Why am I so terrible at sf4?

I planned on getting super but they didn’t have any in stock, so I got just basic sf4 instead until I could get 10 more dollars for ae. So I’m experianced with fighting games, like mortal kombat and soul calibur so i’m not oblivious to some things. But when I get online I just get decimated by the easiest things. Ken turtlers, or just extreme skill. I go into training for at least an hour a day getting down combos, and other mixup tactics, but I just get wrecked online. I fear once I go to ae i’m not even going to stand a chance remotely. I main ken, but I can also use Balrog, and Guile.

Because everybody is terrible when they first start out. You can’t expect to beat people on day 1. What you’re lacking in is fundamentals, and fundamentals can only be gained by experience. Right now, you’re in the phase where you just need to play more and get used to the neutral game. Stick with one character so that you level up faster.

real question is why is sf4 so terrible

Maybe it’s not you that’s bad.
Maybe it’s the game that’s bad.

All jokes / trolls aside…

Celerity is correct. The game isn’t all about combos and such. The reason “Ken turtlers” are beating you has nothing to do with how many combos you have down. It’s that you don’t understand the tactics yet. You’re not getting the bait and punish down properly. These are things you have to either research, ask, analyze, or just experiment with. I mean, here’s an example: You can’t 100% counter fireball spam. Go into training, record the dummy throwing fireballs and learn a few different ways to deal with it. Jump in, FADC move in, see if you have any moves that go through the fireballs, etc.

You can’t expect to beat a human opponent without developing tactics. Combos are a piece of the puzzle, but if you can’t get a hit, damage doesn’t mean anything.

In Street Fighter, combos and mixups are the least important of the basic fundamental skills in the game. The times when you can actually land these combos are mixups are a minor fraction of the total time you’re playing the match. So it would help if you started focusing on other far more important skills that they don’t teach you int he game’s TERRIBLE trial mode, but that you’ll learn either through good tutorials or basic play.

Understanding basic spacing, anti-airs, how to properly block and defend against mixups. These things are far more important than flashy combos, and far more practical. Just think of combos and mixups as the icing on the cake for when you have really solid basic skills.

A good start is to check out the stickied links at the top of this Newbie Section. There’s a LOT of good information out there along with links to good youtube videos and other articles that’ll help get you started. Personally, I think these videos, although not specifically related to SF4, applies to all fighting games in general:

Well I just got Arcade editon, You can add me if you want if you’re on Xbox.

Gt- Level 99 Lil B

This game is evil, RUN LEVEL RUUUUUUUUUUUUUN

It’s really not that bad anymore, just took a lot of time in training and endless. Haven’t played much ranked in awhile but I don’t think the competition at my level will get me with button mashing anymore

I know people who are good at SF4 who can’t play any other game, and
People who are great at a lot of other fighting games that suck at SF4.

I’ll probably get a lot of Disagrees for this, but I’d play SF2 a bit. That game is ALL basics. Footsies, spacing, etc without a lot of frills and extra shit. Its a really good way to learn that stuff in an environment that emphasizes THAT STUFF.

Wholeheartedly agree. Why do you think guys like Daigo and Snake Eyes are such beasts at SF4? They were born and bred in the fires of SF2. They didn’t pick up cheap characters either, they learned the hard way how to develop strong fundamentals.

Once you’ve got that in your blood, you just pile on game-specific mechanics and techniques, and you can become a monster.

Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur is so different from SF games. A friend of mine cant even play SF cause he played so much MK growing up. Soul Calibur is 3D so its hard to transfer very basics over to SF.

So, itll be hard at first, but if you play enough with friends and level up youll start to understand the game very well.

Yea, but I have only 1 friend who has ssf4, and he hates it.

Try regional matchmaking and see if anyone is in your area. EventHubs has a fight tracker, but it’s not up to date much.

You mean Sf2 turbo. Cant do even a hadoken at that speed!

Yeah, but SF2 is SF2. Even with the supers, the basics still apply.

Remember not to let people jump in on you.
Keep using the good pokes.
Give those jabs out for christmas like santa claus…
Train that BnB I told you so you can learn to confirm. Jump in attack, crouch light punch , crouch light kick, confirm block (dash punch) confirm hit (head butt)…

Next time we play, we’ll go over safety and pressure…
