^lol those are awesome! I second that motion.
wait why are you concerned with what your friends think?
not to mention you’re probably asking the wrong forum about arcade sticks then given that most of us are fighting game ENTHUSIASTS who take much pleasure in playing these games and play with other people who enjoy playing these games.
my advice: get a SE brawl stick, then go work on your self esteem?
or just practice pad. there are plenty of people who are very good with pad.
Have you ever used an arcade stick before?
Do you go to arcades?
Are you serious about fighting games?
If you answer yes to all then invest in something that will last.
If your friends will laugh at you for having a $150 stick then I have to assume your answers are no for the three questions.
If you’re only playing MvC3 then play with the pad. FYI Some pro players use pads as well. The stick will not magically make you better, which you seem to get that impression.
guess I’m not getting a stick then. i just wish i could beat someone online. thats the only reason i wanted a stick…
Lol. A stick won’t let you do that, only practice. Think of it like MMA or boxing. Some folks online have been training for years on fighting games. Just because you buy some professional gloves doesn’t mean that you will be knocking everybody out. You got to put in the time like anybody else.
An arcade stick is just like a music instrument. To be more precise it is a game playing instrument. The only difference is that you never execute the same song. Depending on the pieces song that your opponent plays, you have to start playing a song that wins over that.
Just because you buy the most expensive grand piano, doesn’t mean you’ll be playing
instead the notes that we learn go something like:
:uf::hp:, :d::mk:, :qcf: :hp:
Going from gamepad to arcade stick is like going from one instrument to another, nothing else. Many of us here just prefer arcade stick because that is what we learned on.
i actually picked up stick just so i can be used to the arcade control scheme when i play at arcades, i didnt want to develop two different muscle memories (one for pad then one for stick) and i just wanted to develop one consolidated muscle memory at a higher level.
not to be a dick, but my first post was probably just cause i was irked that your comment about being a joke for spending $150+ on an arcade stick lead to me thinking that there were some insinuations about people on SRK, many who of which have spent MUCH MORE than 150 on a stick or even several sticks.
street fighter, marvel, etc is competitive IN NATURE for the fact that it literally tells you to “beat the other opponent” as the primary, if not only goal and nothing else in mind, ergo people who are hungrier and have done the things necessary to ensure victory will probably win a particular match.
I think you may be just new to “competitive games” in general. Whether it be DotA, Counter-Strike, Starcraft, or any fighting game, it basically comes down to execution and strategy, which comes only from practice and knowledge. If you want to start winning online (and im sure you can already probably beat a few people once in a while with just mashing) you just need to be better than your competition. You just need to ask yourself “how much drive do i want? how much do i really want to win?” not everyone can be pro and not everyone wants to be pro, but what is your goal? do you want to win more than once every 20 games? thats a 5% success rate, then you need to be better than 5% of the people online and you need to know more and be able to execute better than 5% of the other people online. If your goal is to win more like 20% then the work you need to put in is directly proportional. You just need to be more honest with yourself as to what your goals are and what you need to do to get there.
What rtdzign said is right, the medium of inputs does not constitute how good you are at executing those inputs, and thats not beyond your capabilities. i absolutely 100% guarantee it. If wolfkrone can win evo online on a pad, you can beat a couple scrubs online in mvc3.
Look at one handed terror for example

hes a pretty good player who happens to have one hand. All the other stuff like sticks, pads, etc are not as important as the larger picture of practice and learning.
Given that, you dont want your peripherals breaking on you while you practice. you should also know that most of us have suggested something other than those ones you were asking about not because we’re trying to blindly promote a brand or anything, its cause we have knowledge about the quality of construct of certain product. The madcatz TE lasts longer and can withstand more abuse than the paewang/joytron, madcatz SE, hori ex2 and i personally know from experience the round 1 SE and hori EX2 both have issues with buttons that tend to crap out but i have NEVER had any problems with the my custom which has sanwa parts similar to the TE. It doesnt have to be sanwa specifically, any high grade arcade part (seimitsu, iL, etc) will do, but you get my point.
Last but not least, I still stand by this… if you’re friends judge you by the hobbies/interests that you take i would take a few minutes to contemplate the quality of those friends.
