IMO, all the regular commentators are solid (Chris Matrix my favorite by far). People who bitch about fighting game commentators much not watch enough professional sports. After listening to arrogant POS egomaniacs like Joe Buck and Bob Costas (ESPECIALLY Bob Costas), our fighting game commentators are a breath of fresh air.
I’m with Koop: appreciate what you have. I dread the day when we have commentators who care more about being the next Howard Cosell then the community.
I will add that one that I would like to see more of is MarlinPie. Great voice, knowledgeable, doesn’t let the game get away from him. Love you see him teamed with a great color man like CM or Yipes.

Never understood the hate for Ski.
You wanna know straight up bad commentary? Max at the Cross Counter Inv. thing. He’s great and what he does for the community is sick, but dude you are not fit for commentating. Maybe it was just that tourney and the seemingly more straight-laced feel it had?
Oh and Rush Hour is the best duo. Or anything with anyone really, as we’re lucky to have a good 90% of the commentators (based on rigorous calculation) be well-informed and good on the mic. The day that someone like Juicebox or Tasty Steve isn’t commentating is a fucked up day.
The FGC has no idea what they want from commentary.

Skisonic isn’t bad at all. He really isn’t, but he know he’s wrong for getting on the mic all the damn time with that super lost voice of his. Haha
That’s perhaps the only reason why he’s hated, unless the nerdgasms he have on his favorite players, which other niggas would do the same shit.

Spooky’s Angels (Nina,Persia,Remix’s girlfriend) were pretty good at the first Curleh Mustache tournament. I got a kick out of that.

I may never complain about commentary again after hearing that. Though If I was suddenly struck by blindness I’d be appreciative for it.

How could people come to a consensus? If there’s anything to learn from these threads is that no matter what people say, our opinions on commentary are as diverse as peoples opinions on music, art, or anything subjective. Most people could establish a list of things that sound like quasi-objective benchmarks for good commentary, but some of the most beloved FG commentators over the years were more comedians/hype men than actual commentators.
I’ll admit the only commentators I like are famous 3s commentators and people I know which is as biased as you can get.

I know EMP probably gets a lot of hate, but emp remix is actually a very well spoken commentator who gets pretty technical
I never played MvC2 and have watched very few matches. I feel like I would/could watch and at least get a basic understanding of the game from Ski’s commentary. Same can be said from the majority of the commentators in the scene. Like others have said, we probably won’t realize how good we have it till it’s gone 
Edit: I did watch the MvC2 tourney at 2k10 and yes, it was gdlk 
skisonic always feels so… fake. The lesson of his commentary is that it’s entirely possible to be trying waaay too hard.
Also its goddamn obnoxious how he says terms in weird ways to try to be ‘authentic’ (ie his bizarre-ass pronunciation of anything Japanese).
Best commentary though is Jwong when he actually cares and isn't just texting or tweeting or whateverthefuck he does on his smartphone.Skisonic is god tier.
