Why does game journalism suck?: Angry Joe FTW!

havent read the thread, but just a small reply to this. its funny that even our community of veteran players have been fairly useless in giving an honest review of anything since sf4 vanilla, as they tried their hand at politicking their way to sponsorships and the good graces of players, to’s, stream monsters, etc…

i mean for fucks sake, the conversation of ps3 vs xbox IS JUST STARTING to get air play, and have organizers change their official console at majors. people have had to painstakingly talk about it vs a forum of morons here to the point that our nose’s bleed, and there were still a shit ton of people that were like, eh i dont feel it. lol but even outside of that, the players kept their mouth’s shut on streams, on twitter, on forums, in vlogs, blogs, etc…, but im like wow, ive heard these same players shit all over playing sf4 series, mvc2, and mvc3 series on ps3, and how much it sucks that certain tournies are still using ps3. but they were politicking the scene, so they wanted to keep a certain angle before causing a nerd riot.

so all in all, its a shame seeing a scene that was very critical of quality games, and the consoles we played them on, turn into a bunch of sheep and dick suckers post sf4 vanilla, and are finally all now like YOOOO, ps3 sucks, umvc3 is so beyond fucking stupid but fun, sf4 is the most boring shit ever, etc… lol. im glad to say at least ive been consistent with my hate and criticisms, and everything ive had a problem with in certain games has eventually been said by i guess more credible players that have now grown out of dick sucking for sponsorship or whatever imaginary shit in their heads. lol

remember just not to long ago, sfxt was sooooo great, and oh god, no one ever wanted to discuss the blatant issues of vanilla mvc3 pre release, or the worthless adjustments to ultimate, but i digress. i just hope the fgc continues with building its integrity back up, and stops selling out just for a paycheck, stream viewers, or small sponsorships no more worth an 11.00 an hour job on its best day.

s-kill is a cool dude, kicks the real behind closed doors, but i hope he got paid well for all that shit he had to take, and or praise even when it was shit and capcom didnt listen to him.

To be fair about the PS3 vs 360 stuff, the real PS3 negative (lags every now and then after it’s been on for a couple of hours) was never recorded on camera to throw into TO’s faces until a couple of months ago.

VideoGames Journalism sucks because of every issue brought up in the “doritosgate” scandal with Rab Florence.

In short “swag” is the problem. Most of the big vg journalism sites are handing out paid-for reviews, theres a culture of feeding reviewers gifts and stuff related to the game with the sole intention of influencing their reviews, and a lot of the time it works.
The problem is people like Geoff Keighly (sp?), who are in it to be superstars, they want money, they wanna have a known-name, and videogames are not their highest priority. It’s a rotten core of people caring about everything other than videogames.
It’s nothing to do with ad revenue.

I think SRK’s current goal is to make the general fighting game scene bigger period. And if this means playing worse games (and avoiding criticism), and adopting a worse attitude (calling people to come spectate Justin instead of working hard and beating him) then so be it. It’s more rewarding to educate the masses but it’s also way harder, especially when the masses don’t really want to be educated.

.

Speaking of thin skins, dig the 9 people who flagged my previous post.

The only good gaming articles were written by Game Geezer.

Now read these: http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/19o1q1/polygon_admits_censoring_review_opinions_to_avoid/

I like Polygon but this is bullshit. There’s obviously a need for moderating and editing content on sites, but censoring someone because they have a different opinion? GTFO.

No.

It isn’t journalism if you get your story from a press release.

This is the only site that i care about for viewing game news

Ever since that stupid Emma Watson pic was posted in lounge I can’t unsee her in your av.

Thanks to davidstar I came across this hilarious video that encapsulates so perfectly why games journalism is nearly impossible to respect. Right after bitching how sexist and perverted the game is I bet he fucked a hooker in GTA.

So now others are catching on finally.

Man, can this trend of SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIOR “reviews” just die please? It’s gotten so out of hand that reviews will ditch talking about the actual game in favor of whining that a game is too sexist. People are dismissing entire games regardless of quality, regardless of design, regardless of art style, regardless of innovation, regardless of writing, regardless of replayability, regardless of every god damn factor important to an actual video game because “Oh no that girl’s shirt is cut too low!”

Get the fuck out of here with that shit. If you can’t enjoy a video game because of some really minor character designs and elements, you should probably get your priorities in order.

The objectification of women in video games is a very real thing compounded by the overall dominance of men in the billion-dollar video game industry. It’s a legitimate subject to talk about regardless of whether or not it ruffles your precious feathers.

Women being objectified in videogames is inherently a bad thing

That’s why Lolita is inherently a bad novel

(I’m playing Devil’s Advocate here)

(or am I)

As if the reviews before the SJW trend were any better… Check every fighting game review and find 0 words on mechanics. You read the review and end up with no clue how the game even plays…

Different genres of games should have different reviewers. I don’t read or watch many American sports match reviews, but surely you don’t send baseball enthusiasts to football matches, or vice versa

But an expert is not going to put his validity on the line because of publisher pressure. The problem starts with the target crowd and the source of funding.

An expert website would have the readers pay for the content, and the reviewers not relying on anyone from the outside to get money and copies of games.

Jim Sterling is the only game journalist I actually trust and I enjoy his jimquisition.

Polygon disgusts me with their lack of an editor-in-chief and they routinely post biased reviews with slanted scores to generate traffic based on shock value.
The penny arcade report is mad if you find hypocrisy in their articles due to them being linked to penny arcade (because it’s a separate thing), but then why do they use the brand name?
IGN, Gamestop, etc etc, all these “big name journalism” sites are rife with bought scores, review embargos (if it’s not above x% then the review has to be delayed)…

Gotta max that CPM I suppose…

I find it funny how self-destructive these things are though, and people are getting pushed away from season’s passes (because borderlands 2 wasn’t clear that a season’s pass wasn’t all the dlc) and pre-ordering (shoddy games), even import markets are suffering (jojo).

I guess game journalism sucks because it’s so young compared to movies and novels, and as such video games aren’t respected by the masses. Hopefully GTA V will set some gears in motion…

AH, yes fighting games and character actions games…

See, anybody can watch a movie and form an opinion, but fighting games and character action games require time invested in the product to learn the game mechanics and to do things, game reviewers usually have a couple hours to play a game, not a couple days, or a couple months, to learn a game.

Which is why you should ask people who LOVE those types of games about them, not some two-bit journalist.
