r you reading the fourms? are you looking up youtube vids and trying to practice? do you know ur fundamentals likes footsies, spacing, hit comfrims? don’t just assume because u have excution that you’ll start winning

Im assuming you have just started playing fighting games 3 days ago or something. Thats how most of these threads work… I went into training mode for 15 minutes and I STILL CANT WIN

But in all honesty, how exactly do you suck? No one truly does unless they don’t try hard enough. We’ve all been there, so there has to be some reason behind it. Not knowing the matchups for your characters? Dropping your combos?

Thats normally the problem. Most new players forget that they actually have to work on new things in training mode, instead of running through the one or two combos that they know.

I’ve been having trouble with fighting games in general, but I’m talking about AE in particular. I’ve tried different characters, but I was mostly playing Guile. I’m not certain how strong my fundamentals are. I’ve playing a turtling game while trying to find an opportunity to get in and do damage I’ve been throwing out SBs and walking up behind them and trying to follow them up with mixups, trying to use different tools like crouching forward, crouching roundhouse, backhand, etc. I learned to use FK sparingly. I don’t know any good combos, but I never feel like I get any good opportunities to land them anyway. I have a hard time getting in on fireball characters. I often find myself putting up a decent fight, winning one of three rounds, doing a lot of damage, gaining life lead at some point in a number of matches, but in the end I still lose most of my matches.

Actually, I’ve been playing casually for at least a decade. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to find a scene in any of the places I’ve lived to help me improve, and I’ve never had any good players to practice with.

I can’t find a scene where I live, and I don’t know anyone who’s interested in playing offline.

Perhaps. But wouldn’t the other online players have the same disadvantages I do?

As far as I can tell, the Oklahoma scene is mostly in Tulsa, and that’s a 2.5 hr drive from where I live.

Oklahoma city has a scene the same as tulsa. your just not looking. If you want to play people more than whats being offered why dont you host casuals at your place? People will go.

Ah, if I may say something about mindset. You want to get better, correct? Yet you seem to be looking for quickfire tips and solutions. Taking a 2.5 hour drive doesn’t seem like a practical option to you. But say you talk to the guys, find a day when you can take the trip all the way down and meet up with the most of them and just indulge in hours of playing. While you are playing, you get to know the people, as you get to know the people, you guys get to discuss the game, you guys get to discuss other things to keep from getting too tired of the just playing the game, and you’ll learn on and off the game. Then hell, make the most of it, hit up a bar or something afterwards. Make it a day to have fun and play FGs. Don’t think of it as some chore or task, that’s how you don’t get better.

Yeah, it just depends on how much you want to get better. I can sorta sympathize on the whole “too far” thing. Playing other real lfie players and playing different styles is how you get better, though. Online is not a good indicator of skill as tournaments are played in real time, not online. And no matter how little lag there may be online, there are a lot of things that you can only learn from playing offline.

You have your execution down? Most people who say that are actually not there. Can you do Guile’s cr.lk cr.lp cr.mp xx flash kick consistently? Can you do flash kick fadc ultra 2 consistently? s.lp s.hp? Corner b.hk, cr.mp xx sonic boom, cr.hk? Consistently means at least 85%. If you think you have that, go into training and do the combo 20 times, see how many times you get it. Otherwise you have something simple to work on. You can’t have close-ranged offense in SF4 without a hit-confirm so if you don’t have that, don’t even try.

Playing Guile involves patience, iron will, and fast reactions. You talk about using cr.hk, in general that’s an awful idea because if they block the first hit they can fucking ultra you for free. You shouldn’t give up a charge just to walk behind a sonic boom. Using b.lk to advance is a good way to maintain offense.

Guile doesn’t get in on fireball characters. He wins the long range/mid range war. If you want to play lots of close range offense, don’t pick Guile. You have to be good enough to match their fireballs with charge buffered Sonic Booms. You have to anti-air every time with cr.hp, air throw, and sometimes s.mk. You stop people from walking in on you with Sonic Boom, s.hp, s.hk, and cr.mk. Guile is a walking fireball trap. They can’t keep up with him because their fireballs are weaker to jump-ins, and you have backfist and U2 to punish fireballs at mid range anyway. They can’t jump because of cr.hp and air throw. They can’t focus because of sonic boom + backfist/s.hp. Guile is fun because he’s about just outplaying the opponent with fundamentals.

Stop blaming your weaknesses on your lack of a local scene. Even if it’s true, it’s not helpful. You have online resources - Youtube, SRK character forums, online frame data, etcetera.

The problem with online is that the online game is literally a different game because certain things become impossible to do on reaction because of lag. For example, anti-airing Zangief online with Guile is a nightmare. Anti-airing him offline is pretty straightforwards.
