Exactly, there are few people who actually have good avatars and I don’t see why people don’t try to break the same horrible pattern and get something better than pulsing sparkles covered with scanlines and do something good.
I actually liked the very first iPod avatar I saw here, also, until I realized EVERYONE had that. People have gotten tired of the iPod theme by now, but why haven’t they gotten tired of the really horrible trends that have been going on for a long time?
Also, if I pointed out your avatar, or something you made, as terrible, don’t take it personally. It’s just that your avatar is terrible

If this were TM, you’d have a point (well that is if TM wasn’t a landfill right now).
As it is (as someone already mentioned) people here are gamers first and ‘graphic designers’ second, if at all. That’s why trends work so well here, because it’s a social aspect that makes you feel more welcome, regardless of how tired the trend is (an example being how overrun OC had become with the Ipod avs within three days after the intial thread, or how I got well over 100 requests for Team Light Kick avatars the first time over in under two weeks). That’s why you see groove bars and character sprites, because in essence you’re displaying your gaming personality, and to someone who couldn’t give a damn as to whether or not the avatar holds aesthetic value, well then team and groove bar avatars work out just fine. I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with either of them, as many folks have gone out of their way to shake up the tired way of team / groove avatars.
Take Azn Skater’s avatar. Just having Morrigan being animated works wonders for the avatar. Look at Rei’s team like avatar, not only did he present it well, it even matches the new forum style. I’ve seen some real great team avatars. EEK, an old veteran, had a real knack for them.
Regardless of that fact, even the guys who actively try their hand at ‘graphics’ with avatars have to start somewhere, and the likes of sparkles and all that is a base they may build upon.
My complaint would be that many people really aren’t pushing themselves in that regard, and that only a choice few (like Quiche for example) go a bit out of their way to make some great work. I personally love making avatars, as I’m usually screwing with some new game or watching some anime that I’m eager to throw into that 160 x 100 somehow, it’s something I look foward to, regardless of how simple my style is.
Regardless of all this, ZANDWICH, EVERYONE OF YOUR AVATARS AND YOUR OBSESSION WITH TOTALLY SPIES, A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE SHOW GEARED TOWARDS THE TWEEN DEMOGRAPHIC ABSOLUTELY FUCKING SUCK.

Rei’s avatar is fine, it actually looks kind of nice with the new forum setup. It is a team avatar, sure, but it doesn’t have the horrible sparkles and shit which is what this thread is about

I’m not really taking anything to a heartfelt level, I was just making a thread about the poor quality of avatars. I don’t actually care very much, just barely enough to make a thread about some horrible avatar trends.
In reality, I think the trend of swishes and sparkles is finally finishing its run. I’ve noticed a huge decline in the amount of them since I first came here and everybody had a stupid fucking doolie avatar or a picture of magneto with a shitload of sparkles that said RTSD MAGNUS on it.
am i really alone when I think that the combination of all of the horrible trends for avatars isn’t grating on the eyes?
