Depends on who you use. It’s harder if you use characters with high execution requirements like Magneto, Sentinel, Iron Man, Anakaris, Dhalsim, etc.
For everyone else, it’s not hard at all.

its all preference. I learned MvC2 on a DC pad. But when i started going to tournaments i was forced to learn stick since consoles tournaments hardly existed back in the day, everything was on cabinets.
Stick is easier execution wise IMO, the dexterity required isnt as bad as it is trying to perform infinites and stuff on tiny buttons.
And before you guys think i’m an old fuck…i just turned 24…well maybe i am an old fuck compared to the new guys now… ::sadface :: lol
I can both pad and stick. I do believe what you play depends on the character.
Padding with characters like Sentinel and Storm is difficult as all get out, while using stick is a ton easier.
Padding with someone like Jill makes her dashes and screen control easier, whereas using stick makes her getting in slightly more difficult.
Maybe it’s me but, I just don’t see how Fanatiq rom’s so well with pad, i’ve never seen his Storm’s execution on par though.
This is just my own opinion though.
ROM on a pad? Lord have mercy… and good shit.
One button dash.
Well its a known fact that if you play on pad its best to play the PS2/PS3 version on pad. The 360’s pads are too clunky, which it isnt comfortable even playing the game let alone trying to execute certain combos. The PS pad is more suited for fighting games, as the pad offers the perfect grip to execute combos. Now in MvC2 being the fast-paced game that it is, you wont be able to execute EVERY combo known, but the majority are quite easy. The buttons on the 360 are too small for a fighting game, while the PS buttons are perfect for fighting games due to bigger buttons which keep you consistent with inputs. But you have a 360, so getting a stick and taking some time to practice would be the best choice, late…
ROM on pad is the easiest way, as so many hate Fanatiq because they feel he has it too easy in executing combos. But like you state there are characters for the pad and characters for the stick. MSP is perfect for pad, while Santhrax is perfect for stick. It depends on which characters you use, I would say that in general Capcom characters are better suited for pad since most of them dont have airdash, tridash etc. While most Marvel characters are suited for stick because they mainly have those properties which are easier to execute on stick. I play on pad and stick as well, its conditional sometimes you like the rapid pace of the pad and sometimes the more methodical pace of the stick.
It goes both ways, pad is preferred by some players due to the ease of executing, while others like the ease of execution on stick. I personally use both stick and pad. But recently Ive been using the pad for training mode, and stick for execution of those combos in training mode. Everyone has a different approach, many can rape with a pad, but then get raped on stick and vice versa. Its like a car seat, has to be to your liking.
Nah, dont give up on playing on stick as performing combos on stick has a certain enjoyment to it. In 2003 I first started playing MvC2 casualy, but only played on stick at the arcades. I had the game on PS2 and played on pad, but I didnt want to rely on that because I enjoyed the stick as well. I took the stick seriously and started playing more competively at the arcades and I noticed my execution was on point, my MSP became very impressive to many opponents and friends. They would tell me it was like you woke up one day bam…youre scraping with MSP now. I would get people who I rarely played eager to play me due to watching my MSP. Its very easy to get the stick downpat, just think of it as a bigger keyboard, how many words can you type in a minute lol…
DC pad and ps2 pads aren’t too bad, I used to play on both for a while and learned a lot of advanced combos on them before going to stick. since mvc2 has 4 attack buttons it’s also not too bad as the assists on the shoulder won’t see the same rate of use as the attacks. I think playing on a stick is at the least more ergonomic it seems. more room to move. and if you play less combo heavy on pad, even better. there are also those madcatz DC pads with the 6 buttons on face that pad players like. also not all PS pads are the same…some swear by specific kinds and also there seems to be a recommendation of “breaking it in”.
I still try it but my game is MvC3 and since I can use a pad at tournaments and am better with it, I just stick with it. I play Dante usually and I can do his bnbs fine so I dont usually “waste” time and practice them on a stick.
To each his own, I tend to think MvC3 is more suited for pad players. But there is nothing wrong in having the skills on stick as well, for future fighting games that will be coming soon. Dante has a lot of moves, moves that may be better executed on pad due to the barrage of inputs you have to perfect, performing them on stick may be a challenge to some. It wouldnt be wasting time though practicing Dante’s moves on stick, get the whole experience from all possible angles and you’ll appreciate the pad and stick more. But keep up the good work…
MVC3 is a diffrent story. I don’t even use stick on MVC3 because of how easy it is to play on pad. I can even do combos better on pad than on stick. I know it’s a preference, but I’m glad Capcom got their shit together and made it easier for pad players to play.
pad or stick doesn’t matter.
mvc2 is hella hard either way.
besides, team/assist creation is what’s truly hard. without using top 4 tier characters. or top 6-8.
what team…
what assist should i pick…
without relying on top chara…
oh to hell with it all.
I think the big difference in pad and stick is pretty much feeling. Like some folks feel comfortable with a d-pad and while others feel comfortable with analog. I use to play MvC2 on a pad and I was pretty decent, I could ROM, etc but I couldn’t do a damn fast-fly to save my life so I switched to a stick. I’ve found out that I can do inputs a lot faster on a stick than a pad with just a flick of my wrist, like I said before it’s about the feeling.
I didn’t know Fanatiq used a OBD, I know Cable Guy did and he used a stick. Smh.
MVC3 was definitely easy as hell to get into with a pad. Playing Marvel 2, though, took some tweaking because of the double button presses and shit. The way I have it configured now, I can’t really switch out to my A2.
