Merk’s are hitgrabs. The grappler in UNIEL is Waldstein.

Who has, deservedly, gotten a few mentions in this thread already. Dude’s so good.
Merkava is kind of like Twelve from 3S, except he doesn’t suck.
whenever I hear about Waldstein, two things come to my mind:
- his theme music is awesome
- fighting Yuzuriha and Hilda feels hopeless, I don’t even expect to win, unless the opponent makes enough mistakes (and I have enough HP and time left, otherwise it feels like a waste of effort). Haven’t played enough against Gordeau or Vatista, who I feel might give Wald a hard time getting in when played well enough, like the former two.
What about Hokuto no Ken’s Mr. Heart?

Man I wish I still had those old Tobal 2 matches. Mary was so fucking good.

As for Marth being a good grappler…
[details=Spoiler]…I tend to agree.

I give my vote to Q from SFIII:3S.

(This is my favorite color for Q in the console versions of 3S. Favorite arcade color would probably be LK [white trench coat w/grey & black accents].)[/details]

[] Tons of health after three taunts (you can basically brush off getting hit by Chun-Li’s Super Art II like it’s nothing)
[] Combos after command grab are fun
[] Unique non-command grab specials for a grappler, encompassing both motion and charge moves
[] Overall moveset makes him feel like he weighs two metric tons
[] Has that “big guy” and “trying to scare you” feel that all true grapplers should have
[] Has the best parry animation in the game (a)

Actually changing mine to Tamaki from Aquapazza.
Grapplers are kind of bad in general.
Now why would you say that?
How often have grapplers won major tournaments? How often would you say grapplers are considered top tiers? Maybe there’s just a fundamental weakness that’s inherent to being a grappler, particularly in Capcom games.

'Gief was top tier in EX+a
Daimon was top in KoF98
Waldstein was top tier in UNIEL.

I sadly have to agree, not many games do grapplers right, and most that do are either 3d or none traditional fighters.
Theirs only handful who can wreck stuff and win tournament consecutively
Tamaki:Aqua pazza
Chada: Yatagarasue
Vise: Cyberbots
Samurai Deeper Kyo: Boten Maru
Waldenstien: UNIEL (update version weakens them)
Potemkin: GGAC (updated weakens them)
Jax: MK2
Daimon: KoF series
then you have those who ares till high tier but not top tier
Condor: Breakers Revenge
Sajin Komamaru: Bleach DS series
Gato: Phantom breaker Extra
Kanae ?: Perfeckt world ?
Jun ?: advnaced variable geo 2
Cathy Wild: Asuka 120% Final burn/Limited

Uh. Yes. It’s their mobility. Or, rather, the traditional lack thereof. In a genre where spacing is so important, having subpar options for controlling your own spacing is often a huge deal.
On the other hand, developers that aren’t Capcom usually get at least one really good grappler in their games, so it’s mostly a Capcom-thing. KOF in particular has system mechanics that tend to favor grapplers (comboable command grabs, the jump system, rolls that can be used as an approach while grapplers are good at punishing rolls), hence their grapplers tend to be really solid.
Also, even Capcom does it right occasionally. UMvC3 Haggar won EVO, after all =>>>>
Jax is not a grappler.
He has a fireball and a ground pound.
Having a command grab doesn’t automatically make a character a grappler.
Capcom style grapplers were strong in some SF2 games because, while they had a hard time getting in, if they did it was almost game over, especially with Hawk in ST, who takes this design idea to the limit.
After ST Capcom kept nerfing throws by reducing their range, damage and speed, and added throw invulnerability to prejumps. Grapplers meanwhile didn’t get buffs to compensate, so the archetype declined as it lost the massive advantage at close range but kept their slow mobility.
Gief was strong in a few games afterwards, but not so much for his grappling.

AN? he had command grab and his regular grab did more damage, as well as air grab, a grappler is person who game revolve around landing their command grab. just because they had other tools does’nt change that. Waldestine, Vise, Potemkin, Tamaki, Tager, KoF Daimon/Bear usually have other said tools, Are they not grappler too?
Hmm… Maybe Zangief, because everyone uses him in a cheap way.
