Worst Video Game you've ever played, shit we wished we could forget

Predator for the Atari ST.

Nobody mentioned Independence Day which is really shocking to me.

So why is it bad game? I remember I chose this game over Virtual On for the Sega Saturn, and it was one of the worst decisions I’ve ever made. This-game-is-impossible! Seriously, graphics are so bad everything just pops out of nowhere giving you no time to react to anything that’s on the screen. The machine guns never hit anything, EVER! Why are they there? Would you waste your time going after some more missiles which seem to run out pretty quick? Oh that’s right, you don’t have a lot of time to goof around because the alien ship is about to fuck everything up even if you destroy the generators or defend something you can’t even see! Where are the power ups/recovery items? Oh they’re just hidden in areas where crashing your plane is inevitable, because you know, some game designer thought that by putting them so close between mountain terrains ideally made sense when you’re low on health and about to die. This is one of the worst air fighter simulations I’ve ever played.

I get a strong feeling that most the folks that mention games like Superman 64 and Shaq Fu never actually played those games. I mean, hey, I know they are bad games - they’re the first games to come to your mind - but I never played them. Because I knew better.

So, I’m only gonna mention the games that I actually played.

Quest 64. Ya wanna know why I got an N64? Because I loved SNES. Ya wanna know why I loved SNES? FF4, FF6, Chrono Trigger, BOF1, BOF2, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG, Illusion of Gaia, and even more if you include emulation and DeJap translations. I got an N64 because Nintendo Power was showing off beautiful screens of upcoming N64 games like Final Fantasy VII, a remake of Final Fantasy VI using SD character models, and Mother 3.

Did we get any of that? Nope. We got this abortion. Now, maybe the game wasn’t as bad as I remember it, but I don’t remember feeling any sort of soul or charm behind this game - it felt extremely by-the-numbers, the environments were boring, and the amount of nothing in the game felt tremendous.

Deus Ex: Invisible War is another game that was just as much a blend of disappointment and bad game as Quest 64. You have any idea how much I loved the original Deus Ex? How much I STILL love it? It can’t be measured. I played that game so many damn times, and a lot of that had to do with how much depth there was behind it. That was the biggest reason we loved it. Then DX2 comes along and strips ALL the depth away. All guns use the same ammo. All the leveling mechanics are done away with. For fucks sake, HEADSHOTS don’t even kill anymore - or even do much more damage than a foot shot! I was infuriated. I played maybe 30 minutes of it before I was just too disgusted to continue.

Justice League: Task Force is a game that shows just how rough it is to be a DC fan and a video game fan. The game was fucking ugly, had a pathetically small cast, and most moves were 1-frame. Seriously though, I’d probably have been able to tolerate it if the game weren’t so damn ugly - it was vomit inducing. Disappointing and just plain bad.

Primal Rage for the SNES was another great disappointment that was just plain bad. Granted, maybe the original arcade game was bad too (I can’t remember the arcade game because I haven’t played it since I was a kid), but I loved the arcade game as a kid. Giant dinosaurs clawing and biting the shit out of each other in between bouts of human volleyball - what wasn’t to love? Yet they somehow managed to fuck this up completely.

Rise of the Robots on the SNES was one of the first games I payed for with my own money. Robots in a fighting game, what isn’t to love, right? Well, just about everything, unfortunately. If you wanna know why this game is awful, just watch a YouTube video, I don’t want to relive the experience myself - I just know that 1P had to play as the main character, and the fighting itself felt clunky and just not-fun as hell.

I used to be a cheevos hunter. SAW is the game that stopped that. I played through a LOT of awful, awful games, but that is the one that I just could not muster through any longer. Just terrible. Granted, I didn’t even like the movies, so maybe I’m not the best judge… but I don’t even like wrestling and I 100%'ed Legends of Wrestlemania, so I think I’m still able to judge this. Not even my custom Mike Haggar could have taken me through that game.

X-Blades is a game I had little expectations for. When I got it brand-new from Toys R Us for $7, I knew it wasn’t going to be great. I did at least expect some mindless hack 'n slash that would keep me entertained for a little while, though. Nope. It failed to meet even those low expectations. Dropped it in less than two hours.

Lost Planet 2 is a game that I picked up because co-op. My roommate and I love playing through co-op games. Resistance, Unreal Tournament III, Saints Row III, the Gauntlet series, Beat ‘Em Ups of any sort and I’m sure tons more have gotten significant co-op play from us. This was the first game we couldn’t stand to play through. Even with Sengoku Basara 2: Heroes’ God awful slow-down during it’s co-op on the PS2, we still played the hell out of that game. This game was just not entertaining. Dark Void was yet another recent Capcom effort that I’m glad I didn’t spend any money on - shit glitched out as soon as I put it in my system, and even after it got worked out, I felt like it was better when I wasn’t able to play it.

