I don’t think he was asking about the mechancis. I’m sure he knows the basics. I think he was asking why the game is considered trash by more high level competitive gamers. It’s a fair question actually. He may have intended to troll, but his post doesn’t look like a troll at all.
I have played DOA and know at the most basic level how to do combos, and I know the buttons. But there is obvious things about the game that high level players use that you can’t just read on gamefaqs or the manual. People assume it’s a given, but it’s less obvious than people like to believe.
Doa’s counter system during hit/recovery what makes shit stupid. If you play a high level tekken player lots of strings can’t be used because they’ll be countered through duck or SS. Same thing occurs in Doa but now they are countered with actual counters. While they might not be spammed at high level they are a constant threat. Makes real aggression hard to come by and most damage is done through bait a counter > Lifter. Even baiting countes can be hard with some strings recovery so you get a bait/counter/throw mind game set rather than high/low/throw and its really defensive, predictable, and just not fun.
Its not that. Check his other threads. I wouldn’t have said that if this was his first thread (and you’ll see from other’s posts I’m not the only one).
Basically he’s just asking for attention.
But I’ll be serious; I used to play DOA2U pretty hardcore back in Germany on my Xbox Live account and I loved it. Sure I hated how counters took off roughly a fourth (like Bayman) but I always thought it was pretty serious. However during that (sophmore) year, that was all I had so I didn’t recognize its faults and things done better in other fighting games. Like the stun system and then on top of that being able to counter hold. Like Purify said, the fact that just about everything is safe or even advantageous on block (there are a few things that are pretty unsafe and punishable by both fast attacks and throws, but def in the minority). Sidestepping is basically useless outside of when you’re far away from the enemy and to avoid being with your back to the edge. Did I mention the level hazards do absurd amounts of damage? Like the Great wall, you start atop a tower and you both have your backs to the stairs on either side. One person makes a mistake and gets hit by a move with blowback properties and bam, you just lost half your life. The input scheme is retarded, both in the motions and how easy it is for a button masher to get strings that mix-up actually rather well. Throws are stupidly too easy to escape, especially multi-parts. Like someone said earlier ninja characters are purposely made more powerful. I could go on and on.
TL;DR: Great casual game, but for people that actually want a game that makes sense and flows and a higher level of play, play Virtua Fighter, Tekken or just about anything else. Its flaws that allow it to be so accessible and visibly pleasing totally end up shooting itself in the foot so you can’t take it seriously. And then of course the blatant D and E cup women/fanservice add to that. BTW, Itagaki actually said he wanted the game to be casual and mashy oriented so its kinda like Smash in that the developer doesn’t want it to be taken seriously so why should we?
