When do you think we will see the next big thing in fighting games?

In terms of “revolutionary,” we might never see the next big thing in fighting games. The 3D games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, and VF4 have set standards in quality that are a bit difficult to surpass.
But the new systems have the potential to churn out some great fighters.
Personally, I would love a new game as good and fun as Tekken 5 all around, but with gore and fatalities. Since gore is the only thing keeping Mortal Kombat afloat now, a better game with better usage of this stuff might help sink it. Or force it to become better. Meh.
Technically, the “dethroning” of MK as the go-to bloody fighting game series would be a big thing happening in fighting games. It wouldn’t change the way they’re played, but it would be big.

Otherwise, how do you think a system that grades the player would fly? One that actually means something though, unlike the one in SF3. What if they used this grading scale for unlockables? If the unlockables were well worth that pressure, then that would be incentive to play the game and get good at it.

Just wait until Doug Winger makes his own version of Gals’ Fighter. You’ll see PLENTY of big things then…

just did a google image search for doung winger…

lol!

The success of 2D fighters of the future will revolve around giving casual fighters a reason to CONTINUE playing and not just play in the first place, however this very reason must NOT come in the way of a hardcore’s players wet dream.

Axeman has the right idea, we need to give newbie fighters a reason to keep playing. Positive reinforcement basically. Reward them for their efforts and attempts at becoming better players. Once a newbie player becomes a master at a game like SF, he or she are hooked.

As for giving the mechanics of the 2D fighter an overhaul, I agree but to what extent are you willing to go while still maintaining the very thing that makes it so special (the fact that it is 2D)? Bigger and more interactive, even destructible stages or stages that incorporate “ring outs” or death traps. Leveled stages perhaps.

More realistic and detailed sprites: For example, if we are gonna have interactive stages, we might as well have realistic head motions. For example, if your opponent is standing on a car and you are standing on the ground, your character’s head should be looking slighting upwards to face your opponent, this can be done with sprites. Perhaps even adding something like “Auto-aiming” with fireballs, not homing fireballs. In the car example I just gave, if you are standing on a car and your opponent is on the ground, when you shoot your fireball it should be aimed towards your opponent visually, IE your character would shoot the fireball at an angle so that it would hit the opponent instead of fly over his head, the command to do this move is the same but the character adjusts in accordance to your opponent. This is but an idea that would add realism to gameplay without sacrificing anything at all, it would certainly assist casual players.

Lets just pray that doesn’t happen.

For me it was just WTF?

I didn’t even try to check out dude’s work. When I saw “hermaphrodite furries” in a description, I went back.

I can see it now: full-screen pokes

^ lol dude, no… just, no.

Oh please. That’s weak as hell, so how about in non-team sports hmmm? How about in professional weight lifting? Certainly athletes push themselves to be the best with better body building methods don’t they? It also applies to team sports because people will always bring their best game and are not expect to play down to make it “interesting”. It’s competition, you learn from losing, and if you can’t take losses then you have no place there. Again I’ll say fighters need to be easy to learn, hard to master (referring to control scheme), something that will bring in new players on the creative end would definantly help aswell (and if the control scheme is easy they’ll be able to master it and be more competitive sooner).

My idea for a good fighter? Fuck SF4, bring out SF2 beta or something else in between SF2 and 3. Resolve some of the ryu/sagat/akuma/ken rivalries and bring some closure to that. Keep a mainly old school feel, but bring in one or two non-broken new elements into it. Have the (whole) cast drawn cvs2 style. No parries, which would really move drastically away from old school no matter what anyone says. Truth is it doesn’t even have to be SF, it just needs to appeal to mainstream gamers while keeping what’s always made it special: the competitive field it allows players to fight on. (no button masher games like DOA is/was considered to be (although if it is or not especially now is open to debate)

Eh, I don’t think there will be a “next big thing” when it comes to fighting games. If there’s anything that get’s casual gamers into new games, it’s popularity.

I remember I first went to an arcade as a teen, and saw a group of about 14 people standing around a DDR machine, chatting it up and playing. The game looked interesting, did some research, and started playing. People like to join communities that are big, and active. A lot of people are using SSBM as an idea for the next big thing. SSBM is a fun game, but I didn’t really take any interest in it until i saw all the tournaments that were held for it. They have tournies placed at peoples homes all the time. People started to catch wind of it, and it got popular. Hell it was even on MTV’s True Life. Granted, they have a lot more things that are convient (ONE system, instead of 2-3, no complaints about ‘arcade perfect’ since there is no arcade version) but still.

FGC doesn’t need something amazingly new, because stuff after that gets retarded and broken. I play Maximum Tune, and there’s always a thread asking what should be in the next one. Usually the basic idea is the same game, with extra things added (more cars, bodykits, etc.) It seems that we want is the same games with some small extras added. Since it probably won’t happen, just be happy with what we have. Right now, our main linup of games is:

3s
MvC2
CvS2
GG
VF (if that)

Pretty much every aspect of Fighting Games that people want are in those games. If you want one of those games to get bigger, take it upon yourself to do so. Say you play some random newb at the arcade. Next day you go there, he comes back. Take it upon yourself to help him at the game. Introduce him to people. Tell him to buy the game for console. Start setting up kickbacks with arcade people and playing at home. He’ll/She’ll be so happy that they’re getting better and having fun, they’ll go and tell friends about how much fun they have playing. That might get friends into it, and that helps the community grow.

Eh, it’s 4am, and I’m really tired, if I rambled on stupidly, I apologize.