The “So Bad They’re Good” games - games I objectively know are bad but I still enjoy playing: Battle Monsters (Saturn), Street Fighter: The Movie (Saturn), Voltage Fighters: Gowkaiser (Neo Geo), Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Mario Is Missing (I powered through this game with a friend of mine in one night while I was in elementary school. Brings back good memories. And mammaries. His older sister was one of the first girls to make me feel funny. In my pants.) Power Rangers (Genesis and Game Gear). Maybe some folks would say the same about my beloved Sengoku Basara series, but hey … fuck you.

Side Arms, Dungeon Explorer, Devil’s Crush, Alien Crush and Bomberman '93 would all like a word with you.

Any Tiger portable games. I remember I bought the Mortal Kombat made by Tiger. I’m not really sure there was any difference between any of the characters, and you could only occupy 3 different spacial positions. Those were full screen, mid screen, or a neutral jump at full screen.

i disagree with ff12. i thought it was pretty good. the gambit system took time to really grasp and truly exploit to its fullest potential…and the graphics were unequalled for that system.
i never played any ff game before that one, so i’m not judging it in comparison to the rest of the series.
that said, the espers were 1000% completely useless, the story was way rushed and hacked up in the end, and that great crystal that you had to explore was truly a prison sentence. i didn’t get lost during the completion of the story, but after beating the story and having completed the mission hunts…there was just 2 boss level monsters to beat…the one in the crystal and the other in the island, you know which ones, the one hit party death ko’s ones.
anywho, i made the mistake of looking for that boss monster thats in the great crystal and i got waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay lost. like,…“i’m stuck here forever n ever” type lost.
i had to stop playing it coz of my ass being hopelessly lost.
put the game down for 4 years straight.
but a couple months ago i decided to try to figure my way out…and i did, but i got bored and dropped the game.

Word, the TG-16 was, for the most part, a shitty system to own. It did have some gems though, some of them that dude listed up above. The two games I played the most on my TG (most of the time the handheld) were Devils Crush and Alien Crush. It was better as a handheld imo.

E.T.

/thread.

I played Superman 64 bfore it was notorious. Rented that shit from Blockbuster and was just appalled. So mad, it was back when i got to rent one thing a week. Had to wait a whole nother week to get somethin else. Least I didn’t buy that shit, those purchases where even farther apart back in the day.

I rented this game because it had the name street fighter in it but it was fucking shit

Footage of “Vs.” Zero Divide will follow later.

Scribblenauts.

The worst part is that it had a ton of potential, and it was hyped to all hell.

But then the game was a horrible glitchfest with terrible controls and got boring after half an hour. ;-;

Saw that Banjo-Kazooie, No More Heroes, and Earthbound were listed.

You people don’t have any respect for gaming.

I’m fucking done with this planet.

Reading through this thread is invoking memories. Some games that people named I had completely somehow wiped from my memory that I had even touched for a hot second before it all came back to me. Hold on a sec I need to get myself out of the corner…

Worst Games I’ve played:

WCW Mayhem - Consider the following…From the time I’ve started playing games during the NES days to current I can actually count the number of games I’ve traded or given away. I generally don’t trade in anything and keep a game even if it’s a disappointment if there was SOMETHING in the game that I felt in someway was redeemable. This was the first game I traded in. While playing through the ‘golden age’ of wrestling games I really wanted to like this game after enjoying the greats of WCW vs. NWO World Tour and WCW/NWO Revenge I wanted another good WCW game. I tried to put at least a good few hours into the game to be sure of my disappointment and came to the conclusion that this game was gutter trash. At least WWF Warzone and Attitude I could actually go back and play for unintended hilarity (heat seeking drop kicks from the top rope? HELL YEAH!)

Sonic 2006 - Enough has probably been said on this game. Someone has already posted the video. I’m one of the biggest sonic fans on this site. You couldn’t pay me to take a copy of this game.

Sonic & the Black Knight - This game is lucky the story wasn’t bad and the music was awesome. A not so bad idea that was horribly flubbed and marred by dumb ass waggle controls. Playing through this game was a chore and was almost 2006 tier…it didn’t have nearly as many glitches.

