Trick being, ‘should’ makes absolutely no difference at all. Why beat yourself up over something you simply can’t effect or change?
That’s a big part of the appeal of competitive video games. It’s pretty weird to me that being physically incapable of competing would make someone MORE interested in a competition.
I find it funny that this topic has degraded into semantics of the word “Esports”.
It’s hardwired in us to want to compete and be superior
Was done better in the ‘future of fighting games’ thread.
When we look at top athletes in the world, we are not just marveling at their abilities - but the years (and in some cases, decades) of dedication that it required them to achieve that status. For me, the latter is actually the bigger appeal factor than former. Being a former runner on and off since high school, and having turned to strength sports and BJJ within the past two years, I have a lot of appreciation for the top level athletes I see on videos and read about on magazines - because they are epitomes of dedication. And a lot of times, it’s not even about winning or losing to me (which may sound weird but it’s true); I genuinely have tremendous respect for every runner that qualifies to run the marathon in Olympics, every fighter that worked up the career ladder to step inside the UFC octagon, every man that climbs the main stage at Mr. Olympia and every player that managed to suit up to sit on the sidelines of a NFL game.
I can’t hardly say the same about competitive video gaming. There are arguably certain exceptions, like Daigo Umehara, that have literally dedicated their lives to playing video games. But even then, the mental fortitude and the strict lifestyle dedication required to become a successful athlete cannot even be compared to becoming a successful video game player. Yes, people often talk about ‘training’ in video games. But I see absolutely nothing mentally or physically strenuous in sitting in front of a monitor for 4 hours per day and pressing buttons. Many of you probably already do that without second thought. But if I tell many of you here to even jog a mile within 8 minutes, I assume most of you will consider as tremendously painful ordeal.
He’s the offspring of Kal-El and Spock.
It would be weird for him not to be.
Superman is not logical, merely unswerving in his beliefs.
That kinda just sounds like you appreciate athletics because you DO participate, which was my point. I give respect to all those people just the same but it’s off-putting to me when a type of competition favors certain genetic traits I just don’t have and can’t get.
And even if I was some talented runner, I think I’d still find watching the Olympic marathon pretty boring.
Jokes don’t have to be accurate everytime to be funny man.
This. That would undeniably be awesome.
I’ll admit esports is a word if we start calling real sports physicalgames.
Tis’ only fair broheims.
Videogames aren’t sports. Period.
Poker isn’t a sport either, it’s a game.
It isn’t a sport unless it involves physical duress and/or fullbody physical training.
Esports is just a fucking madeup word in order to attribute hype/money to it.
This means that the word will become reality in the future. We just all have to know that is isn’t the truth, and our children can’t take it as the truth.
Think of Esports as a godhead of the trinity of Scientology/Mormonism/Jehova’s Witnesses of videogames. The people that believe in it are entitled to their opinion. But no one wants to hang out with them, and they will never have a a significant hold of the populace. They will have influence, but not total control.
Similarly, the NBA lockout fucked with the season, but did it change the game itself? No. As long as we have the games, everything will be fine.
Hell, even if it got a stranglehold on Evo, there could still be other tournaments as a counter movement, nothing is permanent.
I am certain that all of those sad souls who lack high level manual reactions to visual stimuli, and pro poker capacity to make reads, plus the ability to pull ass off of craigslist, feel the exact same way about Viscant.
Superman is neither Spock nor McCoy; he is radically both.
His greatest struggle is his obligation to be Kirk.
ha yeah. I can’t say video games completely divorce competition from innate physical advantages but it sure does a better job of it than conventional sports, which appeals to me as a scrawny, muscleless smoker lol
How good a runner were you? I had to drop out of indoor and outdoor because my coaches said i was too slow. I have been trying to run fast by changing my diet and dedicating 6 out of 7 days to weight training and conditioning. Still the slowest on the team.
That’s f’d up. not like by being slow you’re draining team resources.
What is Socialism, Alex.
I’m not even mad at athletes getting paid that much, I’m mad at the gap between people of such different values.
Why is it that a Fire Fighter has to fight to the teeth to keep his station alive while a rookie baseball player has his life pretty much set.
And I say “set” because if that rookie baseball player simply lived life at a upper middle class level, he could play as a rookie for 4 years, and be good for the rest of his life.
Professional athletes inspire people. More importantly, they make people a lot of money. Stadiums are placed in cities. The sporting events held therein create jobs and bring their cities a lot of money.
Athletes> teachers.
The only thing preventing guys like me from being professional athletes is training, discipline, natural ability, and creation-given talent.
The only thing keeping me from being an “e-thlete” is holding down a full-time job, being a good husband, and a woefully small ass that I can only sit upon for an hour or two at a time.
“eSports”< sports
(I know. Even if I had all the time in the world, it’s possible I’d never reach Daigo status.)
At the end of the day, no one is wrong for watching sports, or pretend sports. I’m still as likely to stop putting “esports” in quotation marks as I am “holocaust.”
Wait, what?
Please elaborate, I’m sorry I’m reading this wrong, but for some reason holocaust in parenthesis comes off to me as something a holocaust denier would do.
ok all of a sudden this went to a dark place.
but we the people aren’t really paying an athlete to do that. sure some people pay for tickets to a ball game but that’s not where most of the athletes are getting their money from. we’re just providing eyeballs. big giant corporations who know that we provide these eyeballs will then pay big money to sponsor these individual players as well as the leagues because they know they will get more bang for their marketing buck.
so its not that the people are shelling out bucks to pay athletes, they’re just deriving more entertainment out of athletes, which in turn leads to giant corporations paying athletes. so you could argue its fucked up that people find sports more entertaining than science, however i do not think its right to judge others for what they find entertaining. people have a right to enjoy what they want. unless its kim karadashian. people who find that entertaining need to turn off the tv and read a book. that’s not titled twilight.
