Working on Strange guide. Ask me questions about Doctor Strange so I can expand my thoughts

You mentioned somewhere on the forums that Strange/Strider is a solid duo. Could you elaborate on what makes it effective?

If you’re clever, and I mean really really clever, you can combo off Strider assists easy. If you have a yellow grace out and you’re close to it, a connected Strider knockdown is a free combo.

Where this becomes amazing is when you combine this with SoV. If you do the spell while calling Strider, you get a knockdown after the super, and can OTG with a yellow grace from full screen, teleport H and fall with a combo. Full combos off SoV is incredible, and if you can focus on proactively deploying yellows and staying near them, you are a huge threat.

Hi,
I was advised to pick up either Strange,Doom, or Sentinel for a horizontal assist for my team. I chose Strange.
I use Jill-point(arrow kick),Storm-2nd-(Whirlwind),Strange-anchor(Bolts). My question is how strong of an anchor do you feel Strange is and I find some of his BnB combos timing really finicky, do you have any suggestions?
THX

I think you should pick up all three of them and make a team of it.

Bolts isn’t exactly a conventional horizontal assist, since it can only hit (most) standing opponents. It’s really best with box dash characters like Nova.

You really should go with Sentinel on that team. Jill and Storm get so much out of Drones assist. Bolts just doesn’t do it for them.

But all you really need to know about anchor strange is that Impact Palm -> Flames -> Impact Palm always combos for free. Just keep doing it, it’s an infinite. He can work as an anchor but it kinda sucks if you never get a game going, so make sure you got a good read on you opening SoV -> X-Factor so you can kill a character and set up your stuff.

how does strange beat contain vergil 1v1. or is this impossible? i dont play that much but when i do, i generally always play against a cheater that plays xxx/doom/vergil. both character may or may not have xfc. vergil being more likely to have it.

bronson.

I’m kinda new to the whole Dr. Strange scene, but I’ve found that I mostly kill Vergils with things like random/on-reaction SoVs x-factored into combos. If you have X-factor, 7 rings can also be used to try and punish his teleport-ins if he has swords up (X-factor in case it doesn’t correct for his facing) or his round-harvest throws.

If you don’t have X-factor, then I’m not really sure, as Vergil is Vergil and swords+teleport rapes strange’s ranged game.

It’s in a matchup like this where graces and flames become a necessity. Eye of Agamotto will be punished on reaction with a Stinger. You’ll get more milage out of yellow graces.

Your best bet is to whiff punish things with SoV, and use the time after it to set up a special move or two. You can use Seven Rings to counter Spiral Swords, but usually this will just give Vergil a chance to mix you up after the recovery unless they do something stupid and get hit. SoV will not beat a Spiral Swords activation, and Astral Magic won’t either.

Don’t teleport if Vergil’s standing still, easy punish, even if you use the H version. If you expect them to move then go with a teleport H and fall with an H or S (depending on the range) and play from there. Don’t use Mystic Sword M up close, Vergil range too strong. your best bet is to go for frame traps up close, and cancel a palm to teleport H for potential frame advantage, then fall with an air throw OS.

The worst position to be in is high above Vergil where you are forced to land and take a mixup. If you get in that position, you can try to use flight to delay your descent, and if you have graces out, use a flame to make yourself a little safer. You can teleport down if you think they’re going to try to air throw you as you fall.

Also if Vergil super jumps, that’s probably the best time to throw an Eye of Agamotto out. From there you got time to set up your game. That being said, Vergil isn’t going to super jump. You can try to use that to your advantage.

Also learn to plink dash. Also learn to dash cancel your Illusion. If you can catch any long range Vergil normal with an Illusion, you can probably punish it, even if you don’t dash cancel, since any Illusion’d move will count as a whiff. So if you got a good read, go for that. Keep in mind though that if they hyper cancel, you’ll get bodied unless you do dash cancel the Illusion so you can block.

this sounds super theory, how does strange even get time to set up orbs multiple times. at best i get 1-2 sets going. and when are you guys punishing vergil for whiffing?! no good vergil is going to blatantly whiff normals and do unprotected roundtrips.

thanks for the help though.

hahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I never said it was a good matchup, but those are your options. You might even get some mileage out of L Daggers just to keep a grounded Vergil at bay for a little.

Fact is everything Strange does is punishable. Strange with a proper assist can handle Vergil just fine, and Strange with X-Factor has a lot more options as well. But in an ST mode match, Vergil will beat Strange unless you play to get lucky.

I’m using Strange + Plasma Beam. Plasma Beam hits from behind so Vergil will get hit if he teleport. Other than that you can pray for getting a impact palm or grab. Also I think using 7 rings to counter swords is only viable if you have meter to DHC out. All Vergil’s normals beats Strange’s and Vergil’s H nullifies flames of the faltine lv 1. Stinger punishes everything Strange does. Vergil is stupid. Even Shady K knows that!
What I like to do is super jump at any opening on and put yellow grace + flames + teleport. It’s a “safe” teleport for creating blockstring pressure, but you need to have an assist to make you safe and continue creating pressure. Also sometimes when I pushblock I may wrongly hit a c.H. Maybe if I could convert…

I actually found strange to be one of the few character that does well against vergil

assists?

You should be bodying frauds like Shady K. Plus why are you leaving anchor Vergil alive anyway? I snap him in and kill him everytime. Treat him like Phoenix with no incoming options

I don’t know what Vergil’s you’re fighting bro

So after months of practice still no luck with FoF loops. How do I land these?

It’s just about spacing. You have to hit the palm far and low enough away so that by firing the FoF it hits late, so you get more frame advantage on hit. Look up some videos because it’s hard to explain without a visual representation. You just can’t be directly next to your opponent for that combo to work.

I watched the vids still not much luck. But I’ll keep grinding it and see what happens. Your explanation makes sense so hopefully I can correct what I’m doing wrong.

Is it true that missiles is the best assist for strange?

I’d say Arthur Gold Daggers is his best assist, and if you’re good with Arthur then you can implement that. Other than that, I’d say Unibeam

Missiles are hella good but I wouldn’t say it’s his best. Strange really needs a strong horizontal assist that fires at a decent speed. Anything else that can help control space and give Strange time to set up spells is also very useful. But ideally, your assists need to be able to cover the recovery of Strange’s unsafe moves, and buy time to cast high startup specials. Missiles do a lot for Strange, but not everything he needs.
