Yeah, Christos Gage, baby. I just read three random issues of StormWatch PHD and I was really impressed, man. The first TPB of that is already out, so I think I’m gonna get that one of these days. Maybe we can find it at 50% off at WonderCon.

His other stuff I checked out, like his Deadshot and Union Jack minis, were very good, too. I even watched an episode of Law & Order: SVU that he wrote, and it was exceptional.

defcon’s av reminds me of Matt Wagner, too. He’s gonna write some new comics in addition to his current Grendel mini. I think he’s doing something for Vertigo and he’s doing Zorro for another publisher. It’s so tough to keep up with all these good guys. Hopefully Dark Horse will start reprinting more of the old Grendel stuff.

dark horse is committed to releasing the grendel library, or so they say. batman/grendel tpb and hc is coming up (collecting both series) followed by devil’s quest hc and a hc of devil child (odd choice).

Zorro is looking really good…will definitely get the tpb. his vertigo series seems a bit strange though.

All right, so a couple weeks ago Mike Carey was at the Isotope so I had a chance to shake his hand and chat and stuff. At that point, I had only read a few of his comics. I had My Faith In Frankie (an under-the-radar Vertigo miniseries) and the Hellblazer: All His Engines OGN. Both of those are really great, especially the All His Engines book, which may be the quintessential John Constantine book. But other than those two books, I didn’t really have too much of his stuff. (Although I have been reading X-Men, which is great.)

But I just read the first volume of Crossing Midnight and it basically blew me away. After this one volume, I think this could be the best Vertigo series of its generation. I borrowed the first volume of Lucifer from a buddy, so I’ll get started on that at some point. I also got his Regifters book from DC’s Minx line, which is in the queue.

So yeah. Mike Carey is my new comics writin’ hero. He was a very polite gentleman, which just goes to show how great a writer he is if you’ve ever encountered any of the twisted stuff he’s written in Hellblazer.

oh shit son! i was about to put carey up for at least honorable mention because i loved what he did on Lucifer. haven’t finished Ennis’s run on Hellblazer yet, so i haven’t gotten around to Carey’s HB stuff yet, but i’m sure it’ll be game tight as well.
