I main Guile, mainly because I’ve always liked him and his moves. That, and I find his super move to be ten times easier to execute than any qc or hc motions. I can never seem to pull those off consistently on a stick. I practice day and night and it feels like I’ve reached a plateau because I can never seem to pull them off under pressure.
I tried Ryu at first, but, even with a stick, I could never get the hang of Shoryuken reversal timing. I hung up the game for a few years.
When I got ahold of a copy of ST, I tried a bunch of characters besides Ryu. I found that I could hit reversals with charge characters every time, and Claw’s been my main ever since. Every now and then, when I’m feeling froggy, I’ll try playing Dictator, but I always seem to come back to Claw; he just fits my playstyle perfectly, and he’s still a beast in HDR.
Played on GGPO with a keyboard: eliminates all non charge characters, Guile and Vega due to their supers.
Didn’t want to break my keyboard with pointless mashing: eliminates Honda, Chun, Blanka, Dee Jay
Didn’t own a gaming keyboard so I couldn’t press more than 3 buttons at once: eliminates Rog
So by process of elimination I became a Bison player. And now I own a stick so all that shit doesn’t even matter but I’ve just really grown to love him so yeah.
I remember way back in the day(world warrior at the pizza shop) when all you could do to beat Zangief was to jump back and kick
lol
Computer had SPD on macro. I was a kid , so i just picked Ken or Ryu…idk why though.
BARLOG & FEI
I love boxing though. I am a boxer. Unfortunately i’m not built like Barlog. Doing dash punches in real boxing takes away so much energy, i’m not gonna say i fight like him.
…Makes me realize just how much in shape young Iron Mike Tyson really way, to be able to go so hard all round.
I dont have the money for a stick yet, so dragon punches are too difficult for me. Chickenwing is insanely hard to pull off too.
But being a fan of Bruce Lee, i picked him up a couple months ago.
I recently figured i’ll pick up all the boss characters. Vega is fun as hell, and i’m still adjusting to Bison not having a reversal wakeup.
i still remember the first time i played street fighter, i picked vega cause i thought the mask was cool(i was 12). I didnt really play it again till WW came out on the SNES. Although i was bummed i couldnt use vega, i tried using blanka cause…well, he was a beast(literally). i quickly realized that the dragon punch was the best move in the game(in WW at least) and started using ryu. He’s been my main ever since.
i am starting to get sick of Ryu’s bad matchups, but it took so long for me to get decent with him that i dont want to take the time to learn another character. i never had alot of experience against real players untill HDR and xbox live. its like i was playing a different game all these years. ive become obsessed again like i was when WW came out on the snes and after months of getting my ass handed to me, i finally can hold my own.
I like Akuma because of his “max power” attitude towards fighting. While everyone else emphasized the more controlled, refined style of their fighting art, Akuma was like, “F*** that! Why should I limit the power of my fighting style when I can maximize my potential with the Satsui No Hadou?” and took the Shoto style to the next level.
That didn’t mean that the guy was a cold-hearted serial killer though. Sure he tries to kill whoever he deems worthy enough to challenge, but refuses to fight people who aren’t worthy (Weaker) and IIRC, he stopped fighting with Gen after realizing the guy was ill, showing that he also has a sense of honor as well. Just because of that alone, I would pick Akuma over either of the other Shotos anyday in any SF game, broken or not.
Gameplay wise, I’ll have to admit that I am a bit of a sucker for how good of a punch he packs with his attacks, especially in Super Turbo HD. I grew up with the Shoto characters since Ryu was the guy I picked when I first started playing SFII (Generic guy in a karate outfit. Can’t go wrong!) Ryu was a fireball guy with unique punches, Ken was the Shoryuken guy with the unique kicks. And then there’s Akuma, who does pretty much everything Ryu and Ken does, except better, and then some (Regular, flame, AND air fireballs, a multi-hit dragon punch, a multi-hit tatsumaki that can juggle INTO a dragon punch, and a badass invincible Super! WTF!)
A few years back, I was teaching ST to my girlfriend, and I was looking for a character that I could play that wasn’t super dominating, and who I didn’t use, so that the matches would be a little more even while she was learning. I picked up Dee Jay. I’d always hated Dee Jay for no particular reason, and never, ever played him.
It took less than a week before I was better with Dee Jay than my mainstay characters. He’s just stuck ever since.
I play Ken. I started with Ryu, but he always seemed a bit sluggish to me as i prefer quicker characters, so i switched to Ken. The i started really learning the game and learned to love the Kneebash. I <3 Kneebash.
When I first started HD Remix, I thought I would main Guile because I’d played Guile in every single game he’s been in (even MvC2). But then I noticed that people were complimenting me on my Blanka play. Then I discovered it’s fun as hell trying to figure out how to win with someone who should really die so easily. Thus began my journey with Blanka.
When I was new to SF2 I used Guile a lot, but not in the way I use him these days. Guile to this day is probably my main in HDR, however I also like using Boxer, Honda, Deejay, Ken, Ryu, Sim, and Claw… that’s right I said it, CLAW!!!
there’s something so satisfying watching people get frustrated with the most carnal and denigrating move in the game.
that was my attraction to blanka. now It’s just that I know him inside and out and how to play every matchup in the game. He’s got fun mind games. Good tournament character to be honest. you only need 4 rounds worth of tricks. 4 mistakes + 4 solid rushes = KO.
But seriously, I started off using Balrog in Hyper Fighting. I liked how he fought and how fast he could beat you down. I also learned how to charge buffer with him, so thank you Balrog. <3
Eventually, I moved onto Super Street Fighter 2 The New Challengers on my SNES emulator. I loved how Balrog finally got a reversal. So here I am, fighting the new four, when I come across T.Hawk. Of course his AI destroyed me, but I was fascinated on how he fought, and because his throw looked super badass. So I used him and couldn’t use him worth shit. After all I was used to charge characters, not command characters, let alone a grabber. But I was determined damnit!
It was a short time later that I found out T.Hawk was considered one of the worst characters in ST. This only fueled my determination to prove his worth, even against his worst match-up. So I spent day after day looking for a way to download SSF2T, when I finally came across MAME. I took T.Hawk online and started using him more more, learning how to tick with him, how to approach, and more more and proving how awesome he is.
HDR finally gets released, and I steered away from Balrog, and more into T.Hawk. Its NOW people are realizing how sick he is, and what he’s capable of.
This is what I’m talking about. Nice story dude. I kind of wanted to do something similar with Cammy, but to be honest I don’t have much patience. I know Ken, I’ve picked up Zangief and that’s about it. I want to crack on with a third and final character but I’m stuck in the rut of do I spend time learning a new character, or do I invest that time on someone I’m already good with?
I can’t really believe that T Hawk rates worse than Zangief in ST. For my money, T Hawk is a more useful version of Gief because he is more “mobile”. For example, vs Guile should be a little easier because he is more able to get in after a projectile with his dive. I’ve tried a bit of Hawk too, but I’m forever whiffing his throws. Not sure if I’m doing it too early, if I’m not in range or what.
