This genre takes a long time to become proficient in – we’re talking about a year’s worth of experience before you can truly become fluid in your execution thus freeing up more brain power for mind games rather than trying to remember combos or critical execution. Honestly, keep at it. Every new player knows how you feel, and every veteran player can tell you that they’ve been there before, and although the improvement is not SUBSTANTIAL on a daily basis, it definitely exists.
I started playing 3SOE to get into fighting games. Despite it’s flaws I am really enjoying it thus far (but that’s besides the point). I picked up a sparring partner off of ranked matches quite early on, someone who was substantially better than me. We didn’t really talk much, just played a hell of a lot of matches when we were both online together (the rematch function is honestly one of the greatest saving graces of 3SOE). We’ve been doing it for months. Recently he messaged me after our last bout of fights that I’m really improving hard. I used to be real ass at combos, but I’m starting to land a lot more of my BNB’s consistently, and getting solid punishes in when the opportunity arrives instead of freezing at that critical moment going “Wait, wait, how do I do this again?”
So keep at it. If you get pissed, try to push past it and keep playing, go back into training mode and brush up on your execution, but by all means don’t push yourself to the point that it’s mere work rather than play. There have been several days where I’ve picked up the stick, gotten spanked five matches in a row and grown so salty I don’t even want to look at my Hori. The point is: you aren’t alone, we were all there.
There is no magic answer that instantly makes you better. No, you’re not missing anything. Just think about it – every character has at least –
Standing normals x6
Crouching normals x6
Forward/back jump normals x6
Neutral normals x6
And several close standing normals (~x4)
That’s already 28 moves that all have their own methods of spacing and execution to be effective before we even talk about supers or specials, all of which typically have three different levels of power (four if EX) which all represent fairly original moves in their own right (slow fireball is a much different beast from a fast fireball or even EX fireball).
And this is all across a cast of 20+ characters in most games.
Learning all of this information is DIFFICULT. Takes time. So take your time, and enjoy the ride.
