Well, the chances of your opponent NOT smoking is slim anyways.
And keep in mind that the cabinets are back to back (with a few exceptions) but in general, youre closer to people watching behind you than you are to your opponent. =P

1- the arcades themselves loose money because of the infrastructure (cost, rent, maintenance.)
2- xbox live does the same thing an arcade does with less money and more play per pay.
3- children are a lot safer at home then in an arcade (times have gotten better though)
4- stand alone arcades need other devices to make money off the casual gamer (why do u see most games restaurants, bars, theaters, pool halls, etc.)
if u would like to make an arcade, make it a side business within a business or else consider it a hobby and try and turn the site into a museum.
Um, population? 125m people crammed into a country smaller than California?
It isn’t that hard to turn a profit in a social environment when you have such a retarded population density and a decent per-capita income.
University Pinball, West Philly, there are ash trays next to each of the five MvC2 machines…
cs/halflife 2 does get play in japan, there is a dedicated standup for it, and i saw a few cabinets while I was there, forget which one it was though. But I’m not sure how popular it is, don’t think it’s too popular.
As for WOW, I’m not sure on that, but there are several MMO’s/online games which are arcade only…I don’t understand the appeal in it and they look really expensive, but whatever. People probably play WOW or some other mmorpg at netcafes though.
I loved the fact that you could smoke in japanese arcades, since I’m a smoker, and cigs are like uh, less than 3 bucks a pack. certain japanese arcades like taito station, sega etc have themed ashtrays by every cabinet - i should have been a shady negro and taken one of the ashtrays, haha. Now if you could only smoke bud in there/actually get weed, I would move there in a second :looney:
because people are attracted to violence and that violence has changed from street fighter to fps etc. at first it was cool beatin up on someone and talkin shit. the aspect behind it was that if someone talks shit to you in your face you gotta defend your shit. well with online games you can talk shit all you want and regardless of if you suck you can get away with it safely.
Yeah, I guess I’m just used to washington and no smoking indoors thing already.
welcome to 1998
I guess I should have made myself clear when I said like MB. I wasn’t talking about the fighting system even though it has some similarities. But I was meaning more like how most of the characters are young and kiddy like with the cuteness factor going. You’ve hated my name forever? Damn that’s a long time. I hope that works out for you.
ONEZ
maybe because the japanese don’t mind the horrible english voice overs in games like ggxxac
i cannot find ANY arcades in belton, and the only place a no of that has 3rd strike is some place where u have to pay to go inside the damn arcade wtf?
Arcades are dying because I’m assassinating arcade game programmers.
Because all the players here are cheap-asses!!!
Everytime a game comes out on Arcade, everybody swarms it, but once it comes out on home system, they ditch the arcade and play with friends.
Look what happend to Tekken 5!!
If this thread belongs anywhere, it’s FGD. I wouldn’t hold my breath on the FGD mods not immediately closing it, though.
Lets also not forget that operaters/managers these days are lazy as fuck. Something breaks, meh.
“What? Jimmy put in all his hard earned money into the busted up mvc2 machine and cant play cus the mechs are screwy and the joysticks are as responsive as a brain-dead snail? Ill take care of it…next week.”
At any rate, yes, the arcades are a dying breed here in the us. I have atleast 2 semi-local to me (read: 25 miles or so away) but neither are worth writing to japan about. I wish it where a different story, as many here do, but things are not looking too great in that area.

the internet
Truth
Every reason that people are giving for the demise of arcades is, IMO, a reason they should have thrived.
Consoles should have helped the industry.
The internet should have helped the industry.
Sports games should have exploded the industry.
So if thats all true, what happened?
IMO noone really knew what the arcade industry was about, or how to improve it. If they did know, they obviously didn’t have enough power to make it happen.
I could go into the details but seth already did, so i’ll let him cover it: http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=34763
