That’s just the general mechanics of the game. When you land from an empty jump, there are 2 frames where the only action you can take is to block or tech a throw. When you land from a jumping attack, there are 2 frames where you are completely vulnerable, followed by 2 frames where you can only block or tech a throw. In either case, if you input an attack during those 2 frames that you can only block or tech a throw, you will become unable to block or tech throws, and the attack is buffered and comes out after the 2 frames. This is why that reversal hits you. In that situation, you’re vulnerable for 2 frames before your dp even comes out, and a 4f reversal is fast enough to hit you on those 2 frames. I believe a reversal needs to be 7 frames or longer startup to be option selected, but I might be a bit off there. Could be 6 or 8…I don’t remember.
Dannkk’s explanation is basically correct. Essentially when you land from a jump attack, you can only block (and tech) before you can do anything. If you press anything during the jump recovery, you forfeit your right to block, and your attack will be buffered to come out asap.
To solve this problem, if you do your OS slightly later, you should be able to block the 4-5 frame reversal, while still OSing backdash and slower reversals. The timing is a bit tight though. You can see this here with Bison, but the concept is the same.

Also I have discovered that certain characters can crouch the fwd throw -> st.mp -> nj mk. The nj mk will just whiff.
Thats the information I needed, I was unaware of that. I tought E.R. wasnt blocking simply because the sweep have started, so I was wondering why the sweep was comming out but the shoryuken wasnt. The sweep never came out afterall, now I see it. Thank you guys.
Demon setups? Kara F + MP, Kara Far St. HK (on wakeup or after a few Light attacks on block), whiffed F + MK, whiffed Dive Kick, others?
I land lots of demons. I’ve found resets are good during the normal bnb. As long as they’re not mashing and you don’t do it to them to often, you can just start your bnb, and then kara demon after the mk axe kick or c.mp/c.lp. If you do the bnb but end with hk tatsu, then jump, immediate dive kick, it’ll whiff and you land right behind them for a demon setup if they quick rise. Against a ton of people you can just get them to block a c.lp and then do f+mk kara demon. They’ll just be hitting crouch tech and you hop right over and demon them for it.
There’s also that situation where people land in front of you. They’re scared of fireballs and your dp, so they do an empty jump or a long range jump attack that whiffs and they land in front of you. Kara demon them as soon as they land. I watch for this really hard when I get super. It basically works every time until someone specifically baits it. Even then…they usually bait it by jumping back, and you recover in time to dp them. rofl
Best way to land it tho, is more advanced. You want to use the f+mk kara demon to go over low attacks. Like if you’re fighting normal Ryu and he blocks your jump in, go to c.mp, then walk back to his c.mk range and do the kara demon. He’ll c.mk cuz it’s the only button that can hit you at that range, but you just hop right over it. Same thing while you’re dancing around crouch techs. Walk back just out of range of their c.lk and then demon.
Don’t forget your dirty tic-demons. C.mp+c.lp x3 > f+lk+hp on blocking opponents. When timed correctly they are pretty much hosed, even if they attempt to jump (it will snatch them from their pre-jump frames).
I use this from time to time with Akuma, though with E.Ryu I find myself packing a full Super meter in round 2 and 3 much more than I ever do with Akuma. The fact that E.Ryu’s yields a little more damage (370 I believe) makes this very useful on opponents with solid defence or perhaps a little too respectful of eating one of E.Ryu’s nasty frame trap confirms.
You can’t actually demon pre-jump frames (or 2 frames after the opponent leaves blockstun), but tick setups are nonetheless still useful.
Is this project on indefinite hiatus? Seems like it might be a good time to consider an update in light of recent Sako-related events!
Hello guys its been a while since i play ssf4 now I’m back just to play E. ryu and juri
firts thank you all people that’s share this knowledge’s
but i have 2 Q.
1: you recommend using more defensive or aggressive
due the fact he has low stamina
2 why i cant see any video from the links you post!?
Thanks in advance and i hope contribute with something soon or if i can help testing something just let me know
Evil Ryu is a solid character, he is meant to be played solidly. Most of his mix-ups aren’t hard to deal with. They work quite well against opponents that aren’t aware about them. As soon as they learn the matchup, you will start to have to earn your victories. You need to have really good fundamentals to play him, its not an Ibuki/fuerte/viper kind of character.
E.Ryu can sweep "Balrog,Guy,Viper,Dhalsim,Adon,Cammy,Rose,Gief, & Deejay.
Delay the Tatsu on "Gief,Viper,Adon, & Guy after A St.Fierce.
I stopped playing as much and kinda dropped him before I dropped the game altogether. If anyone is willing I can give someone the template to create another post and have this one deleted.
Hi, first post here though i read e.ryu topic since 1 year. This topic is really helpful, i think most of basic informations are here. But the problem is that we dont know where to find the information we need with all these spoils. Hope somebody can make a visual update.
I dont see in this topic that you can do an empty jump after a sweep.
PS: sorry for my bad english, not my native language.
what about the tut tho
I never get it (in all threads in srk) why not make any comment above the Spoiler block?
It’s so annoying to go over them all one by one for every piece
Dear e.ryu players, I think that this thread should be redone in some way. There are greats basic informations here but they are too much spread to be clear. Same for the match up thread, i dont get any match up data from it cause you cant read it claerly.
I said that as a newbie e.ryu player, they are great info like unblockables but at my level we need basics: how to open people’s defense up with simple okizeme like the ambiguous jump-in after a f.throw or the ex axe kick backdash setup. And unluckily these informations are not here in the guide. I know the fact that most players here got these simple actions like known, but it is not the case for everybody.
I’m willing to give anyone who wants to finish it the template so they can start a new one and continuously update it. I took a hiatus for a while to study so I wasn’t able to update it.
Sure, I’d be willing to make a new thread. Although with ultra coming, a lot of the information will probably get outdated quickly- like knockdown setups for example.

Yes i agree with this, i feel like i should stop trying to learn all of these set-ups off of knockdown since the game is evolving quite drastically. It would be nice to avoid getting wake-up DP’d everytime its my turn to apply offense though
