Worst fighting game system?(or engine, if you prefer)Why that one?

I was watching the <a href=“http://www.twitch.tv/eightysixed”>Salty Cupcakes</a> stream(Skullgirls tourney every Thursday @ 7PM-whenever they decide it’s time to turn in, typically 'round 2-3AM), when I heard Mike Z say something interesting about Persona 4 Arena, namely that it was the worst fighting game system he’s ever got his hands on. He never went into a lot of details, but he seemed to be reserving a truck load of beef about it, including stuff like the 2 button Shoryus(e.g. Yu’s Big Gamble). What, to you guys, strike you as candidate for the worst you ever played, and why?(in that same stream, one of the Stream Monsters named SFA3 as one of the worst, Garou, from another). <div><br></div><div>For me, although I do bear in mind it’s an alpha, and thus not representative of the final product, Fighting is Magic felt like the least fluid of any fighting game I’ve ever played, and would definitely benefit from a helping of QA TLC, should anything ever come of what they have left after HASBRO brought down the legal banhammer</div>

Any game with chain normals, which can be cancelled into special moves, together with launchers, which leads to >20 sec combos (hello skullgirls).<br>

This is easy: anything made by Namco

Do you guys even know what a game “engine” is? What the heck does 2 button Shoryus or chain normals have to do with a game engine?<br><br>A game engine involves rendering engine (“renderer”) for 2D or 3D graphics, a physics engine or collision detection (and collision response), sound, scripting, animation, artificial intelligence, networking, streaming, memory management, threading, localization support, and a scene graph. It doesn’t involve individual gameplay design elements like controls or combo systems.<br><br><br>

<font face=“Arial, Verdana” size=“2”><span style=“line-height: normal;”>This is what Mike referred to it as, so that’s why I went with what I did. Hmm, true enough. I shall modify the original title to reflect this

With all the absolute junk released for consoles in the 90’s, pretty much anything released in the last 10 years would easily be out of the running for “worst ever” anything. I’m thinking of stuff like Justice League Task Force which doesn’t have blockstun, making every single normal punishable on block, or those Super Famicom anime fighters where hitstun frames have no hitboxes so attacks that would combo just whiff instead. I think it’s pretty safe to say that no Persona, Tekken or even Mortal Kombat comes close to that kind of nonsense.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (or basically all of the Tekken games).<br>I simply don’t like juggle combos. <br><br>I’m fine with Soul Calibur though. <br>

Street Fighter The Movie The Game (Arcade).

KOFXII has the shitties gameplay to ever appear on the face of this earth.<br>

Marvel vs Capcom 3. Both vanilla and ultimate. No comment is needed, it’s already been stated why a million times(Tvc2). Mvc2 is the last actual vs gameplay of the series.<br><br>oh and anything capcom made in 2008 and up. Is simply doo doo. dont owned any of their new titles neither.<br>

Persona 4 Arena is not even close to being the worst fighter nor is it even as bad as the haters claim to believe it is. Two button anti airs is a very illegitimate reason to call a game’s mechanic bad or stupid since there are probably other games that fall under the same category of one/two button counters or something even dumber. Plus, it’s a totally different game mechanic that people traditionally are unfamiliar with. That should not make it a candidate for a bad fighter. I play P4A and treat it as a game of it’s own, just like every single fighter should be played. It’s dumb when the total opposite is done. Most if not all fighters are not as bad a people exaggerate them to be. They obviously haven’t played games like Kasumi Ninja, Bikini Karate Fighters, Shaq Fu, Pit fighter, Shadow War of Succession, Tattoo Assassins, etc. They would come crawling back to this gen’s fighters that are oh so hated for these so called “worst mechanics ever” rather than calling them games they JUST DONT LIKE. <br><br>I don’t like SFXT, but i’d rather play that game for the rest of my life rather then gouge my eyes out and commit suicide playing any of the games I listed above.<br><br>I will probably have to watch the recorded stream to hear the rest of Mike Z’s reasons. But anyways… <br><br>Worst fighting game system? Most crappy western fighter made in the 90’s. No fluid mechanics, very bland gameplay, lack of flexible metagame, and probably very questionable content. <br>

Heh, nobody is really talking about engines just the gameplay.<div><span style=“line-height: 1.7em;”>Mugen isn’t anything like the engines used to make fighters it’s just one big cluster fuck.</span></div><div><span style=“line-height: 1.7em;”>SNK is bad about leaving a lot of glitch graphics in the over scan.</span></div><div><span style=“line-height: 1.7em;”>Capcom is bad about using a lot of pointers to pointers to pointers to pointers to pointers that go to more pointers.</span></div>

Oh noes. God forbid that a licensed fighter based on an RPG series actually tries to make concessions for fans of said RPG to get them to play the game, even though they’d never think about touching fighters in the first place. Even if it includes countless elements from games that their greater fighting game fanbase loved and adored.<div><br></div><div>R-Actions are cast from hit points, can’t be One More Cancelled, can almost never be used to start a combo, and are incredibly punishable. There. Done. Case closed. I can’t believe people still think this is an issue.</div><blockquote class=“Quote”>

Come on man, I even used bad grammar to make the joke clearer, no need to get defensive.
