This guy knows.

If you wanna play MK, play UMK3. That’s the bottom line. Head on over to: www.classicmk.com, or www.mortalkombatempires.com if you wanna discuss MK.

Id say Ryu’s cr.MK is the best MK…

In hindsight, after playing a lot of fighting games in my life, I believe that the combo system in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was ahead of it’s time.

When I look at this, I see this no different as the way Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is played today. Like Marvel, it’s all multiple ground hits followed by juggles. Even though the world wasn’t ready for a gameplay like this back in 1995, if people knew how to play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 like this back in 1995 then it probably would have been a revolutionary fighting game which would have opened a lot of eyes. These look like difficult combos to do so I think only a few players could do it not everyone.

But this is all hindsight. Who knows.

The Tiger Handheld Mortal Kombat was the best.

You all just don’t know.

^Speak for yourself, I had the MK trilogy one, too good

Funny thing is that a lot of the guys you see hating on the dial a combo system are the same ones with tekken avy or mains in their sig. 10hit anyone???

UMK3 is still a great game, hence why it’s the only MK that’s really being played at tournaments. The combo system is great, but that’s not UMK3’s best attribute. The mind games are intense in UMK3, you also need really quick reaction time to beast at UMK3.

More people need to play it, when it’s held at tournaments. Hopefully there will be a good turnout at NECX. Just wish I could’ve made it.

From the two 3D games that were listed… Deception. Not one to play competitively but it was fun.

Though the best one is still Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3.

MK was kinda revolutionary gameplay wise, it was the first game to have juggles, apparently it was first for dial a combos but i thought KI was first, knocking people through multiple stages and some other shit that does not come to mind. However, the series really needs to be developed by someone else cough Capcom* cough*. I feel although Midway created the Mk characters they are undeserving of such well designed characters. Also why do a lot of people think UMK3 was good only by accident?

yeah 10hit strings are soo essential to the game.

I think its cause the developers didnt mean for it to have some depth to it. it was meant to be a casual game, the same way ssbm is.

Back in those days, I don’t think anyone was thinking in terms of ā€œcasualā€ or ā€œhardcoreā€. People just made cool games, as best they could.
The fighting genre were also new and unexplored, who know what would work and what wouldn’t work yet.
UMK3 tried some cool new stuff, and imo they struck gold.

More games should have stuff like homing missiles, freeze effect, teleport punches, projectiles that bounce you towards the caster, "get-over-here"s, transforming into any other character at will, invisibility… I think that what makes so many characters in UMK3 a joy to play. I can’t think of any other fighter that uses this many crazy, unorthodox ideas. Maybe GG, but I still think it’s a step behind in crazy mechanics(or gimmicks if you will)…

UMK3/MK4
MKA
MK4 (Arcade)

…rest don’t matta (imo)

In addition the introduction of the ā€œrunā€ button in MK3/UMK3 was a great idea because it sped the game up. I know King of Fighters also had the ability to run before anyone but how they use that run button in UMK3 today online is bad ass. It just makes the game in constant kill mode kinda like Marvel. You can’t turtle or hide ā€œIt’s just kill or be killedā€.

In defense of Street Fighter which I love, Street Fighter characters are unique to each other. Playing Blanka and Ryu require two different extreme styles. More variety. And even more variety in the third strike roster. While in MK the whole roster plays relatively the same. Saying that however, I think Sub Zero and Scorpion are two of the coolest characters in fighting game history. Kabal is sick also.

Christmas Edition Abel heart lmao!

This is surprising. I did not know SRK had some love for UMK3. Now just step up and play it at the tournaments in which it is held.

Name everything a top game has, and UMK3 more than likely has it as well. Well not literally, but in the sense of high level games and high level aspects.

I am still shocked at how detailed the UMK3 SRK wiki is.

Samurai Shodown series developed quite alot of unique special moves over the years too, well you can take SS4 character movesets alone, then Guilty Gear series also come to mind (Faust’s moveset, or Testament’s, or Venom’s, all use unique ideas)

This is now my crusade for SRK. Thank you for the inspiration.

Man… Im LATE to this one arent I??

Heres a basic rundown of what you want to purchase/Emulate (MAME is a godsend if youre not already familiar with it) in what I feel is the best order of MK’s, OLD SCHOOL ONLY:

1: MK2… still the best and unarguably the most violent with the most creative Fatalities… Mileena’s Suck-in/Spit out the Bones and Kung Lao’s Hat Split marked the last time we would see great Fatalities.

2: MK3/UMK3 I feel that 3 played better, Ultimate added in lots of scrubtastic moves.

3: MK1… Still holds up incredibly well if not a bit slow…

4: MK4 Feels too cheap and rushed…

And New School:

5: MK: Deadly Alliance

6: MK: Deception

7: MK Vs. DC… The game felt like a rehash that catered to n00bs, but still worth checking out if youre curious.

But all of this is just me…

UMK3 was sweet, I also played a lot of the MK trilogy for N64 lol
