SFIV had pad warriors at a high level of competition but they mostly stuck to certain characters where the pad was not such an issue. The real limitation of a pad is on the buttons not the directional inputs, and certain characters in SFIV relied heavy on button techniques which made them impractical to play on a pad.
So far SFV doesn’t have any tricks that make me feel like I’m gimping myself for being stuck on pad, but there’s always the possibility that somebody will find some nonsense tech that requires you to play Guitar Hero on a row of Sanwa buttons.
Considering the current state of the game, which characters are more apt to play on a pad (especifically a DS3)? I want to main Dictator and Karin but I’m not sure if those two can be used to their full potential on a pad.
As of right now, absolutely everyone is playable on pad without feeling gimped or having issues at all. With the 3 frames input buffer, removal of mash specials and Supers becoming 2xQCF ( K or P instead of KKK PPP ), nothing in the game feel hard to do on pad.
Anything with kkk or ppp is easy even on pad with the hori 4 since it has 2 trigger buttons on both sides while still having the 6 buttons on the front. Lets you assign both ppp and kkk to the right side so you don’t have to do that clunky motion where you are using your left thumb operating the pad while having to press a left trigger using that same hand.
When I started Street Fighter with pad: “These inputs and combos are impossible!”
*When I started Street Fighter with stick: “These inputs and combos are impossible!”
Then later:
“I can’t believe how someone can use a stick in SF…”
“I can’t believe how someone can use a pad in SF…”
You get used to both. And in SFV, they are as equal as ever.
I can vouch for the Hori Fighting Commander. That thing is so legit and I highly recommend it for pad players who want to have more customization when it comes to button config as well as piano inputs.
I have ordered them at a local Gamestore which listed them with a feb 16 release, the official mad catz store states that all pre-orders will ship in February so it should be correct. I have a TE2 so if it will be here later that wouldn’t be a problem.
I still stick by stick being better than pad, just not enough for it to hugely matter if both players are of similar skill level. There are just some things I still feel are better suited for stick execution wise.
Ideally hitbox is better than everything. It basically allows you to piano motions without needing to hit diagonals. So much so to the point where it was considered to be way too advantageous in Tekken and theoretically makes certain executions way too easy when perfected.
Watch me be the first one to pull up to Evo and start busting people’s asses with one of these. 3P on my brake pedal, 3k on the gas, and hands on 10 and 2.
They’ve been equal for a long, long time now. Show me someone who can’t make quick, minute accurate motions on a pad, and I’ll show you someone who’s never beaten any Contra game in his life.
The problem with the pad isn’t really the motions, its the buttons. Not that anything is impossible on a pad but playing Honda or any “hands” in 4 is waaay easier on stick. Since all of these inputs are gone this time I see no advantage of one over the other.
Yeah I’m very confused, I hate the Fighting Commanders. The pad is awful and hurts my thumb quickly. It’s much more difficult to control and just doesn’t feel good in my hands at all
