For what is basically a local except a few people you may as well make everything 5 bucks, I’d rather have more people playing than fewer people playing for more money
Also Marvel should be 3 out of 5 for everything and 4/7 for finals, it’s not like it will take much longer
I would go to your tournaments regardless but if you lowered the price and I actually came (lol) I would include myself in more games. Definitely. So even if you didn’t have many people show up anyway (which would be incredibly surprising) you’d have a greater chance of them spending just as much if not more money on more games. Maybe other less popular games would become a bit more popular and exciting too? I think it’s a fantastic idea.

you guys should start playing ssf4 online in ranked matches…
im serious. once you break like 3000 pp you mostly just play top players. i only have 2100 and ive played a abunch of dmg ppl, and like shine, viscant and henry cen lol
I know you can’t tell because you play Viper ^.^ , but there is input delay online, meaning if you have to do links you can’t time them and online in general is just a joke for SF and Marvel.
We should play a real game together sometime Devin, Smash Bros Melee.
Eating vanilla pudding, drinking blue kool-aid, and playing Melee was more fun than playing Marvel has been for months or maybe ever has been except maybe the few days after release
When I first bought SSF4, I played online pretty heavily, got up to 2300 at one point, then stopped playing online completely as I was encountering nothing but terrible, lag-abusing whores that obviously cared only about their precious points as opposed to learning how to play the game properly. Maybe it’s a PSN thing, but online SSF4 was a fun experience at first (learning characters’ shenanigans), but quickly devolved into a frustrating experience as lag tactics became more and more prevalent once I started leveling up.
When I’m playing MvC3 online, I feel like I’m playing Quake CTF on a 56k that was more of a 28.8 back in '97. I really can’t get into it. Haven’t tried AE yet.
This is on both PSN and XBL. So I’m pretty much SOL unless some people want to start getting together more regularly, because I do want to learn more.

well at this point in time honestly I feel like online is the way to get better at ssf4. I know theres lag abusive shit but I guess it really depends on who you play against and what character you play against. like you know your not gonna punish a whiffed ken LP srk online, but you know you can offline, so dont fuck with it. and if their abusing it and you keep getting hit by it its your own fault for not being able to adjust properly. you get too many chances in this game to only lose to one certain thing. theres a difference between a little delay and game breaking lag. I usually just dashboard it if the lag is unbearable, like it takes a minute to go through 10 seconds in the game, but most of the time its whatever. I think xbl is also a lot better than psn connection wise, and remember I have the game on both systems lol. you definitely get what you pay for. a lot of notable ppl who started on psn switched to xbl later.
people arent gonna respect you online either since its a one game type deal so yes they are looking to press buttons on wakeup, yes they are looking to mash through poorly timed blockstrings, and yes they are looking for their ultra. once you understand that and learn how to deal with it, and learn how to not get salty when you lose to bullshit, then your good to go. online if anything teaches you no fear.
also how many top players nowadays started by playing online? krone, vangief, pr rog and practically all of DMG, marcus, the list goes on and on. especially living where we live how else are we gonna seriously level up? this game is all matchup experience and developing small parts of you game at a time I think only cali and NY area can breed top players without playing online, and even then its kinda rare, because different cities tend to play a different metagame and have simillar playstyles. its kinda not even logical for players in a small city like ours to get to top player level and not play online, thats a LOT of traveling and time devotion which most adults dont have, especially here in the midwest where good comp is at least 2 hours away.
Im definitely NOT saying skip offline gatherings to play online though. pleease dont think im saying that lol.im still gonna try to travel as much as i can but im just sayin
also viper combos are not easy to hit online lol. I adjust and can hit pretty much everything except sjc fadcs most of the time and sjc ultra on p1 side lol. but I know i cant hit them a lot more consistently offline so I just adjust my game kinda. if I get in a situation where I need the sjc fadc ultra to win a round ill still try it tho. I think im not the type to hit combos based off muscle memory I usually hit combos based off visual clues and looking at hitstun, so its hard for me to hit combos at first but I can hit them pretty well once I understand how it looks. thats how I can execute kinda godlike online
mvc3 online is different as its even worse delay wise and also because that game is more about combos and hitting your combos consistantly. no one plays that game anyway lol.
also Alex im certain you dont want me in melee.
^
I"m Certain you don’t want me in MVC2

I dont agree with the online part. Yes it can help u level up but u can only get to a certain point. Like alex stated the online lag tactics and lag period limits u. Ppl mash/random shit online cuz they know they can get away with it. Ppl who dont play that way are just gonna get frustrated. I do think online is only good to see different styles of gameplay with all of the characters. 95% of ppl play the characters the same as the pros do but some ppl have their own twists to it. Thats the part that online helps cuz then itll help u adjust to those certain situations better. Thats the only advantage online has. The con to playing online is if u mash/random, when u play irl u cant react correctly. Say u r that type of person, i can just press a bunch of buttons to either bait u to me or make u do that random move cuz u think u hear me inputting a command. Thats where offline play is most important. It lets u adjust to seeing whats happening on the screen as to just guessing or listening to buttons pushed cuz u cant react quick enough to the point where ur just to random and dont know what ur gonna do next and hope that random move hits
played some casuals at gameworks yesterday. they had the cabs upstairs on fre play still after thetournament. marcus was there and was pissed that organous won at tracks again. apparently not many showed up for that gameworks tournament.the arcade version of ssf4 feels like it runs a little faster than the console ones. not that different, cause i could hit the crouch lp - stand fp link, but faster somhow.pocari sweat is gross
I liked your post for this quote. I’ve noticed this from you as well. I’ve seen you hit harder combos when we play online than when we play at Jerry’s. I feel that I rely on muscle memory and rhythm when it comes to combos. I’ve always wanted to pick your brains on how you and some of the other regulars go about training yourselves. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure Jerry’s musical background comes into play, and Dan is just a computer with human skin draped over it. Munney? Andrew? lol, Shin Wolverine?

