Incoming long post (if I’ve left anything out feel free to correct me)
Well going into the purchase of a Wii one of the first things you’re going to have to get over is the fact that its not as powerful as the 360/ps3 nor will most of the games look as good. The system only goes up to 480 and doesn’t touch 720 or 1080 so on certain monitors games will look reeeally bad from what I’ve heard. There also isn’t a standard achievements system set in place for Wii so if that’s something you fancy then you’ll be disappointed. It’s hard being a Wii only owner…especially for the past year. That being said though I enjoy my Wii myself and it still has a good selection of games to play…the problem is sifting through the plethora of crap that comes out on the system (if you’ve ever walked into a store that sold games and looked at the wall for Wii…it’s a travesty). Something else to consider is that most of the good titles that show up on this system won’t show up suddenly with better features and upgraded on either the 360/PS3…at least it hasn’t happened yet sense the system has been out.
It’s really all going to depend on what type of games you’re into:
The wii has been pretty light to crappy in the RPG department but there are a few…Fire Emblem (strategy), Phantom Brave (Strat…if you like disgaea you may want to look into this), Muramasa: The Demon Blade (action), and Rune Factory: Frontier. If you’ve played Tales of Symphonia for the Cube the sequal came out on the Wii but I’ve heard it wasn’t all that great…perhaps someone can confirm? Owners have Arc Rise Fantasia, Tales of Graces, Fragile, Monster Hunter 3, and FFCC: Chrystal Bearers to look forward too.
Fighters are on the system are good so long as you are given options in the control scheme… GG: Accent Core, Brawl (STFU…we’re not going into that), Samurai Showdown Anthology, Naruto CON series as well as plenty of virtual console fighters if that suits your fancy. You can play most the virtual console fighters with a stick so long as it has Gamecube support I believe…I don’t think they’ve made an arcade still that will just work off of the wii mote or sync to the wii itself. Most people are looking forward to Tatsunoku vs. Capcom (Frank West FTW!) and the new Naruto CON game will have online and looks pretty good.
For shooters you have The Conduit, COD: World at War, Medal of Honor Heroes 2. Personally for me if given the choice between dual analog and Wii mote controls I think the Wii mote controls are far better. Games in this department to look forward too are Red Steel 2 and The Grinder.
For platforming you have Super Mario Galaxy (people have said it’s the best platformer ever), Wario Land: Shake It and Super Paper Mario (RPGish). Games to look forward too in this department are New Super Mario Bros., A Boy and His Blob, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.
For Adventure titles you have LOZ: Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Okami, Zack and Wiki (believe this would go here). Things to look forward too in this department will be Metroid: Other M.
Wii has been pretty light on good racing titles and if they’re good they’re more arcadey in nature. Mario Kart Wii and Excitebotsare what I’d reccommend currently. Need for Speed: Nitro will be out and that looks pretty good but it’s still arcadey. Wii is lacking in any good ‘serious’ racers.
Rail shooters seem to be something of a specialty on Wii. House of the Dead: Overkill, Dead Space Extraction and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles are good. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles will be out later this year and looks quite good.
Not many action titles on Wii but what it has is pretty unique. MadWorld and No More Heroes are recommended. No More Heroes 2 and Red Steel 2 (considering you’re slashing and shooting are practically equal…I think this would have be mentioned here as well) next year will be 2 good.
Sports has been pretty good on Wii but not outstandingly so save for a few cases, for the most part if you have one of the other systems you’ll probably play it on one of the other systems. Experiences like Tiger Woods 2010 and Grand Slam Tennis you won’t get from the other systems. If you’re planning to only own a wii then for hockey get NHL 2k10, Madden for football, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 for Soccer, and Wii Sports Resort for bowling and general (also allows you to pick up a Wii Motion Plus). There hasn’t been any basketball games that are good yet…though I find the couple of games on Resort to be fun.
Survival Horror has you looking at RE4: Wii edition but Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is shaping up to be pretty good. Ju-on The grudge looks somewhat good surprisingly but from an article I read it’s going to be a haunted house simulator.
If you’re planning on getting Wii Fit and want some other games for the Balance board…Skate It and Shaun White’s Snowboarding. The sequal to Shaun White will be out later this year.
Music games are good on this system if you’re into that. Guitar Hero 5 has the same features as it’s 360/ps3 brethren plus a couple more. Plus the Guitars work off of the Wii Mote so if you happen to have gotten some of the rechargable battery packs for them then you won’t have to worry about batteries unlikee the versions on the other systems.
There’s other games to play as well that I didn’t mention…one of them definitely being Punch-Out!!. There’s a list of titles and what not on the front page of this thread. Don’t forget there’s also the Wii Ware titles as well as GC titles that you can go back and play that you may have missed out on since the Wii is also 100% BC with GC and the back log of Virtual Console titles.
Perhaps I should include some type of Wii FAQ section on the front page?
