesome jazz music–multiple genres’ worth, going all the way back to the earliest days of recorded music–without vocals.

I can only respect the musicians who use their own voice and can sing well. Lyrics are second priority to me because I want music, not a book. Bands are a different story. You need a dedicated crew who can actually play their instruments. I don’t think my criteria is demanding but it’s pretty sad when a lot of “artists” out there can’t follow simple demands.

Classical is a fairly good genre of music.

I’m not a big fan of dubstep. I do like the bubblegum side of pop though. Bubblegum pop has always been strong, this dubstep crap is horrible though. I’m also not a fan of indie music, it’s just underground softrock that’s not even underground. That’s what i think of mainstream music.

Mainstream music is just a really small sample size though, so chances are you’ll hate the 10 songs they play on the radio all the time.

 i wasn’t trying to own you, spoken word stuff win Grammys too. it has aural value, just not musical value like songs do.

i agree. many songs are created to drive lyrics which elevates the work as a whole (almost every rap song ever). however, even though the music doesn’t hold up well when you take the lyrics away, they can still be classified as songs (mostly).

NO I AIN’T NO BITCH
AND NO I AIN’T NO SNITCH
I’M FUCKIN ON THAT BITCH
AND THEN I’LL MAKE HER STRIP
I’M TWERKIN ON THAT BITCH
I’M WORKIN ON THAT BITCH
SHE SUCKIN ON MY DICK
CAUSE I’M A PRETTY BITCH

actually that song isn’t all that great musically, but my opinion is if the lyrics can be discarded, they should be discarded. not every song is timeless lyrically in comparison to its musical accompaniment.

swag

I haven’t turned on the radio in like 2-3 years. So I wouldn’t know what the mainstream is so I guess its what they play on the radio. I mostly look for good ska, punk and some hiphop music on youtube. I was driving my younger sister somewhere and she turned on the radio and put it on a popular pop station. They literally played the same song all the time. Oh and fuck dubstep…

im not saying im right, and you’re wrong i was trying to point out, whats the point of listening to people sing you dont know what their singing about

I already answered this.

I like FF7.

at least 99.8% of it sucks ass.
