Why no iL stick love?

Like i said, if you’re telling me you prefer whatever stick now then sure i’ll respect that…What i wont believe is that you guys were able to tell the difference of quality sticks when they were the norm of your childhood. Im curious how old some of you guys are, i mean i was in elementary playing in the arcades, barely a teen when SF came out.

I was born in 1980.

For what it’s worth I saw a NeoGeo cab at a Pizza Hut about 2 years ago, figured I’d play a little SamSho. The stick was ass on that, it had to be Compact style or something because there were no god damn corners in that thing and I couldn’t get specials to come out half the time I attempted it. By that point I was fully used to a Seimitsu LS-40. My stick days didn’t really start until 09 when I got serious about playing.

I had brief encounters with Western style parts in my local arcade and gas station in Hawaii in 92. I’d play SF2 and MK. Sometimes FF, but mostly those two games/series. I really don’t remember the sticks having corners, and I sucked big time ass trying to play those games on stick. SNES finally got ports of those games and I played pad from there out, especially since I ended up moving from Hawaii so no more local arcade.

It was about 16 years between me last playing a Western style Joystick vs when I got familiar and used to Japanese. I used to mix iL buttons with Japanese joysticks (which I still think feels pretty good) but anyway, I was just curious since encountering a Eurostick a week ago. It felt way different than I recall the Western equipped cabs had, the corners felt pretty good and I liked the much higher tension. I don’t think it’s any better than a Japanese stick nor do I feel I have any sort of nostalgia goggles, I was simply making an observation since I was not expecting the stick to feel as nice as it did. I was expecting ass frankly, because that’s all I’ve ever heard those parts are/were.

As for my preference of higher tension sticks, that doesn’t come from having grown up on Western cabs. I mean, I had probably 3 years at most every month or two when I would get a chance to go to the arcade across my elementary school (haha it was pretty slick going there afterwards) and then it was about 15 or so years later when I finally starting playing on stick at home. Whoops, edit, lost train of thought and didn’t finalize this paragraph, lol. Anyway, I simply like higher tension springs because they snap back to neutral so much faster, which feels better in dashing games. Just IMO.

I was born in '73, so… 14(?) when I played the first ‘Street Fighter’ (now that game had bad buttons!).

And you’re right, I thought the sticks I played on at that time were great (assuming they were working) - it wasn’t until I first played on a Japanese cab (maybe mid-90s-ish?) that I knew there could be a difference. I had no idea what that difference was, of course - had never heard of Sanwa, or even knew about the different parts in Japanese cabs (or even that the cabs were specifically Japanese) - I just knew that the ‘new’ machines felt a lot better (to me) to play on.

Even then, though, I had friends who hated using them and preferred the ‘old’ machines…

What world is this where Pizza Hut has arcade cabs?

I grew up on American styleparts

The pizza hut in my small town had a couple, every other one I remember going to in the early/mid 90’s did too.

Since it was asked, I’m 31. My town didn’t have a dedicated arcade, but there were machines in just about every store/laundromat around. I used to ride my bike all over the place to play them. The first game I learned to pull off specials consistently in was Art of Fighting 2.

This sort of thing was not that uncommon up until the late nineties. Hell, the incredibly shitty pizza place near my house (Shakeys for those wondering) had a Mortal Kombat cabinet for a long time. That had American style parts and a computer that, until you hit the bosses, didn’t know how to handle Kano’s Blanka Ball analog.

I was also really surprised to see that the mall that had once displaced its arcade in favor of a fucking nail salon had recently installed a small nook of arcade machines near its movie theater including X-Men vs. Street Fighter.

Pretty much every pizza restaurant had several arcade cabs…Pretty much all gas station had an arcade or two at the very corner of the shop. My fondest memory was walking to a local pizza joint almost 5 miles away. Even when it rained & rained a lot in WA just to play an arcade. I usually had maybe $1.25 cent to play with if that. They had a SF2 cab, Capcom Bowling, & Neo-Geo w/ World Heroes. This was pretty much our place to level up as the main arcade was a bit intimidating to be at especially during the times of the rapid bloods vs crips gangs & the long lines to play SF, not to mention it would have cost us 50cents for the bus ride. I wasn’t even aware what type of joystick or buttons were being used.

