madden and strong console exclusives.
fighters are not popular because people want to have fun right away and balence well made games are mostly boring(until you play them competively and have some decent comp then they become extremely additive).

Hmm, I see what you mean about the coins thing. But since your not a kid anymore and have your own income, $1 per play shouldn’t matter. Now, you said something about a flat rate. Would a $5 for about 2 hours of play be good enough for you? Or is that asking to much?

If all the arcades do get closed down, we’ll just have to deal with gaming events at peoples house :l
Not as fun, or is it…
Oh hell no. $5 is more than reasonable and I’d be more than happy to pay that, its not a problem. I still play at the arcades here and I don’t play at LAN cafes so much. When I do go though, the $2 lan cafes here are about $10 to $12 for a all nighter (anywhere from 1-3am) so its generally a good deal, the negative part of it though is that you dont have the random factor that you would have in a arcade, and its console…two things that i dont like at all. But yeah I agree with what you’re saying.
The $1 dollar per game isnt the issue, if I’m going to pay a dollar per game, I would want something similar to the Japanese arcade experience, and I don’t think anyone can disagree with me on that for the most part…boy, I miss Japanese arcades.

With alcohol, food, girls, and Chairs I don’t see it not being fun
In Thailand we have sit down style japanese cabs. In the US, its different?
Very much so.
One other thing that I notice about arcades in Japan is that they bring out the interactivity in everyone. They’ve got a million different types of DDR games and we’ve allready discussed that they are expensive as hell and only do so well in the states. They’ve got the war sim games where they use there cards that give them special powers in a game. They’ve also got MMORPGs there. But then again, we can do that from our computers at home. I saw a buisness man that looked about 50 playing a game where you have to DJ with like turntables and shit. He was dancing with the music have a damn good time and getting S rank score.

Yeah, lots of older players are at arcades.
Keep in mind i see LOTS of people playing Majhong games at arcades (even like, REALLY old people). Hell, i dont even know any American who knows HOW to play Majhong, much less putting that sort of thing in an arcade.
And then there’s the medal games which is like gambling, but its legal for anyone of any age. Quite funny to see like, 10 year olds popping a buncha medals into some slot machine. I just laugh.
Pachinko is the shit. Can’t touch that.
no, not pachinko. Pachinko is completely different. These are like, medal games (i guess token might be a better word than metal) where you play like, little games or whatever in order to win more medals. They range from slot machines to a game where you shoot fish to get reels spinning to get medals to like, those games where coins get pushed off an edge. There’s so many different crazy types. There’s one where you bet on horses, and there’s big comfy looking chairs for them with a drink holder and everything.
Well, I know Pachinko is different, I was just commenting how they have places just for Pachinko and how fun it can get.
Ah, nevermind then, i thought i might have confused you by using the word “metal” since pachinko balls are little metal balls.
Either way, pachinko costs a crap ton of money for not a lot of play time. Crazy.
the arcade is far more popular in japan for many reasons, but high population density and heavy use of public transportation are the two most relevant in my opinion. do you realize that the japanese pay one dollar to play most games when americans pay 25 or 50 cents? to play ssf2x, i pay 100 yen at one arcade and another arcade luckily has it for 50 yen. they can also make more money here partly because the japanese part with a lot more money than the average american is willing to.
Meh, i mostly go to arcades that have it for 50yen a play. Its amazing how one arcade can have it for 100 yen a play, and then less than half a block away, another arcade can have the same game for 50 yen.
Then again i hear tokyo is always 100 yen a play. Crazy.
And yeah, Japanese people are more willing to part with their money.
all i can say after reading all 4 pages of this topic (never read a topic about this) is WOW. Damn! The japanese do it like that?! and i just resumed studying the japanese laguage and thinking (again) about finally visiting japan, now i DEFINITELY have to go (especially after what heartnana said about the medal games, etc.)! if i like the atmosphere, i may stay.
now, when it comes to american gaming vs japanese gaming (which is what it boils down to), different cultures are going to play games differently. it’s in all the posts, they all have something valuable to look at. japan goes out to play games, and america (usually) plays at home, simple as that. there’s more than 1 way to skin a cat, as they say.
but from what i heard MY personal preference would be to play games in the arcade like they do in japan, specially cuz i mostly play shooters, fighting, & rpgs. one of the reasons why ill live there for a while IF i like how it is.
How the hell is everybody leaving for japan? No legal troubles? hehe
I just didn’t get something, there are MMORPG in arcades in japan? Like online arcades? I think I just get it wrong and somebody were talking about Cafes, but, just to be sure im asking…
True…because the average Japanese person doesn’t have to buy a car and all the crap that comes with it (insurance, taxes, tag renewals, oil changes, and God help you if you get into an accident) and let’s not forget above all…GAS.
Dunno know about that…I’d say LAN cafes are the future of the tourney scene.
Problem is…just like with arcades, not all places have good LAN cafes available.
We had something like that in Cleveland, OH - It was called “The Powerhouse” it had a bar and everything and it was the last acrade to close, around when MvC2 came out.
Right now in Houston there is a place called “Planet Zero” and so far it’s doing very well cause of the Otaku/Japanophile angle it has, the latest Japanese games (GGXX: AC anyone?) and now it has car meets every weekend that caters mostly to the ricer types also it helps that the owner and his friends roll around in Skylines and the like.
But mostly americans are lazy, why go to the arcade when you can just chill at home?
You can openly smoke in japanese arcades?? Even marijuana ?
