I’d settle for a good anime based off a game. Yeah lets start small people.
Persona 4 the Animation is really solid.
I’m disappointed that no one has mentioned Assassin’s Fist and plugged the upcoming World Warrior movie.
I dare say that Joey Ansah’s vision of how a Street fighter movie should be shot is the cutting edge of the genre.
Dangerous J look at it like this, comics get movie adaptions to bring the pages to life, to show off the action and to give characters voice etc. Games on the other hand supersede movies because not only is the story out there moving about, your also taking part in it, its a higher tier of entertainment like getting closer to that holodeck deal.
Look at GTA V or DA:I with massive budgets, great voice acting, stories are brilliant and on/above standard hollywood fare. A movie of a good game these days could infact be redundant. Movies these days go up the chain to video game adaptions and not the other way around.
Next generation Oculus Rift… the entertainment game could shift again. :o

But in all seriousness, video game movies are hampered by two things for the most part. One, games are an interactive medium, while movies are passive, making it difficult to translate pivotal player-driven moments in the game to the screen. Sometimes there’s not as big of an impact when you’re not doing it yourself. And secondly, the story choices in video games tend to constrained by the game mechanics themselves. For example when the game mechanics require your “moral choices” to be absolute saintly paragon or baby-eating asshole, the story will have to present itself in that binary fashion. This leads to movies trying to capture that game experience and falling flat because it makes even less sense to have those story constrictions in a medium where those restrictions aren’t a necessary evil. Or otherwise it tries to do its own thing and ends up resembling little of the game in question. Add to these the fact that movie writers still don’t really understand games, and the fact that games have many hours to tell their stories when movies have up to two hours max, and it just ends of being a mess.
None of that: producers/directors are unwilling to take the characters/story seriously like the comic books movie are being taken now. As soon as that happens, you’ll have a good video game movie.
Like I said, taking established characters and/or stories from video games is begging for disappointment and failure. The way to make a good video game movie is to capitalize on the game’s mood and environment.
You can have a very good Fallout movie, because the game is all about the dystopian wasteland, not a huge, lore-filled backstory. A Metal Gear Solid movie would be absolutely dreadful, since you can’t properly capture the suspense and intensity of you, yourself, sneaking around.
It’s not necessarily the directors/studios not taking video game stories seriously. Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children was made by Square Enix and was absolutely stupid, story-wise.
Final Fantasy Spirits Within probably killed any chance of a quality gaming movie being made.

This is probably the biggest reason. Some games do have a good plot, but as with most games in between cutscenes that progresses the story, you are just running around and doing what you need to do which is like 90% of the experience. So games with good plots can’t always be adapted because they’d have to add in “filler” between actual story moments. And if the game is very single character focused no one wants to see them just doing nothing by themselves, and we also wouldn’t want shitty movie only characters to try to make stuff happen.
But as stated before TV shows or animes could be the best place to make TV type entertainment based off games. Also gotta consider how games sometimes start off with you just being throw into the mix, and not all the time movies can pull that start off in the action and give 2 minutes of plot explanation and let it ride out

What the fuck are you on? Look at all the shit going on with Marvel. It has shit to do with what the story is so long as you treat it seriously. The creative elements of these IPs are their strength. The moment people feel a need to dick around with them is when things just fall apart. You don’t need to make a movie feel like you’re playing a game, you just need to trust that all the additional things are represented properly.
This is why Silent Hill is still the best video game movie and why the MK movie (while corny now) was so solid: they just trusted the setting and characters and used them properly. The problem with AC wasn’t that it was a movie, its that it picked up after FF7 ended. This made it so that you would’ve needed to play the game in order to get anything out of it. Great soundtrack though.
