also, for teching throws, try the crouch tech option select. if you hold down and hit jab and short, you will throw out a short which will usually beat tick throw attempts and if they try throwing you it will tech the throw for you. its not something you should use all the time but if youre getting pressured its an easy option to cover most scenarios.

Yeah Chun Pai he’s talking about gaps in the string where it’s not a true link. A block string may not neccessarily be the same as a combo string and vice versa because there isn’t a cut and dry formula for the most part when it comes to the plus (or minus) frames in either situation. So even if they time their string which would have been a combo if they are hitting you doesn’t neccessarily mean there won’t be gaps in it.
But probably he is intentionally leaving gaps for you to try to jab out of it and since he probably has an advantage on block whatever next attack he does will beat out yours because he has a frame advantage. So he’s trying to bait you into pushing a button to get a counter attack which will give him a combo opportunity most likely. So how do you beat it? Traditionally by DPing however there are a few other options such as option select into throw like Jerry said above. This is one of the better options because he is trying to bait you into attacking but if he’s sticking out a normal in range, throws beat normals as long as you are close enough to their characters hitbox. The other option of course is backdash because of the invincibility, or focus 1 hit into backdash as well. Each option is situational and because the way the game is there generally isn’t one right answer but those are your options. You can random ultra too =P
If you block a jumpin 95% you are gonna block low afterwards. Almost never will you be attacking after that unless it’s a non-reaction DP or a throw attempt.
So what can you do? Use the invul options above or just block, wait for a good tech, and get into a neutral situation again. You have to really start to understand footsies if you want to get better at any SF game… and NO… footsies isn’t just walking back and forth at full screen, it’s more or less getting people to attack and whiff and punishing their whiffs which when you get into high level is what a lot of the game is about. Seriously when you get through the regular BS that’s what it really comes down to which might be a totally wrong impression of the game than what you might have right now where you are just trying to get to an intermediate level of the game already knowing combos, spacing, and zoning as well as the focus attack systems.
If you want to see a match HEAVY on footsies check out vangief vs justin and you’ll see how much vangief gets justin to whiff and punishes it. That is where you are gonna get a lot of your damage in a real match… not just “oh well i think NOWs a good time to jump in” But obviously there are other ways to presure with mixing up throws and normals etc. Just watch how simple most ryu players play to get an understanding of his game is with mixing up cr. mk, cr. jab, throw, and overhead after each knockdown or throw.