Wisconsin and Illinois share the same problem. You can’t learn fucking matchups. Only matchups you can learn are Gief and U2 Gief. And that’s still saying we don’t have a good poking Gief. But even with more characters as I’m sure we have, those people don’t know their character well enough yet or if they do then they basically aren’t telling us certain things nor are we asking certain things to get answers and evolve this game. The problem with online for me isn’t the whole lag issue. It’s the 'Why did that shit work." 9/10 times I can PM them and ask them why so and so worked and I’ll get a response kind of like ‘LOL NOOB U SUK THTS Y’

You can hella level up on your own without others in training mode. Learn more OS and get better reactions. Look up frame data and see what can punish things and stuff. Practice stuffing moves on reaction and seeing what beats what. That’s what I’ve been doing with my little time with AE.
Devin I seriously wanna play your AE Viper soon. Get your ass over here.
LOL the only time shin wolverine has done a combo ever was when he threw an ex fireball.
Pocari Sweat is fucking awesome. I bet Carlos loves that shit too, fucking weaboo. It’s because he knows the way that they make it is they get a room full of Japanese women to run on treadmills all day and then collect and bottle that shit and rename it “POCARI”
Jerry, thistotally reminded me of that pic of young TomatoPancake.
pocari sweat is a god tier drink, that and calpico calpis. Enjoy your mt. dew though.
The tracks was a blast, FG and bars mix like…playing fighting games at a bar. Just wish more people could have stayed for more casuals after. I actually don’t feel like marvel is as random as people think it is, if it is then top players wouldn’t be so consistent in their placing in marvel. And at the tracks even, I thought we were organized in the placings pretty nicely according to our skill level-Keranata>dan>sammy>me.
Overall I’m glad I saw an improvement. My first FG tourney was at the last tracks, going 0-2. After that tourneys I went I got 1-2, 1-2, 3-2, and 2-2 again losing to Dan and Alex. But I’m not the person to ever be content with mediocrity.
… regardless, leveling up really takes a long time doesn’t it, guys? T-T
those guys kept interrogating me in the car like a bunch of bros who’s never set foot in Milwaukee before. YOU GONNA SMOKE A FAT BLUNT IN THE HOOD?? CAN WE COME?? you should’ve just dropped them off with me and have them learn a thing or two.
those ramune drinks with the glass ball are awesome, and we bought a bunch of 2 liter oolong and green teas too. pocari was just uck.
I rely primarily on muscle memory to execute combos. The only time I’ll use visual/audio clues is if the timing on a move is really, really strict… which doesn’t come up very often as I normally don’t use insane-execution-level characters.
EDIT: After further thought, I do rely on audio/visual clues for hit confirms, but not for actual combos. Also, I’m picking up AE today (I wanted the disc, not the DLC) so I’ll be messing around with Rog and Fei. Haven’t touched a fighting game since Jerry’s.
I don’t know how to quote posts, but in regards to Carlos posting about the relation between guitar and fgs . . .
I’ve noticed that after a Tuesday night session that, if I play guitar after I get home, my playing is more percise. It’s as if I was warming up on guitar already. So I believe some of that hand coordination carries over. Jerry plays very intricate, complex guitar lines. I’m sure this mindset helps him with mastering complex, intricate fg techniques. You can learn combos from following button rhythms. This is how we would pick up techniques in the arcade. You’d listen for the button presses, and then repeat that rhythm, perhaps on an empty cab, so as not to waste your tokens(old school). It was always interesting to hear someone from a different area come in to the arcade and do the same combo, but with a different button rhythm (if it was a combo with leiniency). Everyone local had basically the same rhythm.
However, fgs also are dependent on reading/training the reactions of the opposing player. This is why live competition is so important. Combos are not the heart of fighting games. They are the icing on the cake. The heart is understanding your opponents strategy, or mindset at any given moment, and pulling the trick out of your bag that will beat that strategy. If your default strategy beats theirs, you will see them as a scrub. If their default beats yours, you know you’ve got some strategizing to do. It’s when you find someone of your approximate level that the game gets really fun.
Most fun I’ve had recently was playing the Black Rose at Marvel in an extended set, and playing Munn3y’s Rog(even though he beats me 9 out of 10, I can still pull maybe one of three rounds, or get him down to 10% -30% health pretty consistent). I know I need to work on late round patience. The asian persuasion has been handing it to me late as of late (munny and 3S guy last week, sorry I don’t remember the name). Devin’s Sagat is too good for my Rose right now, I want another shot at Jerry’s Cody. Syxx, Keranata, and Jerry are all out of my league in Marvel 3. Carlos and Price might be in striking distance in Marvel. I can’t beat Organeous . . . yet, but if he’d play me a little more . . . I might be able to take his yomi and eat it for breakfast.
I hereby challenge anyone to a first to 15 tonight for $5 in Super AE. Only one person. First to reply. I used to blow $5 in MK3 like three times a week at least. Man I was so good . . . my mitichlorians was off the charts and my yomi was flowin like the nile. You could see my chi from Chitown.
Oh yeah, links, I think, are muscle memory. Juggles, or combos with long breaks=visual/audio clues, for me.
Of course, it all becomes muscle memory if you do it enough.
Dammit, why can’t I post twice in one minute . . .
