Worst Video Game Cliches

it’s like they have never heard of a evil character that utilizes misdirection and deceit.

BlazBlue.

I see your Blazblue and I raise you UmiNekoblahblahblahwhateveritscalled!

Welcome to the japanese standard of calling your attacks

the loli(s).

The wrestling and action movie fan in me never had a problem with that.

one example would be the tales series

DEMON FANG, DOUBLE DEMON FANG, RISING FALCON, BEAST, SWORD RAIN ALPHA, SWORD RAIN BETA, DEMONIC TIGER BLADE, TEMPEST THRUST, etc

when you chain them oh gawd…

I fucking hate little kids in video games, that aren’t part of the background. This gets really bad in japanese RPG’s where you get a 7 year old girl joining your party. I’m trying to save the world, and some kid cries until she joins my party? FUCK YOU. Saving the world is serious business, I should stab this little shit like the rest of the cannon fodder, and hope I level up.

Biggest cliche, hmmm
Try this: pack all the hay you can and jump into it and tell me how it feels.

No imagine jumping from buildings into a little haystack filled with pidgeon shit

Yo, this is my gripe with the Tales series. Everyone looks like they aren’t even old enough to buy a game from GameStop. Get these kids out of my damn game. Hell even if they’re adults, they have that HUGE chibi head. Doesn’t help seeing some kid beat down highly trained warriors with years of battle experience. You know what’s even worst? BLAZBLUE. Jin is one of the best soldiers in the military! WHAT. He must weigh like 70lbs!

not sure if this has been established, but I hate Western games where you take the role of an abonormally swole white male in his late 30’s/early 40’s who has to kill aliens and ethnic minorities

Biggest? That’s only in one series of games.

Character watches a loved one die, holding her in his arms on the floor, guy yells and they zoom out. Yeah we know we know

Also fun: Main villain has some absurdly over-the-top scheme to rule the world (or the universe!) that has an at least 50% chance to also destroy the world, and a 70% chance of killing the guy trying to do it whether it works or not.

Good planning there bro

I can’t believe I forgot this one, because it’s definitely a pet peeve of mine.

That Sam Fisher one was never used, sadly. Which I think made no sense as you’d expect him to be all grizzled up after what had happened to him.

And I hate it when the story is to stop the bad guy from getting whatever power he’s trying to get/stopping the bad guy from releasing some ancient beast/stopping the bad guy from reviving some other bad guy. I hate this, because no matter what we do, THEY’RE GONNA DO IT ANYWAY, and we’re gonna have to fight the super powered bad guy/ancient beast/revived bad guy.

That ties in with mine, the first thing the super bad revived guy does is to kill the bad guy that revived him.

When I was in college I wrote an essay on stereotypes and archtypes in video games.

I always hate that asians always know martial arts (or are fucking nerdy perverts), and black dudes are always ghetto thugs, even on other planets and fantasy worlds. And white dudes are always in charge.

That goes way beyond video games. But, so do most of these cliches.

Creepily, even in other places. Like you’d expect that some, that people think of someone from their own culture as the main hero, but a really really high proportion of the games (and pop culture in general) coming out of asia also have white, or at least blonde main characters.