Shadow the Hedgehog - Angsty hedgehog gets vehicles and a gun? WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!? lol Probably mentioned enough in this thread. Horrible camera angles and some nice idea here and there that was implemented horribly. The Good and Bad alignment at times felt quite moot and the targeting system in this game made it difficult to not shoot the enemies you were gunning for especially when they were huddled around the people you were supposed to be allied with. BANG! SHIT…i just shot that officer! Maybe I should be a b- nope…I just shot that alien that was attacking him…oh well! Then on top of that regardless of whether you were good or bad neither side really seemed to give a shit and attacked you anyway. Then add into the fact that giving a character an all powerful move the decimates just about everything within a mile radius isn’t exactly good to have when you’re trying to not kill a certain side. I could go on and on…lemme just stop here.

MK Mythologies: Sub Zero - I’m sad to say that I halfway actually enjoyed this game but that doesn’t excuse it from being bad. I’m sure when they put the idea for the gameplay down on paper it sounded fine…allll the way up until the game actually got released.

Batman Forever - People bringing up this game in this thread reminded me that I had actually attempted to play this over my cousin’s house…I didn’t know what the fuck I was supposed to do until several years later. How in the hell was I supposed to find that hole in the ceiling with the grapling hook!? Combat is a different story…wasn’t this the same thing like MK Myth: Sub? quickly rechecks…yeah…but looking at it now I think that might actually be a disservice to MK Myth… And what the fuck? ‘Hold On’? wow…i completely forgot about those load times for each room lmao.

Dragon Ball Z: Sagas - Another game that I’ve traded in. You’ve probably heard me rant about this game before so I’m not going to go to far into it. God man…soo much potential…wasted. Shit just makes me more annoyed the more I think about it…

Edit:

I was trying to think of that other horrible game that I played and I suddenly remembered it

It was some Trasformers fighting game that was on the N64 and it was based on Beast Wars. I think you could only rent it from blockbuster or something? I had fun for a hot second screwing around in that game but then it got old really fast. I think I just played Rat Trap and drove around completely pissing off my friends in the process lol.

Yeah, I played it day one and remember getting pissed off at it but being too young to really realise why I hated it, the fact it’s notorious now doesn’t surprise me.

Also @ the poster who said a lot of the people bitching about Shaq etc. probably haven’t played them, unfortunately I grew up in the 16 bit era, so I’ve played a lot of shit that was worse than any of the shovelware these days, the early crap on the PSone/SNES was churned out by people that just had no fucking clue how to make games and it was so much worse than anything kids these days are complaining about.

On the subject of worst games of all time that I’ve actually played, ET on the Atari, that shit was on a whole different level of bad.

I’ll get flamed, but I really dug the concept of BioFreaks on ps1. Its clunky as hell, but flavor wise It felt unique (for the time)
Between the trapped stages and insta-kill attacks, you could die at any moment, not just after "FINISH HIM!"
Also, playing Purge and using his flamethrowers gave me joy. I dig fire… a lot.
And beating the final boss made you feel like you honestly did something, as that fucker was one hell of an “OH SHIT” moment.
Had to use Minatek and spam the missle battery on his ass to bring him down.

When I was a kid I remember borrowing Terminator 2 for the SNES from a friend and thinking that it was a good game.
I was a stupid, stupid child.

lol No More Hero’s, Earthbound, Megaman Battle Network? keep it classy guys.

Funny story, I’m a huge Sonic fan as well. It’s easily my favorite franchise ever, period. So maybe I’m the only one, but I actually loved this game when I was a kid and I still play it to this day (which also may be because Shadow is my favorite character from the franchise, right next to Metal Sonic). Yes, it’s clunky. Yes, the voice acting is terrible. Yes, the forced angst could have been played off better. But I play Sonic games for the factor of their nostalgia, which is probably why I loved Generations so much and praise it to be one of the best Sonic games ever, right next to Sonic 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.

Just imagine though, if they actually made a fairly gritty Shadow game that was action-packed and at least semi-violent. Wouldn’t that be fucking godly?

Why, just the other day I was actually thinking about how fucking sweet it would be if they made a Metal Sonic spinoff that played like God of War or DMC. It would have a serious tone, balls-out graphics, and it would have sick as fuck cinematic action along with a bad-ass metal soundtrack. (And no, nothing by Crush 40, please.) Man, it gets my balls wet just thinking about it.

Yeah, that’s the Menacer, alright. Three attachments, and ALL of them sucked. The fucker also required 6 AAA batteries, and them shits only lasted for an hour or two at most. It was kinda accurate, but you had to be like…8-10 feet from the TV to get it to work at all, and you had to put this weird contrapion on your TV to get it to work, and the fucker would fall off with a slight breeze. That shit deserved to flop.

I was going to mention Criticom as being another piece of shit, but after watching that video of Vs., I’ll just be glad that I didn’t play that.
