I know there have been a million of these threads, but I’ve put a lot of thought into this an have concluded that I’m really just too inexperienced to decide this for myself.

I’ve only been playing SF4 for a little over a month (I played 3s, so I’m not entirely unfamiliar with fighting games, I also followed the SF4 scene pretty closely despite not actually playing it), and decided on picking Cammy as my main/first character to learn. I’ve spent a great deal of time in training mode and recently started playing on xbl for matchup experience, but basically my question is this:

Relatively speaking, my execution is still piss poor, and I’m playing a character that’s fairly execution reliant (Cammy pretty much sucks if you can’t reliably do tkcs in matches, from my understanding). I don’t care about losing, but I’ve been considering whether it would be more worthwhile to temporarily learn a different character in order to gain more familiarity with the game in general. I’m just considering that perhaps I could be learning more if I were playing a character that wasn’t so reliant on execution because I could focus on actual strategy and mindgames as opposed to being heldback by lack of execution.

The only potential disadvantages of this that I can think of would be:

  1. If I intend to have a different character as my main, I wouldn’t be getting that matchup experience while I am still learning (although I’m not sure how valuable that matchup experience would even be if I’m not playing ideally because I know my execution won’t allow for it)

  2. Whether or not the time it would take to learn another character would be compensated for thereafter.

I just want to become competent at this game as quickly as possible, especially since I am already very far behind.

Any thoughts or opinions?

It never hurts to pick up Ryu for a little while to understand how zoning and footsies work in this game before you go back to the offensively oriented character that is Cammy.

As far as excecution goes Ryu has all of the basic combos, links and cancels that game has to offer which will definitely carry over nicely to other characters. I think Ryu is actually a pretty good way to start training for Cammy, possibly even Ken because Cammy and Ken play similarly but Ryu will teach you parts of the game that Ken might not.

As far as feeling like you’re actually progressing, it can be hard to tell sometimes. Everytime I think I have something down, I end up failing it multiple times in an actual match. Sometimes it’s simple links, sometimes it’s setups or traps, but all the time I have a hard time not blaming it on online.

im kind of thinking the same way maybe if i choose ryu it would help me with gen and ibuki and akuma. except i cant stand playing ryu so i been looking at cody, he seems like a good character for learning somethings. i dont know i remember cody being a really tough character to learn in alpha 3 but he seems not as tough character to learn as in alpha.

If you pick a character stay with them you aint going to accomplish anything by picking someone then just moving to someone else when the going gets tough. If you like a character you got to take the time to learn them and it could take some times so you gota be sure your in for the long haul.

I don’t know… I think asking the question “What character is going to help me understand the game engine and mechanics of Street Fighter 4’s unique attributes, so I can learn the game then learn how to play someone more suited to my style” is a great question. It’s a question I would think would have an answer of Ryu but I think that’s actually a really good question for newer players.

Yes, that was exactly my question. And to respond to the person above, my reason for considering temporarily switching to a different character to become more fluent with the game isn’t just because “the going has gotten tough”. I don’t care about losing, I care about learning - I’m just wondering whether or not picking up a different character would be more conducive to learning, or if the time required to learn them would not be compensated for, and I would be better off just spending more time practicing execution.