I was just mesmerize of an arcade period. I had pretty much every console but nothing could compare to an arcade, especially a fighting game. So when im reading about these “kids” bitching about controls back then just blows my mind away. “The button layout is to awkward & the stick movement is inaccurate” fuck that noise. Darksakul you were only 11 years old when SF2 came out, come on man…GeorgeC is just full of shit period. Your telling me when SF came out you were like not going to play it because its not a Wico…SEriously? Seeing Mortal Kombat Kano ripping a heart out & all you can think about is what type of joystick part is used? Seeing Killer Instinct TJ Combo do 46hit Ultra Combo & you are wondering what kind of micro switches it uses?

rcaido get the hell off your high horse.

Im with rcaido, I was born in 1980 and growing up around SF2 I’m telling you NO ONE complained about arcade sticks, buttons, monitor or ANTHING during the late 80s/late 90s. In fact I can remember people being so desperate to play SF2T they used arcades with 3 buttons per player!

I WAS BORN IN THE 70’S AND I HAVE NOTHING CONSTRUCTIVE TO ADD TO THIS THREAD.

This is pretty much the problem with Happ/IL parts at the moment. They are suffering the same problem Crown did, where they won’t fit into consumer fightstick cases.

The same goes for the buttons as well. If you ditch the led board and slightly force them, the buttons will fit in a TE2 case, but it would be so much easier if Happ/IL would actually make short shaft buttons.

I grew up playing on the older MK/Hap/IL sticks and love them.

As for the TC about the stick being snappy and having a fast return, the Happ sticks are least 2-3x thicker than Sanwa and Seimitsu sticks and it requires a considerably stiffer spring.

I like how when everyone else agrees to respect everyone’s opinions @rcaido‌ continues to talk shit. Stop this now or I may have to put some limits on your posting privileges.

Why are we talking about whether or not that we knew the difference between sticks and it affecting our enjoying of the game back then? this thread started off asking why people dont like american style stick as much compared to japanese. Those of us that grew up playing american cabs had nothing else to compare it to. But living in this day and age, we can compare now. Just because i grew up playing on american style sticks doesnt mean i have to always have a soft spot in my heart for the hardware, if something i find better comes along, im going with it. The joystick isnt what made gaming for me back in the day, the game is what mattered to me.

edit- Man, i remember cabinets in the pizzahuts. This is back when pizzahuts actually had it so you could sit down and eat, not just a small store front. Pizza hut, Fiesta, every laundry mat, and just about every burger joint had a sf, mk, neo geo or xmen cab in them

i have an sf25 stick modded with “american” parts and is 360/ps3. i used it for a while and really loved it but, it was out of commission for some time and i had to go back to a sanwa stick. when i finally fixed it, it was too hard to go back to so now it’s just an art piece i guess.

i had to sit on the ground to use it though and i think i’m getting too old for that.

I remember in the Marines, my barracks’ common room had a Neo-Geo Kizuna Encounter cab.

There was a Metal Slug/Aero Fighters 2 S-slot NEO Geo cab at the French Creek PX, along with a Jurassic Park Pinball Machine.
(French Creek was a area of Camp Lejeune)

I think every barracks in French Creek except for Recon’s barracks had a NEO GEO or CPS2 cab.

I still want a classic red neo geo cab for nostalgia’s sake.

These two guys shitted on the thread, they hardly had any experience with IL Euros according to their post, yet im the one getting threaten w/my posting privileges…I already said i respect other people if they prefer the japs now compared to the American sticks as their are sticks you can actually compare too…Im just calling out the bullshit saying they didn’t like it & chose not to play w/ the sticks cuz it was inaccurate garbage parts when fighting games first came out. Anyway, enjoy the circle jerk. Im done with this thread…Unsubscribe

At least Pizza Hut actually had cabs where you lived. They never had anything like that here. Though they do still run full size restaurants here, and not just store fronts.

In the barracks at the Presidio of Monterrey we had a 4 slot Geo, a pinball, and Tekken 2. Those Happs/IL sticks were great for KOF, but man did they suck for Tekken.
