I get a strong feeling that most the folks that mention games like Superman 64 and Shaq Fu never actually played those games. I mean, hey, I know they are bad games - they’re the first games to come to your mind - but I never played them. Because I knew better.
So, I’m only gonna mention the games that I actually played.
Quest 64. Ya wanna know why I got an N64? Because I loved SNES. Ya wanna know why I loved SNES? FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, BOF1, BOF2, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia, and even more if you include emulation and DeJap translations. I got an N64 because Nintendo Power was showing off beautiful screens of upcoming N64 games like Final Fantasy VII, a remake of Final Fantasy VI using SD character models, and Mother 3.
Did we get any of that? Nope. We got this abortion. Now, maybe the game wasn’t as bad as I remember it, but I don’t remember feeling any sort of soul or charm behind this game - it felt extremely by-the-numbers, the environments were boring, and the amount of nothing in the game felt tremendous.
Deus Ex: Invisible War is another game that was just as much a blend of disappointment and bad game as Quest 64. You have any idea how much I loved the original Deus Ex? How much I STILL love it? It can’t be measured. I played that game so many damn times, and a lot of that had to do with how much depth there was behind it. That was the biggest reason we loved it. Then DX2 comes along and strips ALL the depth away. All guns use the same ammo. All the leveling mechanics are done away with. For fucks sake, HEADSHOTS don’t even kill anymore - or even do much more damage than a foot shot! I was infuriated. I played maybe 30 minutes of it before I was just too disgusted to continue.
Justice League: Task Force is a game that shows just how rough it is to be a DC fan and a video game fan. The game was fucking ugly, had a pathetically small cast, and most moves were 1-frame. Seriously though, I’d probably have been able to tolerate it if the game weren’t so damn ugly - it was vomit inducing. Disappointing and just plain bad.
Primal Rage for the SNES was another great disappointment that was just plain bad. Granted, maybe the original arcade game was bad too (I can’t remember the arcade game because I haven’t played it since I was a kid), but I loved the arcade game as a kid. Giant dinosaurs clawing and biting the shit out of each other in between bouts of human volleyball - what wasn’t to love? Yet they somehow managed to fuck this up completely.
Rise of the Robots on the SNES was one of the first games I payed for with my own money. Robots in a fighting game, what isn’t to love, right? Well, just about everything, unfortunately. If you wanna know why this game is awful, just watch a YouTube video, I don’t want to relive the experience myself - I just know that 1P had to play as the main character, and the fighting itself felt clunky and just not-fun as hell.
I used to be a cheevos hunter. SAW is the game that stopped that. I played through a LOT of awful, awful games, but that is the one that I just could not muster through any longer. Just terrible. Granted, I didn’t even like the movies, so maybe I’m not the best judge… but I don’t even like wrestling and I 100%'ed Legends of Wrestlemania, so I think I’m still able to judge this. Not even my custom Mike Haggar could have taken me through that game.
X-Blades is a game I had little expectations for. When I got it brand-new from Toys R Us for $7, I knew it wasn’t going to be great. I did at least expect some mindless hack 'n slash that would keep me entertained for a little while, though. Nope. It failed to meet even those low expectations. Dropped it in less than two hours.
Lost Planet 2 is a game that I picked up because co-op. My roommate and I love playing through co-op games. Resistance, Unreal Tournament III, Saints Row III, the Gauntlet series, Beat ‘Em Ups of any sort and I’m sure tons more have gotten significant co-op play from us. This was the first game we couldn’t stand to play through. Even with Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes’ God awful slow-down during it’s co-op on the PS2, we still played the hell out of that game. This game was just not entertaining. Dark Void was yet another recent Capcom effort that I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on - shit glitched out as soon as I put it in my system, and even after it got worked out, I felt like it was better when I wasn’t able to play it.
The “So Bad They’re Good” games - games I objectively know are bad but I still enjoy playing: Battle Monsters (Saturn), Street Fighter: The Movie (Saturn), Voltage Fighters: Gowkaiser (Neo Geo), Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mario Is Missing (I powered through this game with a friend of mine in one night while I was in elementary school. Brings back good memories. And mammaries. His older sister was one of the first girls to make me feel funny. In my pants.) Power Rangers (Genesis and Game Gear). Maybe some folks would say the same about my beloved Sengoku Basara series, but hey … fuck you.
Side Arms, Dungeon Explorer, Devil’s Crush, Alien Crush and Bomberman '93 would all like a word with you.
