Which fighting game you think has the best animation?

VF5

Look at dat animation.

But doing Xrd that way would remove from the game feeling like the older games in terms of animation.

Killer instinct. C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER! Or SFxT. Hopefully SF5 goes a different route…not sprite animations but not the 4 series models either…something in between or new altogether.

I feel the need to mention The Rumble Fish.

And that would necessarily be a bad thing? When I first saw the trailer for Xrd I got so hype for the huge beautiful sprites in it, then I saw the camera pan around them, and was like… wut? I understand why they did it, but I think it would have been interesting to see a super smooth Guilty Gear. Anyone know if Marvel uses a keyframe style of animation for their 3D models? I figure if they could do Morrigans transformationy stuff in 3D with smooth motion Guilty Gear could do it as well.

Skullgirls and Garou.

I dunno if everyone would consider it a fighting game but i think the Naruto games they have been putting out are incredibly impressive in terms of animation:

SF3, Skullgirls, VSav, Garou, KOF series. There’s some other obscure games with great animation but that’s like the go to stuff. The Art of Fighting 3 stuff is pretty cool too and was pretty much the prototype for KOF12/13 animation (3d models turned into 2d sprites).

Glad someone mentioned Martial Masters. That game has some nice sprites.

As a former animation major I would definitely say imo

-classic squash and stretch creative use of all visual frames
X-Men COTA/Marvel Super Heroes (frames in these games are so advanced not even funny, got nerfed later in VS. titles)
Vampire series
Skullgirls

-animated fluidity with full range start to finish clothing , attacks etc animations
SF3S
Samurai Spirits 3/4

This is an interesting read with visual examples…

Also Skullgirls is in the Guinness book of world records for most frames of animation per character.

“Most frames of animation per character
The downloadable fighter “Skullgirls” pounds out a staggering 11,515 frames for its eight playable characters. That’s an average 1,439 frames per fighter.”

Yeah that Darkstalkers and the 12 rules of animation is a very good read. As for Skullgirls It shows. The characters move so fluidly. Almost like watching a Chuck Jones cartoon.

yea, too bad that the game plays like ass

What makes you say that? Do you just not like Skullgirls? Or do you think it’s a bad game? If it’s the latter why?

the game is bad in so many ways
i think that the biggest problem is that mikez actually thinks that mvc2 was a good game, so when he decided to make a “revision” leaving outside the bullshit it was left with a dry game with really dumb shit on it, most of it by his design choices because he took away the bullshit that made mvc2 fun
he promised a fast game full of resets but we have a boring slow as molasses game full of tods and long combos
add the character designs that turn away anyone who could be curious about the game, is no wonder why barely anyone plays it

@Daidalus. I agree and disagree on some parts. You’re right MVC2 wasn’t a good game from a critical perspective, but dammit was it fun. Skullgirls is noticeably slower and it’s very easy to hit confirm and perform long combos. It’s so easy and balanced that yeah, it just isn’t as fun as MVC2 with all the shenanigans.

I disagree with the character design point but I can see your point. Me personaly I see no issue with T&A and a lil pandering in a fighter. Most of us who play fighters are male right? SF does it with Cammy and R.Mika. KOF with Mai Shuranui. Soul Cal with Ivy, Darkstalkers with Morrigan and Felicia. And don’t get me started on Blazblue or Arcana Hearts. So why does SG get hate for its fan service?

With that said SG isn’t my cup of tea. I like the characters (Ms.Fortune ftw ) and the aesthetics, the long combos ruin it for me. MVC2 was cool because you had to do resets. Couldn’t style on your foe off a single random hit confirm for 10-15 seconds. But I don’t think it’s a bad game.

Recent:

KOF XIII
SkullGirls

Past gen:

3rd Strike
Garou

Old School:

Killer Instinct
Primal Rage

I still think SFII animates really well. Yea it’s not super fluid or anything but all the moves feel like they have a ton of impact to them, reactions are done really well, and moves have weight. Really well done animation there.

There’s more to animation then just smoothness and number of frames.

Seriously? I think Darkstalkers, Samurai Showdown, KOF94 might have something to say about that. I mean those two are practically in stop motion. I’m curious as to why you feel they had the best animation for their time?

Darkstalker of course. Cause that is the first animation on video game that make my jaw drop
