Why were console only characters allowed?

And yet a Japanese player won the whole damn tourney.
Still, I don’t see why Capcom doesn’t just patch the arcade version with an implementation of the console characters. Its been quite long enough IMO. I’m sure I am not alone in thinking this.

Here’s why your argument sucks.

I don’t know about the characters from those other games because I don’t play them, but Gill isn’t allowed in SF3 because that fucker is too strong. Even without regeneration he’s a beast.

Just because EVO is a console tournament that doesn’t mean they aren’t willing to ban characters. The reason why console characters were allowed is because all the data leading up to EVO suggested that none of the console only characters were too powerful. If say 3+ Seths placed in the top 8 or someone pulled out some previously unknown broken shit with Gouken then that would have to have been examined after the tournament, but all signs previously suggested that the console only characters weren’t game breakers.

ST Akuma.

Capcom really messed up by not updating arcades. The console characters feel weak, but still feel like they had enough effort put into them that they were somehow intended for arcade play as well, except maybe Seth. I don’t like the idea of taking the Akuma formula to the extreme and making a character with every single tool but weak as heck.

is there anyway they could add console characters to the already existing arcade machines?

edit: and this is daigo vs philly one using cammy at evo

Not many arcade units in America, I was lucky there were two SFIV arcade machines within 20 miles of my place. Evo is a console tournament so they used the console version. I think it is the best to use SFIV in its entirety anyways.

I’m sure they could add console chars to arcade but they’re too lazy. They’re probably saving the console characters for SF4 Dash when they can act like they actually did something, but really they’ll just add the console characters.

Of the console characters, I think that only Cammy and Seth are worth mentioning. They’re the only chars that you have to learn the matchup to fight the characters.

About SC4: First off, there was no arcade version of it to begin with (Fuck you Namco). Secondly, bonus characters were banned because they were basically copies of some of the the “regular” characters with very minor differences.

Also, no I wouldn’t care if any console characters turned out to be really solid. You’re almost making it sound as if S-tier = inherently bad.

SFIV seems designed with this situation in mind, all the console characters are designed not to upset the arcade tiers, most aren’t tournament viable and those that are, are low/mid-tier, except Seth.

Wrong. The reason is because arcade owners would have to buy the new version and that’s a logistics problem.

HDR is an entire game of console only characters.

Console characters are just characters, characters like Gill aren’t banned because they’re console characters, they’re banned because they’re hidden broken boss characters. This isn’t really a hard concept. Any console character could be too powerful, but so could any arcade character.

Akuma is banned in super turbo, and he’s not a console character.

Characters are legal unless there is a reason to ban them. Give a very good reason to ban the console characters, convince people in charge of tournaments and they will be banned. It’s not hard.

So, just to play devil’s advocate, what about the console-only versions of Ryu and Iori in CvS2? The EX characters in GGXXAC+? As far as I know, there was never any proof that they were so good as to be ban-worthy.

that was covered in my post. Those games had strong roots in the arcades for their competitive scenes. So the vast majority of the players wanted the consoles to mimic the arcade as close as possible. Hence the banning of evil ryu, and orochi iori.
SF4 is different because it does not have a strong arcade root in the USA. If japan were holding console tournaments then they’d have a strong case (similar to 3s and CvS2) to ban console only characters to make it as close to the arcade as possible. But USA is not japan and we do some things differently.

I think the only answer is cos at the moment the game appears to be wel balanced and no characters added for the console release are overpowered. This explains the disparity between allowing them in SF4 but not in any other game they play at Evo.

Because banning them would cater to 2 out of the 1040 players that paid to play.

Akuma was banned in HDR at EVO this year.

Evo is a console tournament.
